You thought I was referring to wine. But I am referring to a visit to dear, longtime friends. Vintage Vegas generally refers to the older hotels and motels, or the type of fashion. Or, in my case, it refers to having a good time, the old-fashioned way. Our dear friend Debbie is headed to a golf tournament at La Quinta, so I will keep Ken company while she is gone. Her golf partner, Laura is also going, so her husband Jim, a former orthopedic surgeon will join our card games and dinners. As it turns out, the girls decided not to play in the Arizona golf tournament. So, we will enjoy everyone's company on this trip, after all! You are probably wondering what we will do for three days. One, we will play lots of cards. ... read more

I think the Final Four, aka March Madness is the best collegiate sport. It overshadows football, since at least 64 (sometimes 68) teams are selected and seeded into four regional playoffs. This year's NCAA Final Four is being held at the Superdome in New Orleans, on April 2 and 4. If you are a fan of college sports, and basketball, I would strongly suggest that you attend the Final Four. Some history from a previous email:All sports fans know when I say Final Four, I mean the NCAA Division 1 basketball tournament, often called either "The Big Dance" or "March Madness". The 68 best collegiate basketball teams play a single elimination tournament to determine the National Collegiate Champion in basketball. The tournamen... read more

South America » Chile » Atacama » Caldera March 8th 2022

From Fodor's: The Atacama Desert meets the Pacific Ocean in the Antofagasta region of Northern Chile. Rich in history, the desert-scape is peppered with abandoned nitrate mining towns and active copper mines around the Pan-American Highway. Dramatic cliffs drop to long beaches formed by the Pacific Ocean’s belting waves. Dry and arid winds have resulted in salt basins and lava flows throughout the Atacama Desert, lending it a moon-like landscape. The Valley of the Moon in Los Flamencos National Reserve is an exceptional spread of dunes, rugged mountains, and distinctive formations. At this remote location by the Pacific Ocean, dark skies offer some of the world’s most beautiful and clear star-viewing. I am reposting a funny story from our visit to the Atacama: After a few days on the coast of Chile, we rapidly tired of ... read more

Europe » France » Île-de-France March 6th 2022

Did you see this? There are more Rues Victor Hugo and Places Charles de Gaulle than you can shake a (French) stick at, but whilst over 60% of the country’s road names celebrate famous French men, only url=https://www.20minutes.fr/societe/2294867-20180622-egalite-entre-femmes-hommes-passe-aussi-feminisation-noms-rue6% nationwide honor the country’s women. In Paris, the figure is even more paltry at 2%. One place where the gender imbalance is being addressed, albeit slowly, is in Lyon, France’s third-largest city in the east of the country. Leave it to the French! We are no better here in the U.S. Nearly 5,000 streets are named Washington. I am certain it was George, not Martha, Grover, Gene, Kenny, or ?? Europe » Russia » Far East » Vladivostok March 5th 2022

This was my last email from Russia, back on May 26, 2014, probably sent from St. Petersburg. Some of you ask if I would go to Russia again, or even take the Trans Siberian Railway again. Probably not. Once was enough. This is my last email (with some updates and additions)from Russia. Many of you are thankful. Back when Siberia was the land of dispossessed white Russians, the little towns did not offer much. It did offer space and quiet. Some day you could hear your watch ticking at high noon on main street. Life was so dull, that anyone receiving a telegram was expected to circulate it as reading material for the entire town. Most of the cities and towns along the TSR are gray, drab, and depressing. From Inside Hook: Set to be held in person in 2022, the District celebrates the blooming of our cherry trees with a month-long festival commemorating the gift from the mayor of Tokyo to Washington, DC. in 1912. The festival includes formal events all around DC, including the Blossom Kite Festival, Petalpalooza, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, the Pink Tie Party and more. And, of course, lots of cherry tree peeping not only around the Tidal Basin but throughout the entire District. url=https://cherryblossomwatch.com/peak-bloom-forecast/#:~:text=T... read more

Most of you know that I love train travel. I have taken Amtrak's cross-country trains, as well as the Trans-Siberian Railway. I try to use public transportation whenever I can, particularly in Japan, Europe, and here in the U.S. Along the way, I have met some of the most interesting people. And what better way to really see the country you are visiting? Let's explore some lesser-known facts about train travel. You might be surprised to hear that the US has the largest railway network in the world, and by a large margin. With a total route length over 155,342 miles (250,000km), it's two-and-a-half times longer than the second-largest network in China. It's the US freight rail network that makes up 80% of the staggering length while passenger rail, run by Amtrak, is comprised of m ... read more

Everyone has read this alert: Airspace closures in response to the Ukraine conflict are causing widespread disruption of flights. Many countries have closed their airspace to airlines and aircraft from Russia, barring them from landing, taking off or flying through their territories. This includes all of Europe, the UK and Canada. It’s possible more countries will do the same in coming days.Russia has closed its airspace to airlines from multiple countries, preventing them from landing in or flying over its territory. The airspace above Ukraine is closed to al... read more

Europe » Ukraine » Kiev » Lukyanivska March 1st 2022

You know the story by now. I was invited to visit Ukraine back in 2014, when I was traveling on the Trans Siberian Railway. A nice American lady invited me to join her on a side trip to Kiev. I declined, even though it sounded interesting, and despite the fact she offered to pay. I just knew it was not for me. Now, refugess are pouring into eastern European countries, many places where I have visited. And they are probably not prepared for this onslaught. In fact, many countries have a standard of living not that much better than Ukraine, when it was comparatively peaceful. Per Business Insider (MSN):Ukraine's neighbors are preparing for a surge of refugees as a possible Russia... read more

From Fodor's: Kona’s award-winning coffee has gained popularity worldwide for its full-bodied flavor. Hawaiian coffee is more diverse than just Kona Coffee; the crop is grown across five islands in eight different regions across the state. Hawaiian coffee stands out due to its mineral-rich volcanic soil and ideal climate for growing coffee plants. Visit Maui Coffee Attic on Maui, which is a cozy mom-and-pop café with a stage and performance area in addition to fantastic drinks. Honolulu Coffee Co. now features multiple locations but has humble origins as a small kiosk in downtown Honolulu dating back to 1992.
