South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Salar de Uyuni February 14th 2010

We stopped by Uyuni for a day before starting our salt flat tour. Carnival was still happening all of the country so we caught another day of the festivities. We were both very happy to be there because it is very different from carnival in Oruro. In Oruro it is more organized and the costumes were more professional. During the parade we were expecting it to be some what similar but we were very wrong. There was still a huge water fight between everyone but this time the parade was involved. The people would throw their water balloons spray their water guns at the people in the parade. It was very interesting to see the differences between the two. We were happy to see the big carnival and then the more “real” small town carnival. The ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Oruro Department » Oruro February 13th 2010

Oruro for Carnival. The carnival in Oruro is the second largest carnival in the world and we happened to be there on the biggest day. We took a bus from La Paz at three in the morning to arrive on time. When we got there the festivities had already begun. There was a huge parade going on with bleachers on both sides. You have to reserve your seats far in advance because everyone from Bolivia is there. The parade started at seven in the morning and lasts until five the next morning. The parade consisted of different groups from all over the country representing their own culture. Everyone was dressed up in their native outfits. The women dressed up with skirts and the men all had masks and huge costumes. Along with the dancers there was ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz February 7th 2010

We arrived in La Paz and found a very nice hostel. A little more expensive but it was worth it. We finally took a hot shower, which you don’t realize how nice it is until you don’t have one for a week. Our hostel had its own brewery and the beer was delicious. The stay included a free beer every night and free pancakes in the morning. We also met a lot of people here from all over the world. We spent our days in La Paz doing a little shopping, walking around, and bike riding down the world’s most dangerous road. I love the city of La Paz. The people here are very nice and it is a safe city. Also we chose to do a little cloths shopping here because we knew it would ... read more

Crossing over to Bolivia was a little more challenging then the other boarder crossing. When we were getting on our bus the bus driver noticed that we were Americans and was not happy. Apparently Americans always have problems and they take three times as long. As you can imagine Eric and I were a little nervous. When we got to the boarder crossing the bus driver was rushing us out of the bus because we were Americans. Our first problem was with getting out of Peru. We didn’t have our departure ticket so we asked the police man what to do and all he said was that we couldn’t leave the country. After a few minutes of sweating he finally told us we could buy one with a small fee attached of course. We left Peru, ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon February 1st 2010

We arrived in Arequipa and the first thing we did was set up a three day trek to Colpa Canyon, which is the highest canyon in the world. We figured since we could not do the Inca trek we were going to do a trek through the canyon. The first day in Arequipa we were still a little tired from our last trip so we took it easy and did a bus tour. The tour took us around the whole town and showed us all the sights. Arequipa is a beautiful town with three huge volcanoes in sight. We went to bed early because our tour was leaving the next day at three in the morning. The first day in our tour we headed down the Canyon. This took us about four hours to get down. ... read more

We wanted to do something special for Erics birthday so we decided to spend it on the islands of Lake Titicaca. We took a night bus to Puno then were off on a two day tour of the island. The first island that we stopped at was Uros. This was a collection of floating island made of reeds. They created these islands by putting thousands of reeds on top of each other to create a surface to build houses on. It was very interesting to see how these people live. The next island we went to was Taquile where we stayed the night. We stayed with a family here in little shacks with no electricity and mud floors. We ate our dinner by candle light. That night the town was having a little festival so Eric ... read more

South America January 24th 2010

On our way to Cuzco we had a little problem with the roads. One of the roads was completely covered by a river. There was a huge mud slide created by all the rains in the last couple of days. We had to stop and wait, along with 50 other busses and cars. It took about six hours for the workers to clear the road. They only had one small machine and they redirected the whole river. I don’t know how they did it. During our wait Eric and I received over 70 bug bites each on our legs that were painful and itchy for the next week or so. It wasn’t so bad though because during our wait we met a lot of other travellers. In Cuzco we first tried to find any tour that ... read more

After our stay in Lima we headed to beautiful Huacachina. This was an amazing little oasis that was perfect for us. After travelling for so long we were ready to take a few days to just relax. And that was what Hauacachina was all about. It is so close to the sun that the temperatures are at very hot levels. Every hostel has there own swimming pool. The first day we arrived all we did all day was lay by the swimming pool. It was very hot! We both regret laying out in the sun for so long because for the next week and half our skin was either very very sun burned or peeling off. Weeks later we are still feeling the effects. The second day we were there we went for a sand buggy ... read more

South America » Peru » Lima January 15th 2010

Our arrivel into Peru went very smoothly. After we arrived at our hostel we were very tired from our trip so we went out to eat then went to bed. The next day was when we discoverd Lima. It was a great city with many sites to see. We felt a little safer here then we did in Quito, although there were definite spots to not go. A fellow travelor that we met wanted to venture off to a more dangerous spot and the cops would not let them go. But Eric and I stayed in the safe parts of town and saw everything we wanted to see in one day. Our hostel was right on the beach which had amazing views. That night was when we had our fun. The hostel that we stayed at ... read more

South America » Ecuador » South » Cuenca January 9th 2010

Our last stop before entering Peru. We had quite and experience going down to Cuenca on the bus. During one of the many crazy turns on a mountain road there was a bus also trying to make the same turn as us. Turns out that both buses could not make that turn at the same time. Our bus ended up t boning the other bus, shattering our windshield and making very large dents in theirs. It was a good thing we were going to slow or it could have been a lot worse. This did not stop of from continuing though. The bus driver was not effected by not being able to see out of the windshield very well. Lets just hope this was the only bus accident we get into during our trip. Our first ... read more
