So, Sunday has come, and the thought of giving up the room already feels like a small defeat. We still do have some time left in town before flying back to Bangkok, which we want to spend to meet some gastronomical goals. Kay is longing for steamed chicken feet and I simply need another cup of masala tea. And there you have the day's itinerary in one sentence; Chinatown and Little India, unsurprisingly, some of our absolute favourite places to be. Kay's desire to seek out new experiences brings us around the block in Chinatown searching for more cantonese restaurants until finally ending up at the Tak Po after all, and the chicken feet (and my char siew buns) are just as excellent today as well. After lunch we head over to Little India again, taking ... read more

Lo and behold; we wake up to a beautiful blue sky and a sun hanging high above our heads, and it is finally time for our overdue expedition to the zoo complex. The weather is fittingly warm and bright. Jason picks us up at our incense stinking room and as we step outside I need to do a small correction. It is not hot, it is steaming. Back inside. Apply sunblock. Maximum Power. There, back outside again and we head north by taxi. The Singapore Zoo is situated inland by the big reservoirs in the middle of the island. On our way we pass through numerous sleeper cities, some are gigantic apartment blocks and others are expensive looking villa suburbs. Jason takes us for lunch at a favourite place of his on the northern coast of ... read more

As we start our wanderings the sun almost manages to make an appearance through the broken clouds. We take the MRT to Little India where we have arranged to meet with Jason. This is also where we meet up with the rain. It doesn't seem to be that bad at first. We continue to wander the streets around the main Serangoon Road not really minding the little drips that keep falling. I immediately take a strong liking to this part of the city. The roads are crowded with taxis shuttling people around and the crowds in the pavement huddle under building archways where merchants display foodstuffs, magazines, incense and wonderfully smelling dried flowers. And each time we pass near an eatery the inviting smells of Indian cooking fills the air. I imagine Indian veterans will shrug ... read more

Predictably we were very tired this morning, being woken up by a loud humming noise and vibrations in the building. Apparently a big truck with a septic tank is drilling for leftovers in the sewage pipes just outside. Good morning to you too. Back to sleep. Around noon we are finally outside, walking the beat in Chinatown. The early blue sky has turned gray and we're just waiting for the inevitable shower. Singapore sitting so close to the equator gives it a pretty much same-same weather every day, hot and cloudy with frequent quick showers being what I remember from last time I visited. Walking around a bit at random we decide to have lunch at a Cantonese style restaurant which surprises us with some really good steamed chicken feet. The meat just peels off the ... read more

A little past one pm I step out of the Don Muang arrival hall into the fretting dry heat of the megalopolis we know and love as Bangkok. Wait a second? Bangkok? Yup, that's right. This is where I will meet up with Kay for the onward flight to Singapore later in the evening. In fact, I will have some four hours before it is time to head back to the airport again, and I intend to make good use of them. I have a taxi drop me off at Pradiphat Hotel where I have arranged a room. I quickly head up to drop off my bags and take a very much needed shower. Then it is time to hit downtown Siam to puchase any and all camera equipment I can find. The walk down Pradiphat ... read more

Europe » Sweden » Jönköping County » Jönköping April 11th 2006

Actually this trip came about as a result of the upcoming Songkran festival in Thailand. My good friend Kay in Bangkok had four days holiday announced and was dying to get out off town, thereby avoiding the water (and other substances) splashing that will take place at random in the streets. And with Easter coming up here in Europe during the same weekend it was a good enough opportunity to travel without spending too many days off work indeed. At first we looked at options going into the countryside and spending some lazy days at the coast. As you have already figured out the flights were kinda overbooked when we got around to planning. Pretty much every domestic airport in the south was filled to capacity. And if we found seats on a plane out off ... read more

My flight back to Europe departs at noon which means the morning is spent sleeping and generally preparing for the onward flight. We are escorted by a magnificent and prolonged sundown as we desperately try to outrun the darkness until it encapsulates us somewhere above the Mongolian mountains. When the trip is over you will go back to the places that you once belonged you will look for comfort there and when you do you'll find that it has gone from Endless Dream by Conjure One, lyrics by Poe.... read more

Waking up on my cozy mattress on the living room floor I have some vague memories of seeing Joanne rush off to work. Unsurprisingly that is exactly what transpired a good few hours earlier, so I think nothing of it and go back to sleep again. Kay and I aren't exactly known to be early birds but we are fit for fight around noon and grab a taxi outside to head over to the New Century Hotel tower in the northwest where Joanne's office is located. Kay will be on the plane back to Bangkok later this afternoon so we take the opportunity of one last meal together. There is a very nice Cantonese style restaurant in the hotel tower where the three of us meet up with Michael who also lives nearby. We feast on ... read more

Joanne's last day off work and we don't really have any big plans for the day so we take it easy in the morning and head out in the afternoon towards Taijichang daije and Wangfujing daije in the southwest not too far from Tianamen square. This area has some dedicated pedestrian streets only and is filled with chic shops and restaurants and foreign devils mucking about. Of course this means that I am targeted by hopeful touts roaming the area. Let's take Suzy the teacher as the typical example. A young English speaking woman wanting to know where you are from, what you are doing in China, how long you will stay, what you like best etc. It just so happens that she has a friend (or a friend of a friend, or whatever) that operates ... read more

After yesterday's long battle with the elements we slept like clubbed baby seals well into the sunlit hours of the day. Yes, that's right, behold the sun actually making an appearance all by itself on a clear blue sky. I have gotten so used to the constant twilight in Beijing that every breakthrough is a wonderful and refreshing little moment to embrace. Still, our agenda for the day does not consist of walking down winding trails in the vegetation, but reaching the nearby Japanese Ito Yokado supermarket to stock up on amenities, as Kay has promised to cook that lovely Tom Yam shrimp soup for us. It is also time to sample the various Swedish foodstuffs I brought along. So far the gingerbread was a storming success (they sure disappeared quickly), but the rice porridge I ... read more
