Friday 11th November Fairly early start, with the intention of driving to Wanaka or possibly further via Queenstown. It was a cloudy day and we retraced our drive back to Mossburn and then cut across to Five Rivers. Drove along the valley and then once past Kingston the road ran along the side of a lake. All very pretty with the gorse and may blossom and wild lupins just coming into flower and snow peppering the tops of the mountains. Stopped in Queenstown and had a wander around the esplanade, (the sun came out for a while!) looked in the shops and decided to go to Arrowtown, an old Gold Rush town on the banks of the River Arrow. About half hour drive and we parked the Van and went to the museum which exhibits the ... read more

Wednesday 9th November Awoke to another grey day which meant that any stunning scenery there may have been was hidden by the low cloud! Anyway, the countryside started off with rolling hills a bit like Scotland and then the road became a bit more hilly, like Cornwall and then flattened out across the agricultural plain like Spain and then became a bit more wild as we got nearer Te Anau. Occasionally we caught sight of snow on the mountain tops but the sun didn’t really start to break the clouds up until late afternoon. We reached Te Anau about 1.30am ( 330 kms & 5hrs drive) and booked into the campsite in town (Kiwi) before going to book our trip to Milford Sound (Trips and Tramps) tomorrow, and the Glow worm Caves (Real Journeys) for today. ... read more

Sunday 6th Nov Up at 5.00am and a walk to the station opposite to catch the train to the Airport. Checked in and then thought we would see if we could sell our Sydney city train tickets that still had 4 days of city travel on them - Got 20$ from a Swiss couple who were visiting Sydney (It all helps!!) Also, when we checked in they advised that the plane had no in-flight entertainment so we had an allowance of 60$ to spend on books, magazines, food etc in the airport! Busy morning!! Flight was on time (08.35am), uneventful flight and fantastic views of the snow on the mountains as we came in to land in Christchurch. Phoned the campervan people who told us to get taxi to them - Adventure Campervans, 73 Treffers Road, ... read more

Journey and flights to Sydney uneventful, connection went fine – Brisbane a very easy airport to navigate and 40 mins was ample time! Had a good view of Sydney Bridge and Opera House as we came into land.......in cloud...... Bought 7 day tickets ( $59 each) which will take us to and from the airport, and also allow us unlimited travel on buses, trains and ferries for our duration! Our hotel/hostel (Bounce) is an excellent hostel. Good size room, free breakfast (you have to make it yourself though!) very clean and modern and fabulous views from the roof terrace. The best thing is that it is next to Central Station so very easy to get out and about! Next Day - Luck was always going to run out weatherwise – and it ran out today! Awoke ... read more

Our hotel (Best Western Mango House!) is lovely! Described as a small studio, it is plenty big enough with a balcony and walls like louvre windows so that you can open it all up to the air and light if you wish! We walked into Airlee Beach (20 minute walk!) and had a wander around what must be a backpackers paradise! It’s a really pretty place with a lovely lagoon and grass front area and lined with shops, bars and restaurants behind. Had a drink at the sailing club and then walked back to hotel where Pam (the owner!) was going to give me a lesson in snorkelling! The lesson went well – still not 100% confident in deep water but will persevere and keep practising!! The next day we walked to the jetty, via the ... read more

DARWIN Flight was about ½ hour late leaving Singapore for the 4hr 10 minute flight to Darwin and after a near touchdown, he then took off again and circled around before landing at about 05.00am. There was an electric storm and the pilot said that the winds were a bit erratic which is why he went round again! Taxi to Hostel (Banyan View Lodge) which apart from being like a school building is fine! The room is large, clean, has a fridge, en suite, nice shower, tv, air con, fan, lovely beds – double and a single......but the walls are just breeze blocks painted and its lit by one long fluorescent tube! After a shower, we walked up into the town – quite a sleepy town but loads of different birds flying around! Chris phoned his ... read more

Twenty two hours on a train!! Longest journey on a train, ever....so far!! Fairly uneventful – we were sat with a large Thai family and passed the afternoon looking at the scenery etc. We were sleeping in the upstairs bunks, so after the beds were made up by the ‘bed man’ at about 19.00, everyone settled down to sleep by about 20.00 pm!! Early night t!! Early morning also as everyone was up at about 06.00am!! Bright sunny day again and apart from having to get off the train at Pedang Besar with our luggage, go through customs and then get back on the same train again, just relaxed, read books, sorted photos, watched scenery and ate food!! The train arrived about an hour or so late, (or it could have been an hours time change!) ... read more

The next day we were fully rested and up at 06.00 to take a look at the river and the large Buddha. As it was such a lovely morning we also walked up to the Golden Triangle viewpoint where you can see the three countries – Thailand, Laos and Burma. This was where a lot of illegal trading went on, of drugs, animals, children and guns, up to about 20 years ago when the Government of Thailand clamped down on it. Had a wander around a really old 13th C Temple (under renovation!) and then meandered back down the steps to find something for breakfast. We all then went as a group, went to the opium museum, which has a fine collection of clay pipes and a lot of information on the Hill Tribes and the ... read more

After a fairly good nights sleep on the train, awoke to another bright sunny day and was then told that the train was running about 4 hours late so we would get to the Laos border about midday instead of 8.00am! (cutting down our sightseeing hours!!) The train arrived at Nongkhai and after having our passport stamped, boarded tuk tuks to take us the 2km across the ‘Friendship’ bridge and the river to the Laos border. Had to then complete forms for our Visa’s and arrival cards etc, so took about 45 mins or so to get through and board the mini buses that were taking us the 30 minute drive to our hotel (Mali Namphu) in Vientiane. Vientiane, situated in the Mekong valley, became the capital of Lan Xang (million elephants) in 1545. Ransacked by ... read more

Today we were off to Thailand! A couple of hours, across the flooded rice paddies of Cambodia, brought us to the border! After being fingerprinted (again!) we walked into no-mans land, where there are a few large casinos, and then onto the Thai border. Unfortunately there were long queues and it took about an hour to filter our way through customs so we didn’t leave until 12.00ish. The mini bus driver drove like a maniac.....(or so we thought! After a few days here we are actually used to it now!!) and we reached the hotel ( Erawan House) about 5.00pm. A quick walk with Martin around the back streets and local market stalls, , food and drink and that was us done for the day! The next day we decided to take the boat down the ... read more
