Thursday. Our last day in Paris. Today we went to Euro Disneyland as a treat for the students. About an hour’s travel to get there. Theme parks are mostly about queuing, although it wasn’t too bad, being a weekday, and our longest queue was for about 45 minutes. I went on the following rides: Thunder Mountain Railroad, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril, Pirates of the Caribbean, Star Tours and The Haunted Mansion. Not a bad day overall, and the boys were well behaved. Some went a bit crazy in the very many souvenir shops. Overall, our time in France was very good. We had an extremely busy itinerary, and had to drop some things from it. We had late nights and early mornings. The weather was fantastic, beyond expectations. This morning (Friday), as we ... read more

Tuesday. Another warm and sunny day. Not a cloud in the sky. Today we went on a full-day guided tour of the Somme WWI battelfields. First we visited the Australian War Memorial near Villers-Bretonneux. It was being prepared for the Anzac Day service in a couple of weeks, and was looking very neat and tidy. We were able to climb to the top of the tower, for outstanding views of the surrounding countryside. It is an inspiring and moving place, and the long shadows cast by the gravestones were emotive. We conducted a brief memorial service at the grave of one of the unknown Australian soldiers. We then proceeded to Villers-Bretonneux village, destroyed in the war and rebuilt with help from the Australian forces. There are many tributes to Australia there, the main one being the ... read more

Sunday. Today we had a return to warm, sunny weather, and we set off for a day touring the Loire Valley. First of all we visited the Château Chenonçeau, which bridges the Cher River, and is set in magnificent grounds which include formal and informal gardens, and forest. This château has an interesting history, and the grounds are very peaceful if one walks into the forest a bit. We then proceeded to Amboise for lunch, followed by a tour of the very impressive château/castle which overlooks and dominates the town. What remains is only a fraction of the original great fortress, but includes some amazing features, such as the chapel overhanging the walls, the broad spiral ramps inside the towers, built so that the king/nobles could ride their horses and bring carriages up from the entrances ... read more

Saturday. This was our first cloudy day, quite a bit cooler than those preceding. Today we left Paris and travelled to Tours on the Loire River. In the morning, before our departure from Paris, we visited a local market for an hour or so. A sumptuous array of produce was on display, and most of us bought a few tasty treats. I can say that the raspberries and the roasted cashews were both delicious. Fruits, vegetables, seafood, olives, cheeses and much more was available. A number of the boys bought hats – I am sure the stall holder was delighted to sell five hats in one go! We departed Gare Montparnasse just after noon for our 239 km trip to Tours. This took 67 minutes, an average speed of 214 km/h, including two intermediate stops. I’ll ... read more

Friday. Today we set off again in the morning to visit le Louvre, and upon arrival we were delighted to discover that with our Paris Museum Passes we had priority entry. What can one say about le Louvre? It is a small local museum with a few famous and/or important paintings, sculptures, etc.... Ha, ha. On this visit, I myself focused on Greek and Roman sculptures, and also viewed the galleries with furnishings of Louis XIV. I particularly liked dramatic sculptures, and those featuring mythical creatures such as centaurs, dryads, etc. Also saw some early pre-bronze age and bronze age artifacts. After lunch in the Tuileries Gardens, we walked the length of les Champs Élysées to l’Arc de Triomphe. It is quite a climb to the top of this great monument, but worth it as it ... read more

Thursday our itinerary took us to le Louvre in the morning - only to find that it was closed for the day due to a strike! We revised our plan by switching Thursday's and Friday's morning schedule, and we headed off to Le Bourget (a northern suburb) to visit the Air & Space Museum. After a train ride and a true Parisian experience crammed onto a bus, we arrived. A fabulous museum, the highlight of which, for several of us, was to see Concorde. They also had an excellent space display, with many satellites and rockets. They even have full sized Ariane 3 and Ariane 5 rockets outside. Also halls with many aircraft, from the Wright Flyer onwards. Particularly interesting was the hall of helicopters and the between-the-wars aircraft. We returned to the city and after ... read more

Tuesday started with an ascent of La Tour Eiffel. We arrived early enough to only wait in the queue for about an hour. It is truly an extraordinary structure, so massive yet so graceful. Needless to say, the view was stunning. Most of us walked down from the second level. We had a contest for the most creative photo - one of my best efforts is shown at right. We then walked to Les Invalides, saw Napoleon's tomb, and visited the museum. Margaret & Phillip, you will be pleased to know that I visited the Museum of Plan-Reliefs. After lunch we travelled to the garden of the Palais Royal for a sketching workshop with a local artist. Many of us (including myself) were surprised by latent skill. It is something one might never normally take the ... read more

First day in Paris! A public holiday so little traffic, but lots of people in the parks and gardens. Arrived safely at CDG after about 24 hours in planes and airports. Can recommend the Boeing 777 (Sydney-Singapore), even better than the A380 (Singapore-Paris). A public holiday today, so little traffic but many people out in the parks and gardens. Visited le Jardin des Plantes where we saw our first animals in an enclosure there - wallabies! We did a cycle tour from La Tour Eiffel to le Louvre and back. Fantastic sunny weather - many of us were sunburned, though it was cool (about 15 Celsius). Great day!... read more
