So much to do, to see, to eat, to drink. We've often through we would need two or three weeks for the part of the world. As you pointed out there is a lot going on. Really enjoyed this blog and history. Glad you were able to make the trip.
2 or 3 weeks in Sicily would be just about right You still wouldn't see everything -- it's a wonderful holiday destination just like the rest of Italy.
Google maps We have had really good experience with google maps in many places we have visited. It was mostly OK in Romania too. Now we came back from Sicily and it really got us lost a few times. Maybe more than a few times. There was a problem getting us out of the cities. We would drive round and round until we worked it out ourselves. Also it often started with something like "drive north west" -- but I had no compass and no girl guide past.

History of the house Dear Sir/Mam,
appreciated if you can provide the information of the house above:
when it was build,... build for whom..., now whom it belong to???
I strongly disagree with certain passage of your article. You wrote that "after the fall of communism, many people burnt old wooden windows, doors and furniture to keep warm in the winter". Sorry but this is absolute nonsense! I was born in the Czech republic, live here for the more than 28 years and I can assure you that Czech people never had to deal with such problems as how to keep warm in the winter. After all when you were in the Czech republic did you feel that we are some kind of poor third world country?!
Sorry, I gave the wrong impression That is what the owner's son told me. I may not have understood him. He actually said that a lot was being thrown out and burnt because people were getting rid of the symbols of the old regime and were finally able to buy new things. I am aware that the Czechs are educated, cultured people. Sorry if I caused offence.
We've traveled the world When you come back from visiting a few countries everyone always wants to know which country was your favorite. Impossible to answer as you have to compare apples to oranges. But, Greece will always be on the top of my list. Thanks for sharing. Your blog brings back some great memories.
Wonderful! Wonderful experience and wonderful blog. You know what? I'm now listening to Cat Stevens, thanks to your appreciation of his songs. The first time I've ever heard of him. And hope some day I will see the karsts, butterflies, rafts, etc, too.
NOW YOU HAVE TOUCHED THE SURFACE Interesting to read your perceptions of Beijing as part of a tour group...touching the surface. Staying next to Jinshan Park would have been great. Maybe next time you can get under the surface...you'll be glad you did!
thanx for updating hi, thanx 4 updating and sharing your travel experience on foothills of Himalayas. If you want to know about the Great Himalayas login at: www.tourscare.com
Thanks for the info ... I didn't mean any criticism. I love your country and the things I described were all part of the Indian experience and sometimes quite funny. It was interesting what you said about the heat this year.
Indian Coffee House The Indian Coffee House( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Coffee_House) is a restaurant chain , run by a co-operative society(Indian Coffee Workers Cooperative Society -http://www.indiancoffeehouse.com/).Their food is cheap and good usually. You had a tough time ordering there may be because they didn't understand what you said. Many of the keralites understand english but the problem is with the pronunciation. Our pronunciation is different from yours and so many a time we don't understand what you are saying.
In an Indian coffee house there will be a 'menu board'( they don't have menu cards) in which the names of all the food items they serve, with their prices are displayed.(http://www.flickr.com/photos/mayankaustensoofi/3597433082/). You can go through it and then order the dishes.
They usually don't serve any seafood.
If you want seafood in kerala goto some good restaurant in Fort kochi or Varkala
Fish restaurant If you want to eat fish while in alleppey don't ask for fish restaurants.Because
1)I don't think there is any restaurant exclusively for fish dishes. Also keralites(people of kerala) uses fish dishes only as a side dish for rice.
2)They usually call restaurants 'hotels'.So they may not understand what you meant.
3)There english pronunciation is different .So many a time they won't understand what you mean.
So if you want fish ask about any 'hotel' where you get fish dish.In the native language malayalam 'meen' (its pronounced like mean)means fish and Alleppy is famous for karimeen (pearl spot) dishes like 'Karimeen pollichathu'.Google it If you want to know more about it.
mussels in kerala There are not many spots in the villages in alleppey where you can find fish ,crab,or mussel dishes, even though you will see every one fishing and crabbing.Usually the mussels (or mussel dishes) are found in the village 'toddy shop'(local liquor shop) .They prepare it in a very hot and spicy manner and some times can cause the infamous 'deli belly'. That may be the reason why you were met with blank stares when you asked for it.
Kerala Glad to hear you liked alleppey.Even us ,keralites can't bear the heat this year.Punalur in kollam district(varkala is also in kollam district) recorded the highest temperature in india a few days ago(37 degree celsius). Thanks for coming to our beautiful state.
I always wanted to travel and left Australia when I was 18 to travel around Europe and Asia, working on the way in London and Amsterdam, before settling down in Tel Aviv. We didn't do much travelling for years, just short family holidays in Europe, and then in 2008 we started travelling again. This travel blog starts off with our first trip to Laos and Vietnam. After two years of covid restrictions, we were lucky enough to visit Santorini when there weren't so many tourists and later in the year we did a road trip around southern Italy. This year we celebrated a big anniversary with a short br... full info
