Dubrovnik It never ceased to amaze me that I can travel "alone" & yet never really be alone!! mostly I see this as a blessing... though, there were times that I truly cherished my 'alone time'--- Dubrovnik gave me that after a loooong time of travelling with others.... well at least for one day it did.. haha!! Ola, Ange and I split up in Barcelona... Ola headed for the only corner of Spain she hadn't seen yet - the north-west part; Ange flew to Belgrade to meet up with Effie & Dragan who were travelling in Montenegro from Australia; and I flew to Dubrovnik to mee Ange & co 2 days later... If taking a cheap flight from Spain, its common to fly Vueling Airlines - despite their many strikes & known delays :p I found ... read more

ESPAÑA...OLÉ OLÉ HOLA!! Madrid - Following my disappointment in NYC & Canada, I couldn’t wait to get to Spain/ Europe! This was yet again the end of an era – The America’s and the beginning of a new one – Europa!!!! I was super excited to see my friend Ange and explore the Mediterranean with her & my sister, Ola (who was by now the expert in the region :p). flew into Madrid from NYC - Ola split up over there and took different flights that pretty much land at same time (supposedly!). I took Air Lingus (Irish line) which was fantastic and included a stop at Dublin airport, which made really wana go to Ireland - even more than before! Met a gorgeous and somewhat stereotypical older Irish woman on the flight which made time ... read more

CANADA!! saddly i'm writing this almost 6mths after the trip... so it's somewhat lacking :/ part 1 - Vancouer I had always imagined Canada to be like Australia... in many ways, but generally in day-to-day culture... & i guess in hindsight... it is! After my culture shock in the US, I also expected to like Canada more... or feel more at home there... I didnt :/ Vancouver is a nice city... it's clean, new, modern, wealthy... in fact, after spending 4mths in Asia, all I could see in Vancouver was immense wealth! which is why I was absolutely shocked, stunned & disgusted by the number of homeless people & beggars that we saw in the streets... I found this really disheartening & sickening... to me Canada represents the 'new world' & the 1st world (if there ... read more

part 1 - Los Angeles Flight to LA from Manila... leave Manila Fri 28 May 10pm - arrive La Fri 28 May 8pm... I TIME TRAVELLED!!!!! ;p on my flight to LA i felt as tho a major phase of my travels had come to an end - the Asia period. After spending 4mths in South East Asia, I was on my way to the heart of Western society! All I could think was "what will I eat there?" hehe... The plan was to meet my family on Sat 29 May (whenever that is), but due to a flight delay they didnt arrive until Sunday. At that stage I had no idea what day or time it was, I was really living in a dream zone - the time travel had really messed with my worldly ... read more

Philippines 9 April - 28 May 2010 part 1: living la vida locale!! Isulan, Sultan Kudarat How can I ever summarize this part of my trip? I've thought about it so much... it's almost impossible! haha... since leaving Melbourne I knew that I had a lot of free time in April/May & my preference was to live somewhere with a small provincial community to experience a different lifestyle. The Philippines seemed a perfect choice, since I already knew the place on a basic level, already spoke a bit of the language and I have so many friends there that I would love to see & get to know better. I spoke to my friend Joyvie there who lives in the South of the Mindanao region (commonly associated with terrorism & violence)...hehe...the other appealing factor of going ... read more

Singapore - 7-9 April 2010 After years of stopping in Singapore as a transit passenger to other countries, I finally decided to explore this small & unique country a bit more =) it also meant more to be here after meeting so many Singaporians in Melbourne & hearing different views about the place... I guess for a superficial glance at the place, it's true what people say: you dont need much longer than 2 or 3 days here... but like all places, there's lies far greater things beneath the surface & these take a significantly longer time to discover & understand. I'm glad I visited Singapore after having spent 3wks in Malaysia & after having had a conversation with a Singaporian in Melbourne about the history of its separation from greater Malaysia.... I could really see ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh April 18th 2010

part 1 - Sihanoukville Ola & I decided it would be cool to travel to Cambodia from Phu Quoc island by boat & bus as a change from flying. We booked our tickets in Phu Quoc from a Russian guy who was offering a speed boat to Ha Tien, bus ride across the boarder into Sihanoukville and Cambodian visa processing - all for US$50!!! It seemed too good to be true!! & when we arrived at the jetty the next morning, we feared that we had been badly jubed. At the jetty we were informed that the speed boat had broken down & we would take a slow boat for twice the length of time. This meant that we might miss our bus to Cambodia & we had to wait to get to the other side ... read more

Vietnam 9 - 28 March 2010 Part I - Hanoi Ola & I arrived in Hanoi after spending a very warm nite in KL =) to our dismay, the pilot of our Air Asia flight announced that it was 16degs in Hanoi! sick of being cold from Japan we frowned but knew we only had to stick it out a bit longer b4 we're in warm climates again! We arrived at the airport like important business 'men' with a driver waiting for us holding our names up on cardboard! hehe... lifelong dream #112 ACHIEVED! hehe... Our lovely host Eva (ozzie expat living/working in Hanoi for 2yrs) was kind nuf to arrange this driver for us & to welcome us into her lovely '7star' apartment just outside the city centre =) this was already looking tres bien! ... read more

Japan Feb/March 2010 after spending a night of 'free accom' at KL international airport (where I wrote my last entry, played with the luggage trollies & ate KFC for a wonderful 4am snack!) i finally caught my flight to Narita, Tokyo. My arrival in Japan was the most eventful so far. I landed at the same time as Ola, Maz & Hart (tho they were on a different flight from Australia). Going thru customs/immigration check point, I handed over my entry card where under the "address in Japan" section I had simply written "Onsen" coz that's all I could remember about the place we were going to for snowboarding. This didnt seem to please the Immigration officer & before I knew it I was being ushered into a side office with an official who was thoroughly ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Wilayah Persekutuan » Kuala Lumpur » China Town February 25th 2010

As the sun rises over Melbourne on the 6th of Feb 2010, I board my 1st flight (of many) on my long awaited world journey. As I walked towards the aircraft, I thought of all the people I've ever travelled with and how they're not here with me now - not physically anyway! I'm disappointed that my ideal of travelling with only hand luggage has failed so miserably...pain already throbbing in my shoulders... apparently these back packs aren't meant to hurt :/ hmmm... Spent 36hrs getting to KL from Melb!! gotta be a record!! upside is I got to spend a day in Perth with Bo & his family, which was super cool =) downside was spending 8hrs in Singapore airport, sleeping with one eye open (as metalica would say) until I finally reached KL - ... read more
