English bookstores
Nadia, the only English bookstore I've used is the Foreign Languages Bookstore and I don't think that they have used books. I sent myself boxes of books before I left the USA, so I haven't been checking around. Thanks for the advice on cleansers. Susan

Glad you're doctoring your cold
Susie - hope you are feeling better. Guess you had a meal on thanksgiving that in no way resembled the groaning table of turkey and pies! Loved all the details about living with a more sparing use of energy! It is estimated by scientist that if every nation reduced its comsumption by 2.5 percent we could stay ahead of the predicted decline of fossil fuel availability! Great to have our consciousness raised! Ironically, more development in a country seems to pave the way for more energy wasting, going from bikes to autos, etc. Glad to hear so much more detail about daily life and looking forward to the next installment! much love, nan

Glad you are better
Sorry to hear of your illness. Sounds like you got some good medicine! Thanks for all the information about life in China. The environmental activities are fascinating--something we can learn from.

Hi, I did a search on nanjing/english/bookstore on google, and your blog turned up - anyway, do you know where I can find cheap English books in Nanjing? I'm planning a trip there soon. For bathroom cleansers, I would ask for xi3 ce4 ji4 (wash bathroom detergent) or xi3 jie2 jing1, etc.; bai2 mao1 (white cat) is a common brand and works for almost everything - but I'm sure you've got the cleanser you want by now. Thanks in advance.

The gardens and the pond must have been wonderful to see - peaceful. And to think you got to fish in China!! L, G

Susie, you look fantastic! The pictures remind me of the trip Dad and I took. I remember seeing large statues of Buddha, too, and that they were so beautifully decorated - like some churches here and elsewhere. Doesn't guan Yin have large ears to hear all the people's stories? It is so good to get glimpses of your year in China! Love, G

Update from me and update on election
Thank you Susan for sending me your blog site. I will have to go back and read previous comments. Yes, the democrats have taken both the House and the Senate. The next morning Bush fired Rumsfelt. I think we have an opportunity now to develop a realistic plan to exit Irag. I will write more later. Love, Bev

Can't wait to meet you
Your pictures are fantastic! I can't wait to be in Nanjing. Very soon, we hope! Travel approval to adopt our little girl is on the way and we are hoping to leave next week. I'll give you a heads up somewhere along the way to let you know where we're staying and hopefully you'll be in touch. Do you know anything about the Mandarin Garden Hotel? That's where we want to stay, but don't know if it's close to anything. Is it possible to e-mail me with your e-mail address so I can ask you a couple more questions? My e-mail is ourblessedfamilyatgmaildotcom. Thank you! Mary

the "buddhas"
Susie, You do me a service with all your photos. I don't take any, but it is great to "borrow" the ones you take. Interesting, but I don't call any of those images from the temple buddhas. The first ones that look like warriors are guardians, spirit guardians I assume. The last one that is draped is Guan Yin. She always appears at the back of the buddhas in the main hall. You did not take any pictures of those. Guan Yin is usually shown with lots of small figures, usually children, also some animals. She is perched atop a large fish. I do not understand the iconography. All I can say is that when Buddhism came to China it was assimilated to the local religions.

The statues of old-time workers are great! And the square of flowers around them are so attractive! What a fun place to wander and relax. Yes, benches would be good. I wonder why there are none since the photos indicate an atmosphere conducive to them... Love, Gailey

I notice there are a lot more scooters and motorbikes in your photos than when Dad and I were in China. And actually there were fewer cars, too. Lots and lots of bikes. That was in 1983, I believe. And I don't recall the horn noises you write about. It sounds like it is changing!!
