Our first full day in San Francisco was tremendous! This is a city like no other and is one of my absolute favorites. Between the bustling streets, fantastic food and drink and lot's to do and see, our time here is speeding by. I can see why so many song writers have had this city in mind - Chris Isaak, Otis Redding and let's never forget that the one, the only Tony Bennett left his heart here. I can totally see why. We awoke early and enjoyed fresh tomato juice and coffee in our room. Decided quickly to shower up and head to the California Academy of Sciences. One egregious oversight on my part - Jim HATES riding on public buses. Hates - couldn't be more clear. I kept thinking that we would avoid a hefty ... read more

We arrived in San Francisco, the city on the bay after a 6 hour drive. The drive was beautiful, through agricultural communities that grow vast quantities of produce. Only ran into traffic at the very end as we entered the city, but even that wasn’t too bad – we got very lucky for a Friday afternoon. The Omni hotel chain is now officially my favorite. We’ve stayed first in New Orleans and on this trip in San Francisco and the stay, service and staff are top notch. Knowing that some of our nights in small town Oregon won’t afford rooms like these, we splurged on a suite on the 17th floor with arched windows that look out onto much taller high rises with architectural features that are unparalleled. We got settled and had a knock on ... read more

Departure morning is finally here! I am supposed to be packing my laptop and not posting a blog, but I was packed about a week ago and am all showered up and raring to go. Today we head to San Francisco, where I imagine a culinary and cultural adventure awaits. We are staying right smack dab in the middle of the city - all within striking distance of all the places we hope to visit this trip. My wish list: Dim sum at Yank Sing - www.yanksing.com The California Academy of Sciences - www.calacademy.org Roast crab at Thanh Long, home of the famous roasted crab on the secret kitchen dishes section of the menu and made with secret spices. Who doesn't love secrets!?! - www.anfamily.com The Picasso exhibit at the DeYoung - deyoung.famsf.org The amazing irish ... read more

Well, it's been one year since our epic journey - California to New Orleans with stops in Arizona, Texas, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas, Utah and Neveda. So many times in the past year, we have recounted just how amazing that trip was and clearly led into a very exciting year for us both! We bought our first house and moved in at Christmastime 2010. It is fantastico! A two-story with travertine tiles, a beautiful kitchen island and a yard that we just finished having landscaped. We have spent so much time (and so much money!) on making it ours. This summer vacation 2011 couldn't come at a better moment. Five days ago my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer, but one of her earliest demands to Jim and I was that we were not, under any circumstances, ... read more

It's been almost one week since we returned and the most consistent comment from anyone has been "so then what happened? Your blog left us hanging!" Before I tie this incredible trip up, let me recap the last blissful days of our journey. I left off as we arrived in Escalante, Utah. Easily becoming one of our favorite places, this town is small and surrounded by the most amazing mountains and petrified sandstone formations. The vast majority of our visit this year was during a thunderstorm - seems to be the story of our trip, huh? But we welcomed the rain and the thunder and lightening. We both felt tired and appreciated two quiet days to unwind and reminisce about our travels. The house is owned by a couple who live next door - a bit ... read more

What a beautiful morning here in Escalante, Utah - home of the Grand Staircase National Monument. We checked in early evening last night following our stay in Moab. Let me get you caught up... On Tuesday morning we started the morning off with breakfast, a seemingly innocent activity that I would pay for dearly. Not thinking that there would be anything further to think about after breakfast, I proceeded to get sick. Headache, queasy and generally not well - but that didn't stop us for heading out to newspaper rock and and the south entrance of Canyonlands National Park and the the Needles District. It was magnificent! Newspaper Rock always captures my imagination. The petroglyphs tell stories that no one has yet deciphered which is fine by me! I love to imagine what they all mean. ... read more

We have spent much of our time the past two days relaxing and smoothing our feathers - reminiscing about our trip, what we've seen and what we have thought about it all. One word - AMAZING!! I feel so incredibly fortunate to have had four weeks of uninterrupted time with my husband and best friend. We have laughed, lugged suitcases, duffle bags, camera cases and laptops all over this beautiful county of ours. Moab has given us the peace to reflect and digest a bit and has afforded us some magnificent sights in its own right. We moved our hotel room to the suite that we have stayed in for the past five years - it was a hassle but well worth it. It made for a very late start to the day and we were ... read more

I never get tired of the last 30 miles outside of Moab, when the wind turns dry and hot and the rock formations begin to take on a rust colored hue. It is very other-worldly and yet, feels like coming home. I never tire of the anticipation of arriving in a place that is like no other. A place known for restoration, relaxation and re-energizing. Crossing over the Colorado River at a wide spot on a brand new bridge that was only in scaffolding last year, we arrived late yesterday afternoon to Moab, Utah. Jim brought me here June of 2001 for the first time on our very first road trip to Salt Lake to meet his folks. We only spent one night, but I remember it fondly. For the past five years, this stop has ... read more

The drive into Colorado Springs was plagued by lots and lots of road construction - an occurrence we have encountered throughout the country. Funded primarily from federal stimulus money, the road construction has clearly put many people back to work. Bummer that it's in the middle of the longest road trip of our lives (thus far, anyways!). The two lane highways are merged into one lane where the ongoing traffic is held up on the other side for 15-20 minutes at a time. Frustrating when you get 30-45 miles away from your destination after being on the road for hours and hours! But we got here and checked into the Antlers Hilton in Colorado Springs, Colorado. One observation - we really suspect that the recession is over. There are so many people in restaurants, shopping, staying ... read more

We've had a couple of days with spotty internet connections and a lot of traveling since leaving Kansas City, Missouri on Tuesday, including driving almost entirely across the great state of Kansas on our way to our first truly Western stop in weeks - Colorado. Kansas was very flat (no duh!) with wide open stretches of highway in between small, small towns. Jim had perfectly planned out this leg of the trip, taking into consideration the fact that there is very little out there on the open road. In fact, the state of Kansas capitalizes on this with a strange toll system - you take a ticket as the start of the highway and then have to pay a sliding scale toll when you exit. The longer you are on the highway, the higher your toll. ... read more
