Geo: -20.7367, 116.846On our way to a free camp we called in to see Karratha. My goodness is that place thriving. There is so much building and construction of roads going on. We have noticed all the houses up this way don't have any gutters. Too much water. Karratha is now a stones throw from Dampier as they have built a dual lane freeway to connect the 2 towns.Karratha has a huge port and a large mining community.Dampier is such a pretty little town and is the home to the Red Dog statue. It has a huge port and out in the bay is an island which looks like paradise from the distance. Apparently a man built a castle there and lived on the island until he died and is now buried there. You can take ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Broome May 26th 2013

Geo: -17.9551, 122.241We left Derby early as we had 200+kms to drive and it was very pleasant. Broome is a stunning place to visit. The site we booked at the Roebuck Bay Caravan Park was a seafront view overlooking the bay. Temperatures were a comfy 28 to 30 and not much breeze during the night. We had the car serviced there and it cost about $150+ more than home so everything costs so much more in peak season and not being locals. Anyway enough of that. We had the best seats for the steps to the moon but we were not great at taking pictures. We also visited the old china town which is now modernised and used by many varied businesses. We had a quick look in the pearl shops....aaargh $$$$$$$.We also visited the museum ... read more

Geo: -17.3048, 123.632Well we missed Windjana Gorge as it rained and they closed the roads for a couple of days and we didn't want to miss our flight later in the week. We stayed in Fitzroy Crossing for another couple of days and then went onto Derby 2 days early.Derby is a great country town. We saw the Prison Tree which is said to be about 1500 years old. The town has created a wet lands from the waste water recycling and we decided we weren't going to have any duck for tea as there were thousands there. The sunsets were great. We checked out Myall's Bore and cattle trough which is 120 meters long. Italy may have the leaning tower of Pisa but Australia has the leaning Boab of Derby ha ha who needs to travel ... read more

Geo: -18.1942, 125.569Gee the days are all becoming one and its hard for us on holidays to remember what day it is and that's not because we are or are in with the grey nomads!! Saturday saw us arrive at Fitzroy Crossing where we will spend 2 nights. The caravan park is enormous and great with large shady sites and lawn everywhere. We had to stock up on groceries and they only have 1 IGA store here so the monopoly with prices is pretty steep. Couldn't get over seeing kangaroo tails in the freezer section.Sunday saw us up and heading to Geikie Gorge for a 2.5km walk. It was stinking hot, had to walk through sand (tough going) and the view at the end was miserable. Don't recommend this walk to anyone. The Fitzroy River is huge although ... read more

Geo: -18.2248, 127.666Well we should be getting used to the darn sun up at 5.30 but I can tell you its not funny. Guess the only benefit is hitting the highway early. We had such a long way to go today 100kms which found us in Halls Creek. The town is about the size of Birdwood with a local IGA and some other small shops. We had to stock up on groceries and wow that was expensive. We both felt like curry so we bought a jar of pataks curry sauce $7.50. Hmmm we will shop again later in Fitzroy Crossing, hopefully that is not so dear. Fuel here is cheaper than most places at $1.745 p/l diesel. Well we got back to the van after spending up big and had lunch before going out to see ... read more

Geo: -17.5341, 128.499Well we arrived at the Bungle Bungles Caravan Park on Monday 15th. The sky was overcast and looked a bit grim. After booking in we enquired about a flight over the ranges thinking maybe Thursday would be a good day. The girl was a very good sales woman and convinced us to go that afternoon. Well I can tell you, I (Lyn) was shitting my pants as I had a yukky flight over the Flinders in this type of weather. Anyway at 3pm we took off into the sky with a pilot who looked about 10 years old!!! David only has slight bruises to his leg from my fingernails digging in. The scenery is awesome and our pictures don't do it justice. The next day saw us leave the van and go tenting in the ... read more

Geo: -15.9164, 128.008We were up and on the road early after stocking up on groceries and fuel.. the car drinks more than us. We were heading for Home Valley Station down the Gibb River Road. The drive in was mainly bitumen until we passed ElQuestro then it became rougher with our first water crossing. The Cockburn Ranges are magnificent. We arrived at our bush camp and it was hot. No power so we slept with all windows open. It gets dark at 6pm and it gets LIGHT at 5.30am. We became like the grey nomads and went to bed not long after sun down and we were up with sun up. Spent the days croc watching which paid off as we saw two in the river in front of us. Darn mozzies are blood thirsty here.By ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Wyndham May 9th 2013

Geo: -15.4874, 128.123We decided to go for a day trip from Kununurra to Wyndham about 100km to check out the sights. Wyndham has a large port for loading cattle and ore. The view from Five Rivers Lookout is spectacular and I'm sure our pictures don't do it justice. Met some people who stayed at the top overnight.. what a view to wake up to.On our way back we detoured to see the boab prison tree. What a hard time those prisoners had. Check the pics for that. Went to look at some aboriginal rock art but unfortunately the roof rack decided to come loose so we had to unload the back of the car and spend an hour trying to tighten the darn bolts. Called into see Ivanhoe Crossing on the way back and that was ... read more

Geo: -15.7739, 128.739We left Katherine (disappointing) on Monday morning. The scenery along the highway was beautiful. We stopped at Victoria River Roadhouse for coffee and the area is kept lovely and the staff are very friendly. The caravan park looked ok. We reached the border of NT and WA and had to stop like every one else. There is no going past this check point. They look through all your cupboards, fridges (including car fridge) and take rego numbers etc. The only bonus for us was the time change which meant we gained 1 1/2 hours. This got us to Lake Argyle Caravan Park earlier than expected so we went sight seeing. Lake Argyle is massive and our pictures don't do it justice. Didn't take any tours here. Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Mataranka May 3rd 2013

Geo: -14.925, 133.072Wednesday saw us pass over the Tropic of Capricorn line heading for Tennant Creek. In the middle of nowhere, we passed a mango and grape farm selling ice cream!! At Tennant Creek we had a look around the Lake Mary Anne Dam (beautiful spot) and checked out the Bill Allen lookout where you could see for miles. We decided to stay a night in the caravan park. We called into Daly Waters on our way to Mataranka and found the pub a charming place to spend some time. The weather is getting hotter the further north we go. We were glad to get to Mataranka on Thursday spending a few hours with our noodles just floating in the Bitter Springs thermal pool. The crystal clear water is about 34 degrees.
