Well if last night was an excess in sleeping late today is the opposite, as we have to crawl out of bed around five am to go pick up Kay at the Capital Airport. Not only are morning flights a nuisance when you have to take them yourself, they're just as annoying when someone else does. It is a small price to pay for a full day's stay at the destination though, provided you arrive in a relatively relaxed state. Joanne and I jump into a taxi and speed off in the gloomy morning. Traffic is mercifully light. I manage to forget a glove in the backseat of the cab and before I can react it is long gone on new adventures. Kay's flight is on time and before too long we can meet up in ... read more

Trying to adjust myself to the normal hours people are out and about I get up real early around noon today. I arrange to meet Joanne at Houhai lake around 2.30. The lake area is downtown just north of the parks bordering on the Forbidden City and a popular area to hang out, with its countless restaurants, bars and coffee houses. The area is also surrounded by the famed Hutong areas of narrow alleyways and traditional houses, and most buildings are confined to one or two floors. Of course the price of all this is that it is rich with touts and other tourist trappings. It is yet another chilly and grey day but still good for walking along the lake. Right now the lake is covered with ice and there are a lot of people ... read more

In our original plan Joanne was supposed to be off work starting today, yet she has to fix some things at the office in the morning. This gives me a good excuse to sleep in late. After sleeping through the night next to the open balcony door and the a/c on full blow it is now getting quite comfy in the room, the temperature has dropped to around 22 C. I briefly get up in the morning to watch the faint glowing disk of sunlight desperately trying to break through the smog. It's no use. Beijing is in a self-imposed twilight zone. And much like in the rest of the city, the air in my apartment is a bit dry. Every time I go to the sink to splash some water into my face I receive ... read more

Peeking out the window all I see is grey clouds. As I wait for the plane to break through the final overcast and seeing the endless city blocks spreading out towards the horizon I am instead welcomed by a slight bump as the landing gear touches Chinese tarmac. Robbed of such a majestic arrival I rub my eyes and have another look outside. Hey, wait a second, I can actually see some buildings of the Capital Airport. Whether their inviting concrete naturale designs were intended as camouflage or not I have no idea, but the arrival could surely have benefitted from some more colour. I suddenly remember that Beijing is the grey city. I visited this place almost exactly one year ago, and the weather is very much the same. The sun is hidden behind a ... read more

After having finally spent the past weeks to sort out which flights to use it was now time to make my mind up on how to get to Kastrup airport. It may seem like the smallest of concerns yet this simple transfer has a tendency to become drawn out, due to the limited availability of connecting flights or other means of transportation. Basically it boiled down to two options; jumping on and off trains southward or going north to grab a connecting flight to Copenhagen from Stockholm (There is also a theoretical third option. My hometown Jönköping is blessed with an "international" airport, but opting for the flight to Copenhagen would mean arriving at 8 am for an onward flight in the late evening. Thanks, but no thanks). A connecting flight from Stockholm was my first ... read more

With New Year's holiday announced last week Kay was very happy to receive four days off work, and by some higher power it appeared that both Joanne and I would be able to take time off at the same time. Such an opportunity cannot be missed out on and we immediately got down to discussing where we should all meet up, Bangkok being the master plan. Where to continue was not really obvious but the main challenge as always, is finding a ticket to Bangkok from Scandinavia on short notice (short notice in this case is anything under three months time...). Needless to say it looked rather grim, Thailand being a premier getaway for Swedes tired of the dark and miserable November, so after a customary check verifying that all the flights were full I started ... read more

Transit time in Bangkok. Again, I have no particular agenda. It is nice to have lazy days like this, even though the time could have been spent more efficiently. At four thirty I head outside and am immediately floored by the heat, even at this hour. Yahoo reports 35 degress Celsius and I believe them. I take the MTR down to Siam and seek out my favourite photo shops to stock up on more camera accessories. I find some filters and cheap film, but those yummy telescopic lenses remain expensive so I steer clear of them. I buy some dinner with me and eat at my hotel room waiting for my midnight flight to come up. As I begin packing in the evening the neighbourhood suffers a total blackout, and not knowing how long it will ... read more

Oh what a boring morning. How I would have liked to remain in this country for at least another week, or two... Although I have been completely bombarded with impressions on this short stay I haven't even seen more than a few mere specks of the map. Hordes of provinces with spectacular dzongs are crying out for me to go visit them, and I have a feeling it may not be too long before I will return. First things first though, getting back to Bangkok turns out to become a real cliffhanger. I wake up late at 5.30 but I am still ready to go at the intended departure at 6 o'clock. But there is no sight of my crew, who were supposed to pick me up at the reception desk. I call Tshering, no reply. ... read more

Last day in Thimphu already. How dull! We have agreed to leave for the tsechu at 7 am to stand a chance against the expected crowd. This being the last day of the tsechu also means the most people will be present. I wonder how it can be possible to squeeze in even a single person more than yesterday and shudder at the thought of finding a good spot. We quickly check out from the hotel and I load all my surplus bananas Jasu's friends gave me into the trunk of the car and we speed off towards the dzhong. The weather is looking up and the sun is shining on a blue sky. Over at the dzhong I realize I am still carrying the heavy metallic room key, how can you forget an item like ... read more

Amazingly, for the first time on this trip I wake up on time and manage to go outside before Tshering arrives. We head directly to the festival grounds and notice that the traffic situation is a lot worse this morning and the crowd is gigantic. Security is stricter and I have to surrender my small umbrella before being allowed inside the dzong premises. The crowd is so overwhelming that it is impossible to find a good spot, so after some hapless wandering around we decide to give up for the moment and go sightseeing the city and return to try our luck again in the afternoon. Instead we drive to the nearby BBS Telecom tower hill for a grand view of Thimphu. Next stop is also nearby, the small compound that used to be the Thimphu ... read more
