Sunset III

Hmm--paradise or big city?
Good call staying in that sweet bungalow on that gorgeous beach, lolling about. K was right--tons of little crabs are creepy, and the little fish drying with no gulls or dogs around was weird. But relaxing on the beach and gorging on seafood--perfection.

...I am by no means a pro photographer, just nice when the odd one turns out...

Leg-Rowing Fisherman

Balancing act
I have always been fascinated by these fishermen... and I'm loving following your Burma travels. Do you mind if I ask what camera you are using? You seem to get so much light and clarity in some of your photos.

Thank you...
...glad you're enjoying my blog...the fishermen are fantastic, the balancing act you mention is quite something...I picked up a Nikon S9700 point and shoot, it's of the "superzoom" variety (30x Optical) which came in handy but tough to get non-blurry photos at full zoom...think the pics turned out okay for the most part, I did touch up the first pic of Inle (leg-rowing fisherman) with a trial copy of Corel Paint Shop but the rest are raw I believe..

Visas accepted--there's no escape!
Sad you were sick, but glad you were able to rally for the wine-tasting and Shan meal. The lake sounds lovely--amazing leg rowers and how lucky to come across a festival. Also great to hear that one can just show up and find a fine place to stay, so you have the freedom to decide at the last minute when it's time to leave.

Leg-Rowing Fisherman

No escape indeed...haha...
The lake was amazing, great watching daily life unfold as we zipped down canals and water streets...it was the time of year more than anything that made it easy to just show up and find accommodation, the high season started in November and apparently everything gets booked up, advance reservations a must...a big reason we like to travel in shoulder seasons, especially October...less tourists...

Women drying hats on the beach...

Happy Birthday, Lovely K!
Glad you two got some pasta and proper wine for a celebration. While I think that first shot is amazing, I also like these slice of life ones. Great also that you were able to discern the uniqueness of the temples. I'm a bit of a church/sacred space maven, and in Europe, it was so annoying when people would say they all looked alike--clearly, they were looking closely. Still, great to have a pool when templed out.

Bagan
We enjoyed our time in Bagan but got sensory overload on all the temples. What a fantastic shot. Keep them coming.

Thanks!
Quite easy to get templed out, it is truly overwhelming...loved it though, one of the highlights of the trip for me...

Mandalay
We experienced two earthquakes while we were in Mandalay. We felt the same way that you did about going soon before the country changes too much. Inle Lake was one of my favorite spots. The number and beauty of the temples.....

Earthquakes?
Yikes...luckily didn't experience those...yeah, the country seems to be opening up at a rapid pace; Visa is everywhere now (and in the oddest locations) and hotels are being built on what seems like every block...gonna change for sure...Inle was awesome, as was Bagan and Ngapali Beach, more on those to come...

Kuthodaw Paya

Pagoda City!
Whirlwind taxi tours followed by a lazy boat ride--I guess you'll be experiencing a lot of contrasts in this country, ie places that look close, but then are far away. Gorgeous pagodas--love that contrast of gold and pink. I must say that I adore that you call you partner, the Lovely K. Indeed she is, but you are so sweet to call her so. Hope the boat ride is sweet.

Thanks Tara...
Boat ride was sweet, was nice to have a down day of watching the world go by...it's a cool country, lots of contrast and still very real, glad we went when we did...

Love these silver linings!
So, the Temple of the Golden Buddha houses a previously stucco Buddha, who turned out to be gold. And you are going to Myanmar, but happened on Bangkok with its great temples, Buddhas, boxing and beer. Hope these magical surprises follow you into Burma.

Monastery...

The navel and the roof of the earth!
How fabulous you chose to visit these wondrous sites! So many visit Greece and never make it all the way out to Meteora, one of my fave spots in the country. I went, planning to spend a day, and ended up staying three weeks, hiking and walking up to all the monasteries and chatting with the priests. Santorini and the islands are wonderful, but this seemed to be the heart of this mountainous country. Great photos and blog--thanks!

Ah Meteora...
Thank you for the kind words...was so glad we went, two colleagues of mine used to live in Greece and both recommended it, so we dropped one island and toured inland instead, absolutely fantastic...hope to return some day and spend more time at Meteora, the monasteries were fabulous...jealous of your three weeks!
