Well the weather continues to be simply great. Although the cold front came through and the temp this morning was in the low 40s, the sun continues to shine and the skies are as blue as they can be. The snow has been confined to the higher elevations so we haven seen any of it. The air out here is clean and fresh and the scenery beyond description. Today we went to the The Great Sand Dunes National Park. It was absolutely amazing. Who would think that there would be massive sand dunes at the base of the mountains in Colorado. Originally designated Great Sand Dunes National Monument, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was created by an act of the United States Congress on September 13, 2004 so it is a recent addition to ... read more

It seems that the weather is favouring us and the storm that was to drop snow and rain, stayed further to the north. Our route today took us first to Royal Gorge. The Royal Gorge (also known as the Grand Canyon of the Arkansas river) is a canyon on the Arkansas River near Canon City, Colorado. With a width of 50 feet at its base and a few hundred feet at its top, and a depth of 1,250 feet in places, the 10-mile-long canyon is a narrow, steep gorge through the granite of Fremont Peak. It is one of the deepest canyons in Colorado. In 1929 Canon City authorized the building of the Royal Gorge Bridge, which at 1,053 feet above the river is the highest suspension bridge over water in the world. We didn venture ... read more

Our plan for today had been to travel further west across the continental divide but the weather forecast changed our plans. Presently it is gorgeous autumn weather with sunny blue skies and temps in the 60's and 70's but there is a storm coming from the west which will drop the temperatures and bring snow. We have decided to stay on the eastern side of the continental divide until the storm passes so the weather should be a little better. Evidently there will be only one not so good day and then it will warm again. We chose the town of Salida to be our home base for the next few days. Salida anchors the Upper Arkansas River Valley in central Colorado. Although flanked by majestic 14,000-foot snow capped peaks, at just over 7,000 feet in ... read more

Our second day in Frisco we headed out to see Vail and Steamboat springs. They are popular well known ski resorts and the playgrounds of the rich and famous. Vail is very compact and crowded with the center of the village closed to traffic. It was very quiet because it's autumn so the summer crowds have gone and the winter snow and skiers have not yet arrived. There was a huge amount of building going on. It was hard to imagine that they could squeeze any more condos into such a small space but it was happening. I walked around the village for a short time and then we drove on to Steamboat Springs. The town derived it's name from the hot springs in the areas which sounded like a steamboat to early settlers. It's larger ... read more

Today we took our last ride through the Rocky Mountains National Park on the Trail Ridge Road. This east west route through to the other side was constructed in 1931 and provides a panoramic view of the Rocky Mountains in all directions. It was a gorgeous day and the temp up at the peak was about 15 degrees warmer than yesterday and the winds were not as strong so it was a pleasant day. We stopped for lunch at the same spot as yesterday and even though it was a bit warmer today it was still too cool to have an outdoor lunch. The sky down in the valley was hazy but today it seemed to be a little more clear and crisp up top. The terrain is so different on each side of the mountains. ... read more

The weather forecast for today is for very warm weather, so although we will be traveling on the Trail Ridge road across the park on Sunday, we decided to do part of the trail today and take time for photos. The day began with bright sunshine and temps in the high 60's in town. We headed out through the canyon and into Estes which is at the entrance to the park. When we reached the park gate we were told that it was some sort of National something day and that there was no entry fee. That fact, plus the nice weather told us that it would probably be quite busy in the park and we were right. There was lots of traffic but the park is so huge that it wasn't a problem at all. ... read more

What a difference the sunshine can make. The nasty weather has moved on and now the sun is shining once again. No more snow in the mountains. The skies were blue and the temp this morning was 52 degrees as we headed out for the day. We decided that even though the sun was shining here in Ft Collins and down in the valleys and canyons, that we would give the snowy mountain pass a day or two to clear before heading up there. The projected temp for the valley tomorrow is 80 so it will be in the 40's in the mountains.......normal fall weather. Frank had heard of an interesting drive near Feather Lakes, so today we headed that way. We didn't know the name but there was evidently a Buddhist Temple that was interesting. ... read more

The weather continues to control our visit here in this area. The mountain pass in the park is still closed and the skies over the mountains indicate that it is possibly snowing up there. The skies to the south of us were partially blue so we decided to head in the direction of Boulder and potentially better weather. Although Frank had researched the scenic routes well before the trip we made one slight detour was to the Colorado Welcome Center to gather more material and maps. Boulder is the home of The Flatirons and Chautauqua park. The Flatirons, named by pioneer women after the flat, metal irons used to press their clothes, are five large outcroppings of rock ranging from north to south along the east slope of Green Mountain. Information at the Chautauqua meadows told ... read more

The weather continues to be cloudy and either raining or snowing depending upon the elevation. This morning we checked the road conditions in Rocky Mountain National Park and found out that Ridge Trail, the main east west route was closed due to snow. The ranger suggested that we go to Bear Lake where there was a short trail and he said that the Aspens were in full colour. It was a one mile trail around the lake so I decided to take it. What an absolutely gorgeous walk. The air was very cool and fresh and silent and a very light snow began to fall. On one side, the lake was still and the coloured Aspens were reflecting in the water. That was one memorable walk for sure. From Bear Lake we continued on a scenic ... read more

Although the sky was very overcast and threatening, the temps were mild and the roads dry as we started out on Snow Ridge Road, our last scenic route through southern Wyoming. Wyoming is a beautiful state with so much wide open land, fresh air, wildlife, desert, high plains, prairie and mountains. We've had good weather until the last couple of days so really can't complain. Frank's friend Chuck was quite funny when he asked what were the three most important things we had learned about Wyoming. The correct answer according to Chuck is take every opportunity to stop for gas, take advantage of every bathroom you see and the third is that wind makes all the difference. He was absolutely right. Gasoline and bathrooms are few and far between out in the desert and mountainous areas ... read more
