Geo: 36.0846, -115.172This morning we had a good breakfast at the Paris Hotel across the street. We walked around the Flamingo Hotel property (nice outdoor area). Next, hopped the "Deuce" bus downtown. Cari slept for much of the way, and the driver kept saying "Hold on everyone, Rollin' the Deuce" in a Peter Griffin type voice every time he left a stop. We spent a couple hours at the mob museum learning about the rise and fall of organized crime in America. Funny how Kansas City plays so much into mob stories related to Vegas, being the westernmost controlled city in the country.Next we walked around downtown Vegas, saw some of the famous neon, like the cowboy and the Golden Nugget. Saw the Plaza Hotel a.k.a. Biff Tannen's Pleasure Paradise from BTTF2. Went to the Pawn ... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172Today it rained all day long. In the morning we walked to the bus stop and rode north a few stops to Circus Circus / Riviera. From there we walked over to the Westgate to rent a car from Hertz. From there we drove in the rain to the Hoover Dam about an hour outside of town. We took the full $30 dam tour that goes through the generator room and into the actual dam out to the middle lookout area. It's amazing to see so much concrete, and so much of it is invisible. The water level at the damn is relatively low. They are changing some of the turbine heads out for ones optimized for lower water pressure. After returning the rental car around 3pm, we walked back to see Circus Circus and ... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172We spent most of the day walking around the strip south of the Bellagio. The flat terrain and tall buildings deceive you when walking around. I found that distances were about 4 times further than I believed them to be. We had pizza lunch at NY-NY and dinner at the Aria buffet. The steak wasn't great but enjoyed the unlimited shrimp cocktail and salmon. In the evening we saw the Beatles "Love" Cirque show at the Mirage. I remember it was at the Mirage because at the time I thought it was at the MGM Grand and we had to pay a taxi to haul ass back once I realized we walked the wrong way. It was really amazing and everything I hoped for in being a visualization of the original recordings. During the pre-show ... read more

Geo: 36.0846, -115.172Today we took our first vacation together without Carmen. She is in the capable hands of my parents for five nights. Seeing her off went well and we followed soon after towards the airport. The flight was uneventful and we had a decent view of the strip during the last 2000 feet of descent. The taxi-stand was mostly empty, but I could tell it was well organized to handle hundreds of people in the queue boarding 25 taxis at a time. At that moment I suspected that our taxi, and the whole town, was not a place I was going to have to fight to get my money's worth. That turned out to be the theme of the trip. The taxi was about the cleanest and smoothest I'd ever been in. We had a ... read more

Geo: -12.0931, -77.0465My pre-arranged cabbie was asleep outside when I knocked on his window at 5am. The ride to the airport was a quiet one. I forgot to ask for a window seat on check-in, but they sat me in the back where several rows were open so I at least got a west facing window on the left side of the plan. The path from La Paz to Lima is quite scenic as you fly over high mountainous terrain that eventually gives way to the ocean. At Lima, I took a Green Taxi (supposed to be safe) for $12 to a hostel in a nice neighborhood. I'm not staying the night, but the hostel costs the same as a locker at the airport, but also comes with a shower and toilet. I left my bag ... read more

Geo: -16.4983, -68.146My goal today is to walk as far as I can in the same downhill direction Kevin and I walked on Tuesday. The first hour was uneventful and took me to the yellow Teleferico station where we had stopped prior (although, I found a shorter route). There are several curves near the station but then the road straightens out for another 4 km. The first 2km is a more urban area with taller newer buildings. The second 2km is more like a suburban highway with limited road entrances and a large median made of the drainage creek. At the bottom was a fenced off park or simple amusement park of some kind. It didn't appear anyone was paying, until I walked through the gate, then suddenly someone found me and took me back to ... read more

Geo: -16.4983, -68.146Today's the day I've been looking forward to for at least a month. A downhill mountain bike ride from the top of the Andean Continental Divide down the east side into the jungle.I met my group around the corner from my hotel at an Italian cafe. The group was a handful of Germans, a handful of Brits, an Irish/Thai couple, and a Brazilian guy that I ended up hanging out with much of the time. We rode for about 45 minutes out of La Paz in a minibus full of gear and a set of bikes on top. We stopped where the road crests the continental divide. Outside the van they provide each of us with our named bike, a helmet, gloves, pair of leather overpants, and windproof jacket. It was lightly snowing with ... read more

Geo: -16.4983, -68.146This morning we walked over to the base of the Teleferico (Unique Urban Gondola System) red line. It was only finished back in May of this year so it still has the wax on it so to speak. The system is designed to be to help people commute up and down the hill from El Alto, the poor suburb of the main city. The cost per ride is a reasonable B3 or $0.43. The red line stops at the city center, the cemetery district, and the plateau near the airport. I took several pictures of the ride. Near the top is a car that apparently rolled off the plateau wedged itself into a crevice in the steep hillside. At the top we turned around and came back to our starting point near the cathedral. ... read more
