Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Tao March 18th 2011

Where to start! We spent just over a week on Koh Tao (an island off Thailand's east coast) with the intention of doing an open water PADI course, but ending up doing the advanced course as well. We dived/dove with the Davy Jones' Locker Diving School, which we highly recommend to anyone thinking about doing it. I think the best thing about the diving apart from the actual scuba bit was meeting a great group of people that we basically spent the entire time with. There were 7 of us on the course all from the UK apart from one Canadian and two instructors: Luke and Rory (who came around with us a lot too). At the end of the open water course Laura won a free beer off the instructors for getting 100% in her ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Lanta March 8th 2011

Ko Lanta was like taking a holiday from travelling! It was very relaxing, the scenery was beautiful and the people were lovely. We stayed in a beach bungalow place called Strandbaren, which translates as Beach Bar in Swedish and was owned by, you guessed it, a Swedish guy. The island had a huge Swedish population, they even had a school with 180 children, so we're guessing Ko Lanta is Thailand's little Sweden. Our beach bungalow was great, thatched walls and roof. The bathroom was all decorated with shells and stones from the beach which was 10 meters from our front door. After spending the first two days relaxing on this beach we hired a bike and went further afield in search of beautiful beaches. The first bike outing wasn't too successful as we got completely lost! ... read more

We spent our last days in Malaysia on the island of Penang. We spent time in both Georgetown and by the beach. In Georgetown we saw all the sights, mostly from the British Colonial era, but the Chinese temples were outstanding. The food here was fantastic. We ate most nights at this hawker stall area, and had the best noodles we've ever tasted for 2.70 Ringets (about 50p). We also went to this dim sum place where these little old ladies push carts of dim sum around and you point at what you want. We spent a couple of days at the beach. A 40 min bus ride took us from Georgetown to Batu Ferringhi. We didn't do much here except sunbathe and eat! Every morning around 5am a Mosque woke us with a very loud ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur » China Town February 20th 2011

Both of us here! Malaysia is fantastic! We flew through the night and arriving felt like going on holiday. It was so warm when we stepped off the plane at 5am, all the warm clothes got put to the bottom of the bags immediately. We took the very efficient public transport to the hostel and checked in at 7am, then slept till midday! The hostel was very clean, there was a lady there all day just constantly cleaning. This all meant that Malaysia felt worlds away from India. After our lie in we decided to stay local and had a stroll around Chinatown to the Central Market which is (in Malaysian terms) quite old. We had our feet eaten (sucked) by fish, and sought refuge from the torrential rain. We had dinner at a place called ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Varanasi February 12th 2011

Laura here! So the night train from Khajuraho was nicer than expected. We were in 2AC which means 2 bunks and, obviously, air conditioning. No need for AC because it isn't that hot, but the sealed windows means its warmer than the other carriages. We got given pillows, linen and blankets, and we had a little section to ourselves, so a fairly decent nights sleep. Nicer than some of the hostels we've stayed in! Varanasi was also nicer than we expected because people had been telling us how horrible it is in terms of being harassed. We were also concerned about getting sick because it seems quite a lot of people get sick in Varanasi. However, we really liked it. There was a great atmosphere, especially around the old city part. It was very easy to ... read more

Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra February 11th 2011

In Delhi now but were going to split the blogs up so this one will be "Agra and Khajuraho" written by me (Jamie), and I'll get Laura to write on Varanasi and our return to Delhi, which to keep you in suspense has the worlds best apple pie, a hair raising tale of running through the small streets of Varanasi past lots of guards with machine guns and a rickshaw driver that almost killed half the population of Varanasi to get us to the station. Went to Agra, where we saw the Taj Mahal among other things. It was alot like seeing a celebrity because it's such an iconic image. We were worried that it might have been a disappointment because its talked up so much, but it was actually very impressive; worth getting up for ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bharatpur January 30th 2011

Jamie here, Thought we'd try fit in all these different places into one as they are smaller and to keep it interesting! Spent a good deal of time on buses to and from all these places which has been eventful! On one bus between Pushkar and a bus station in a city called Ajmer I ended up having a big argument with the bus conductor who was trying to grossly overcharge us for having bags, which was in hindsight, quite funny. Pushkar seems to be a hippy paradise (especially for Australians and Kiwis); most of the shops seemed like they were from Glastonbury, and in fact a lot of the clothes sold at Glastonbury were made there! Meat, eggs and Alcohol were banned in the town because it had a special temple and lake for the ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaipur January 22nd 2011

Hello, Laura here. We have had a fantastic time in Jaipur. Our train journey from Delhi was much better than expected. After hearing several horror stories about the Indian Railways we were concerned about our first journey. However, the train was on time, comfortable, relatively clean and even had a choice of 'indian style' or 'western style' toilet! Jamie and I began playing cards, a couple of Indian men next to us were watching and seemed to understand the gist of it so I offered to deal them into the next round. Our ability to communicate was very limited though. At the next station a lady who worked in a call centre for vodafone boarded the train and sat close to us. She became a translator and we spent the rest of the 6 hours chatting ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » Delhi January 18th 2011

hi jamie here, The flights were great; we were very happy with our jet airway flight as their were lots of films to watch although my monitor was broken so read and slept most of the journey. We were also given about a hundred meals. Most of the day was quite disorientating as we were so tired and Delhi moves at a breakneck speed; we'll also have to get used to all the hawkers and the traffic! Didn't have a longtime walking around before dinner and an early nights sleep, but we were able to walk down the Raj Path where the military were practicing for their Republic Day Parade, got some good pictures of Camel Cavalry silhouetting the top of the steps to the government buildings and the Presidential palace. As we speak Laura is ... read more

After a whistle stop tour of Mold, Sheffield, Lancaster and Ashbourne we are packed and ready to go. Our bags are surprisingly light, with some space leftover, which is making us think whether we should pack some more! However, we do want some space leftover for things we might pick up along the way. We fly tomorrow at 3.50pm from Manchester to Delhi and then 8.50pm we board our flight to Delhi to arrive there at 10.40am local time. India is 5.5 hours ahead of the UK. This will be our travelling blog for the next 4 months or so. If you subscribe, you will get an email notification when we update this blog, or you can keep checking back, its up to you! See you in 4 months!... read more
