The reason we met at La Pine was to visit the Lava Lands and the High Desert Museum. The girls also had fun riding their bikes around the campground, playing on grandpa's hammock and chasing squirrels and chipmunks!! On Friday we packed up camp and moved on down to Diamond Lake Forest Service Campground close to Crater Lake. Again we were very fortunate to get a PERFECT spot, all as a result of a slip up in the office. While the guys were checking out a site to see if we would fit, the other person in the office sold that spot not knowing that we were next in line. They felt so bad they sent us to another site which was even nicer!! Unfortunately the day we went to Crater Lake it was very smoky ... read more

After a break to "rest up" for all the activity with the grandchildren Dwain hooked up the RV again and we set off for Oregon only this time we were headed to the high desert near Bend, OR. We drove down I-5 to Everett and then across Steven's Pass to Wenatchee. There is a beautiful State Park here at the confluence of the Columbia and Wenatchee rivers. Next day we drove down Hwy 97 as far as Maryhill State Park on the bank of the Columbia River. This is an area very popular for Wind Surfing as it is usually quite windy up the gorge. Wednesday, Aug. 22 we met up with Richard and his girls at the State Park in La Pine. Another beautiful place to camp.... read more

Our Summer started out with Richard and his girls visiting at our house in Canada at the end of June. The last two days they were with us Tori and Kyra also came to stay and then travelled with us to Oregon. We all were back in Salem for the fireworrks on July 4 in Independance. All the girls had a great time together, swimming in the pool at the RV Park where Dwain and I will be staying for a month. Rebekah and Dan drove down to the Oregon coast on Friday and the whole family (except for David's) met out at Lincoln City for a day at the beach together. Tori and Kyra then went backhome to Canada with their mom and dad.... read more

2011-08-15 Stewart to Hazelton, BC The community of Hazelton sits at the confluence of the Bulkley and Skeena Rivers. Our campground for the night was at the ‘Ksan Village and Museum. It is a reconstruction of the traditional Gitxsan Village which has stood at this site for centuries. There are 7 traditionally styled cedar longhouses, as well as various totem poles and dugout canoes. On the way into the village and campground you cross the Bulkley River on a single lane bridge high above the canyon and river. Originally this was just a suspension bridge with rough timber for the deck of the bridge. It would have taken a lot of nerve to have crossed the bridge at that time. Now it is made of concrete and steel which feels much safer. Another interesting place was ... read more

August 12 -13, 2011 Iskut & Stewart, BC Our night in Watson Lake was quite interesting as we met the owner and hostess of the RV Park in their Restaurant for a dinner together. She was born and raised in the Yukon and the family owned and operated a Jade mine. We learned a lot about Jade which is a very hard stone. Apparently they have a large piece of Jade in front of the Jade Gift shop with a sledge hammer for you to try to break it. So far, no one has been successful!! We were able to get some great pictures of a stone cutter working on the Jade with a large saw. Inside the store there was a lot available to buy – figurines, jewelry, carvings etc. That evening we also met ... read more

August 9 – 10, 2011 DAWSON CITY TO WHITEHORSE, YT Our drive to Whitehorse was a full day and rather uneventful, at least for us. Our tail-gunner, Pudge Wright, had engine trouble with his pick-up and had to be towed into Whitehorse, arriving about 10:30 p.m. He has to wait for a day for the part needed to fix the problem. Fortunately there have not been any other major problems with any of the other rigs and no accidents. Dinner was provided again after our arrival in Whitehorse. It was a wonderful BBQ steak, baked potatoes and salad, and of course a delicious dessert. The dinner was held in the banquet room at the RV park. Wednesday morning we were picked up in the bus and taken to the banks of the Yukon to board a ... read more

August 8, 2011 DAWSON CITY, YT Today is our 47th Anniversary!! What an interesting place to be spending it. The tour bus picked us up at 10:00 a.m. and took us up to the top of “The Dome” for a view over the city of Dawson and the surrounding area. From there we traveled out to one of the largest Gold Dredges ever built which operated from 1905-1965. Dredge #4 was designed in Ohio, but many of the parts were built on-site here in Dawson City, and then it was put to work in the Klondike River valley. As you can tell from the pictures, it was designed to move huge quantities of dirt and the dredges dug up this entire river valley and all the feeder river valleys for miles around. The valley is now ... read more

August 7, 2011 TOK, AK to DAWSON CITY, YT UNBELIEVABLE!! There was a light rain through the night and this morning the skies are clear and sunny!! Just enough rain to settle the dust on our road today as we take a left turn out of Tok and follow Hwy 5, Taylor Highway, also known as “Top of the World Highway” to Dawson City. This road is 40% paved and 60% gravel, very winding and narrow with sheer drop-offs (no guard rails) and hairpin bends. It is open for only 4 months during the summer season. As we climbed farther and farther up the mountains into the tundra we were very fortunate to have clear vistas of the surrounding mountains - almost 360 degree views. The old settlement of Chicken was an interesting stop. In the ... read more

August 6, 2011 FAIRBANKS TO TOK, AK As we left Fairbanks this morning we were grateful for sunny skies once again. Heading south now along the Richardson Highway we passed the little town of North Pole once again, then just a little further out we noticed snowcapped mountains to our right. Everyone got very excited thinking that we would finally see Mt. McKinley because the mountains were very clear. However, when we arrived in Delta Junction at the Visitor’s center we were told that you could not see Mt. McKinley from this road because it was too far away. Our first stop along the way was to visit the Knotty Shop. This interesting little gift shop has a collection of burl creations out front as well as an impressive burl railing along the front of the ... read more

August 1 – 6, 2011 FAIRBANKS It felt good to be able to park the RV for several nights and not have to hook up each morning and move on!! Our time here in Fairbanks took in many of the special places to visit in the area so we will simply highlight the places we visited and let the pictures do the rest. North Pole, AK North Pole is known as the home of Santa Claus and his workshop. In December many letters arrive at the post office addressed to Santa. School children and senior citizens all take part in answering these letters. Here we enjoyed dinner together at the Elf’s Inn and then went across the road to visit the Santa Claus House and Santa’s reindeer. The North Pole Visitors Information Center was a very ... read more
