This is a story about my trip to the Blue Mountains. I did this as a day trip from Sydney. I had a great time although hiking all over the mountains was exhausting. The train ride to Katoomba, the closest train station, took 2 hours and 10 minutes. The train ticket cast 10 dollars round trip and then I bought a hop-on-hop off bus pass. Normally I disdain those kind of tourist things, but I only had a day to see as much as I could, so I think it was worth it. The Blue Mountains National Park reminded me of Starved Rock Park a little bit. If Starved Rock was an entire mountain range. There was gorgeous scenery and difficult muddy trails. One trail had been closed because a tree fell over it. There is ... read more

Here is the impression I have of Australians: friendly, kind, generous, helpful people. Of course this impression is based purely on the 20-something backpacker crowd I met traveling in Europe. Far be in from me to deny the possibility that there are rude and unfriendly Australians around, but I never met them. Before I got here my preconceived notion of Australians was very warm and fuzzy. So let’s go with warm and fuzzy shall we? My impression of the city is of a bustling metropolis. It is amazing to me that this city was founded less than 200 hundred years ago. Since most cities in developed westernized nations are very similar in a lot of ways it is a challenge to explore them until you uncover the subtle differences that make a city unique. Sydney has ... read more

This is a story of a girl on her way to Australia to live and work for the better part of a year. She had booked her flight four months in advance (and got a really good deal, too!) She had a place to stay and someone to meet her at the airport in Sydney. She had made her way to LA to catch her flight and was waiting for the shuttle bus to pick her up when she decided to check her email one last time. There was an email waiting for her: Your flight to Sydney has been cancelled. If this is an error please call expedia. !?!?!? What! How can the flight be cancelled at the last minute? Now what? I am going switch to first person to say that I was pretty ... read more

The zoo has screeching, squawking, crying, screaming, rampaging animals everywhere you look. I really think they were disturbing the poor residents in their cages. Despite the zoo being overrun with people everywhere I quite enjoyed it. Since the main reason I came to San Diego was to see the Pandas. Definitely worth the trip. The zoo itself has over 100 acres and it seems that every inch is packed with interesting animals and plants to see. Here in San Diego I am enjoying the beautiful spring like weather. Apparently the average daily temperature here is 70 degrees year round. The negative side of the beautiful weather is the homeless population here is quite prevalent. I must have been hit up for money about 30 times on my first day and I didn't arrive until afternoon. I ... read more

Hi Everyone! I commencing part II of my world tour here in Texas. Austin is the capital of Texas, the self proclaimed Live Music Capital of the World, home of the largest urban bat colony in the world and the residence of my little brother. All of these things draw visitors from around the world. Especially Illinois. And did I mention it is about 100 degrees and sunny here everyday? Delightful. I took the greyhound bus from Bloomington, IL to get here. It took 36 hours and four bus changes to get here. I left Illinois on the 25th of May and got to Texas on the 26th. But since it only cost 87 dollars I feel it was worth the inconvenience. I have more time than money now since I am not working 40 hours ... read more

What though the radiance which was once so bright Be now for ever taken from my sight, Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind -Ode to Intimations of Immortality, William Wordsworth Everything is easy: learning to read, arithmetic, riding a bike, driving a car, baking a soufflé, climbing a mountain, brain surgery, leaving your country for 6 months. Its easy. No problem, anyone can do it. Of course, anything is easy once you’ve done it. It’s the before that is difficult. Its the beginning that leaves you frozen, awash in fear of unknown, unpredictable possibilities, questioning why you would even want to put yourself through the trouble. Is the risk really worth the possible benefits? ... read more

Hi Everyone! During these last few days of my trip I have tried to take the utmost advantage of being in big city. I visited the Hong Kong Art Museum, History Museum, Science Museum, Zoological and Botanical Gardens, Lo Pin Monastery with the Giant seated Buddha, I took a cable car ride up the mountain, and lets not forget Disney World. I found Disney world a disappointment after Ocean Park, but what can compare with Pandas? I am glad that I got to see what it was like. I found the Hong Kong History museum quite informative. Britain and other European countries began trading with China and other East Asian countries hundreds of years ago. Then around the nineteenth century Britain began importing Opium to Hong Kong. And like most addictive mind altering substances it was ... read more

Hi Everyone! I have finally left India behind and am in my last stop on my world tour! Hong Kong! I have actually been to Hong Kong before, about 4 years ago when my best friend studied abroad here for a semester. I saved for three months on ramen noodles to afford a 900 dollar ticket, and because I had just started full time at Wal-mart I didn't have any vacation time so I could only afford to take 6 days, 2 of which were used up on the flights. That left me only 4 days here. My friend picked me up from the airport and took me around shopping and sight seeing. It gives me a strange sense a deja vu now, because I recognize places that I have been but I don't remember how ... read more

Hi Everyone, Delhi seems to me to epitomize all that is wonderful and horrible about India. I ended my trip here, but most tourists start here because Delhi is a major international destination. I heard more than one horror story from fellow tourists that I met in Agra and Varanasi about the tourist scams that go on. One couple told me that instead of taking them to their hotel their taxi driver dropped them off at a 'tourist information office' which was a front for a travel agent selling private tours of Agra, Jaipur and Delhi. They tried to tell leave, but the agent insisted that all the hotels in Delhi were booked and that they could only get a place to stay if they bought his tour package. They were there for two hours before ... read more

Hi Everyone, I spent the last week in Jaipur and Udaipur in Rajasthan, India. Jaipur is home to the Amber fort and the Pink City. The Pink City gets its name from its pink city walls, but don't let the locals hear you call it that or they will laugh at you. Apparently to them it is the 'Old City.' While I was in Jaipur a met a group of girls who showed me around their college and took me to their English Institute where they take extra English classes. I got to meet the students and help them with their English. They even taught me a little Hindi. I also got a chance to talk to local Indian women, which was a nice change of pace. Apparently women don't have as much opportunity to learn ... read more
