We spent the night in the Best Western hotel in Monterey. As I mentioned yesterday, the hotel itself isn't great in terms of its decor; however the location is literally right on the beach. So much so that the sand was directly below our room balcony. After checking out of the hotel, we headed to the Cannery Row and Fisherman's Wharf areas of Monterey. Cannery Row is the waterfront street in the New Monterey area and has some wonderful shops and restaurants. The name 'Cannery Row' is so called because it used to be the site of a number of (now-defunct) sardine canning factories. The last cannery closed in 1973. Old wooden trolley buses are a feature of Cannery Row and look great trundling up and down the streets (see attached photo). We stopped for lunch ... read more

Today we travelled up the pacific coast road on the California State Route 1 from Santa Barbara to Monterey. On the journey we stopped off at a town called Solvang, which is built in the style of a Danish town (including windmills). We had ice creams and really enjoyed the day. It reminded me a little of some of the places in Germany we visited during the 4 years we lived there during my childhood. We also stopped off to see elephant seals basking on the pacific shore line. There must have been around 50 seals within a few hundred yards and was an amazing experience. There are a couple of photos of the seals included in this blog entry. On one of the photos you'll be able to see the seal flicking sand over its ... read more

We have left LA and started the drive up the coast road. We stopped at Santa Monica again as we were driving past. The beach was the set for the tv show Baywatch; however we didn't recreate the opening credits with a run along the beach in our swim wear (instead you have a photo of the look-out tower and the iconic yellow van). We continued to Malibu beach (which wasn't particularly nice) and onto our hotel in Santa Barbara. We relaxed in the sunshine and went swimming in the outdoor pool (the picture below is the view from our room). ... read more

So today we visited Hollywood, Beverley Hills, Santa Monica plus other areas. We took a hop-on and hop-off sight-seeing bus which was great. Hollywood is a bit of a tip, especially compared with with Beverley Hills and Santa Monica. We wandered up and down the Hollywood walk of fame looking at the stars set into the pavement (sidewalk) - there is a photo of the Jimi Hendrix star associated with this blog entry. There is also a photo of Arnold Schwarzenegger's hand and foot prints that are set into the concrete outside of the famous Chinese Theatre. Yesterday when I posted the blog entry I forgot to include a photo of me with our yellow and black hire car. It certainly has a bit of poke about it, although I think I prefer our Nissan Qashqai. ... read more

After getting to sleep on Sunday night at 2am, we were awake again at 4am to leave for Heathrow. Although it was expected to be an 11 hour flight, we arrived in LA 30 minutes ahead of schedule. Those 30 minutes were soon swallowed up by the US immigration queues and the hertz car hire. It took 2 hours for hertz to find us a car, although by the number of unhappy people in their LA office, I will say we got away quite well. The hotel is very nice and is located in the downtown district of LA. On arrival we did some exploring and grabbed a bite to eat in an outdoor restaurant (the weather is lovely). We will be taking a hop on and hop off bus tour around the famous Hollywood areas ... read more

Welcome to our USA road trip blog! There is currently just less than 12 hours to go before our flight to Los Angeles to begin our holiday. On arrival we will collect our hire car and then will begin our ~2500mile journey. One of the highlights is likely to be the helicopter flight over the Grand Canyon; however I don't really like heights and so it'll make for an interesting experience. Having said that, it may be safer than Nicky driving on the wrong side of the road. Gulp! Below is our itinerary: 3-5 June - Los Angeles - 2 nights at 'Omni Los Angeles' 5-6 June - Santa Barbara - 1 night at 'Best Western Plus Pepper Tree Inn' 6-7 June - Monterey - 1 night at 'Best Western Plus Beach Resort Monterey' 7-10 June ... read more
