Wow we covered a lot of ground... err... water today. That of course means... we're in Quetico! It's just about as I expected it would be, minus a few things here and there?the first being the actual distance we travel and the second being the actual length of time it takes to travel said distance. Those minutiae aside, it's not half bad. The worst thing, if anything, was the 5:30 wake-up call and the fact that I was carrying an 80 pound food pack on my back for three quarters of a mile at 8:30 AM... which really happens to be about the time I'd wake up each morning. Quite a change of pace for me. Before we even set foot in a canoe, I could tell this was not going to be your average vacation... ... read more

You know, I brought the last four Harry Potter books thinking that out of the minimum 28 hours I'd be on the road I could read them... but this place is too fascinating that it's probably one of the only things that could distract me from getting to the seventh book (really, I've been averaging a book a day in hopes of reading them all through the seventh). We spent most of all day driving on a scenic road right next to Lake Superior. It was great just driving in the woods with the lake right, literally on the right, to us. Kind of got us all excited too for what lay ahead of us as we left cities and real highways and drove north. Today is our last day of civilization, however different this ... read more

We're headed up to Canada! We're spending a few days in a park there called Quetico National Park... but we're not there yet. Right now, we're in Duluth, Minnesota, and man... this town actually surprises me. It's strange how I'm not surprised by a gigantic park in the middle of New York City's skyscrapers, but how I am surprised when, while in the quaint port town of Duluth, my family and I stumble across the Leif Erikson park—a gorgeous spread of rose gardens, brick walkways, and fountains along the shores of Lake Superior. It should really be the opposite, no? For some reason (and I know I should not really do this) I had a perceived notion of what Duluth would be like when I got there. Before leaving for this trip, amidst all the ... read more

Advisory: please take care in reading trail maps and trail markers if and when you ever visit Monhegan Island. Otherwise you just might end up lost, and on an island where the year round population is only 75, there aren't a lot of places to stop and ask for directions to get back to your ferry on time. On the other hand, if you don't mind the risk (or if you have no choice), it may just be a blessing in disguise. When Keith and I deboarded our boat and grabbed a quick coffee at the cafe on the dock, we decided to head to up to the lighthouse and then take a trail to Pebble Beach on the northern end of the island; however, somehow, we ended up on a trail that was surely not ... read more

It's amazing how easy it is to become acclimated to Maine's lifestyle, even though it's such a change from my usual lifestyle. I haven't at all wanted to log onto the net, I'm not especially bummed that my cell phone is constantly in roam, I don't mind the fact that the roads here are few and far between, and mostly, I don't mind that I've only seen one Starbucks in the entire state thus far. And yes, I know what you're saying: I've only been here a few days, and I couldn't live this way forever, and really I'm not addicted to Starbucks (and make it a point to express the fact that it's overkill and "over-convenience" how many there are in the world/in a mile radius where I come from, etc. etc., etc.). But there ... read more

You know, I think a lot of people look over Maine. I myself am guilty of it. It's just not a state I, and I assume a vast majority of travelers, tend to think of when planning a vacation or trip. That's a shame. I haven't been here 24 hours yet, and already I can see why Maine displays the phrase "Vacationland" on their license plates. I can't think of a state nickname that is truer. And perhaps my sentiments are such because the first actual excursion I've been on since entering the state yesterday boasts the "million dollar view." Who can beat that? Not many people. But what people can beat at Popham State Beach is the ocean. At low tide, it's possible to walk across what would be the ocean floor to Fox ... read more

And I love it (oh, are you surprised?). Cape Cod as a local · Monday, May 21 We rolled into Cape Cod with relative ease, only having Providence rush hour traffic to deal with. We then checked into our hotel in West Yarmouth and proceeded to take our much needed showers. Once cleansed we set off in search of food and found this place called Molly's Restaurant & Pub a few miles north of us. It was really cool. We walked in and there weren't many people th... read more

Oh, to have to leave the Big Apple. Since yesterday was so tiring and the showers at the hostel so cold, we decided to sleep until just about check out time (11:00 AM) and spend the rest of our time in NYC in Central Park and shower immediately upon our arrival in Cape Cod. So we checked out of the hostel, loaded our stuff up in the car that was conveniently parked out in front of the hostel (we got lucky and found a prime spot for free the whole time we were there 25 feet from the hostel entrance), and hopped on a downtown subway for the last time. We got off at 72nd after a short ride, and tried to find a food place that looked appetizing enough to eat at--we wanted breakfast ... read more

I've said this before, but I really do dig New York. And boy did I see a lot of it today. We woke up to some better and slightly warmer weather just in time to take an incredibly cold shower at our hostel. I actually ended up using the bathroom sink for the majority of my cleansing time in an effort to streamline and minimize the amount of cold water I got on me--yes, it was that cold. I felt like a seasoned traveler though; not only was I staying in a hostel, but I was showering in a hostel sink. I love it. After Keith and I finished getting ready for the day, we walked down Lenox to the subway and went all the way downtown to Battery Park in order to see what ... read more

Well, I'm back in New York, so why shouldn't I be back in Times Square. That seems to be the central point to all my NYC trips (well, both of them). Can't complain though, it really is a cool place. I can't imagine really that I'm back in New York having really just come back from a trip here a month ago. I did say though that I'd be back soon... guess I'm a girl of my word. We didn't do much tonight but find a place to eat in Times Square and kind of check out the sites, including Radio City and a stop inside Virgin. It was still a bit rainy and cold, and since we have a few days in the city I can't say I was disappointed to head back to ... read more
