Tuesday 4th June Having received advice from the host at my gîte last night, I decided to get an early start to visit Mont St Michel before the crowds – and what good advice it turned out to be! I headed off at about 7.30am and arrived at the parking lot at Mont St Michel about an hour later. I was just in time to catch a shuttle bus immediately, and having arrived at Mont St Michel, had time for photography and a leisurely walk up the back way (avoiding all the shops) to the abbey just before it opened. Consequently I was only in a bunch of about 30 or 40 people going through the abbey. I hired an audio guide gadget, which was great as it explained the history and architecture. Mont St Michel ... read more

Monday 3rd June Yesterday as I drove in the Monts d'Arrée area, I had seen road signs for Mont St Michel, which I didn't think was really nearby. But this was not the well known Abbey Mont St Michel, but another. Consulting the map later, I found that in this area, one of the highest peaks is Mont St Michel, which overlooks Lac St Michel. So, heading off this morning, I decided to visit Mont St Michel as it was not far away. It was possible to drive almost to the top, which was convenient. On top there is a chapel and a 360 degree view. The altitude is less than 400m, but it was cold and windy. There was a good view across Lac St Michel and one could see the nuclear power station on ... read more

Sunday 2nd June This morning there was a market in Guilvinec, so I went there first thing to have a look at all the amazing fresh produce and food stalls, as well as stalls selling clothes, cosmetics and even mattresses. I bought some strawberries and some cashews, both delicious. I then headed off to see the Eckmühl Lighthouse, only about 15 mins away, located at the extreme south-western point of Brittany. It is an impressive structure, and I paid my entry and climbed the 307 steps up the dizzying spiral staircase to the top. The view was impressive, and I could easily see back across the bay to Guilvinec, as well as north along the west coast of Brittany. I then headed off in a north-westerly direction to go to Pointe du Raz, which sticks out ... read more

Saturday 1st June Guilvinec This morning I headed off from my overnight stop in the country and deliberately stayed off the main roads, taking more interesting byways. Before long I came across the charming town of St-Nicholas-des-Eaux, on the Blavet River. It was cool, but still and quiet there in the morning sunshine. There was a lock on the river and a pleasant park and hillside overlooking. From there I drove up the hill to an historic lookout. At this place the river does an almost complete loop, and the lookout has views down both sides of the bluff to the river. There is an historic railway bridge down there, but it was not possible to see it due to the trees – one could see part of the old railway line on the other side ... read more

Friday 31st May Having arrived back from Nantes this morning, after an early lunch I took my bag and headed off on the train to Rennes, where I picked up a rental car for my tour around Brittany. The car was an Opel Corsa – small car, rival to the VW Polo, but not as good, in my opinion. It was OK but lacked power and even in top gear was revving hard at 110 km/h on the motorways. I prefer travelling on the back roads as much as possible, when time allows. You see much more and there is often no traffic. The little French villages are very charming but there sure are a lot of them, each with 30 km/h zones, speed bumps, etc to negotiate. Google maps just loves backroads, heading off the ... read more

Thursday 30thMay Today was a public holiday for Ascension Day, and this would be a busy weekend in France, as a lot of people would ‘font le pont’ and take Friday off to get a four-day weekend. My hosts planned an overnight trip for us to Nantes – we would be staying with friends of theirs. After lunch we headed off and after about an hour we arrived. The friends of my hosts took us out walking and we headed for the port. Nantes is on the Loire River, just about 10 or 15 km from its mouth at St Nazaire. Nantes is also one end of the Nantes-Brest Canal, mentioned previously. Hence Nantes was a very important port ands ship-building centre. The port is now primarily for pleasure craft, and there was an excited crowd ... read more

Europe » France » Brittany » Redon May 29th 2019

Tuesday 28th May Today I took the train from Guipry-Messac to Redon, downstream to the south. This is only about a 20 minute train trip, Redon is actually closer to Guipry-Messac than Rennes is. Redon is a middle-sized town, but its importance lay in its port, and its role as an inland navigation crossroads. It lies close to the tidal limit of the Vilaine, at the point where the Nantes-Brest Canal crosses the Vilaine, and where the River Oust joins the Vilaine. All these factors made it an important port, tax and customs post, and boat building place. As well as the canal and rivers, it has a basin port which accesses both the canal and the Vilaine. It's all quite complicated, and there is a real profusion of locks, docks, and bridges, including swing bridges ... read more

Sunday 19th May – Friday 24th May I was sick for this period. Most likely a gluten response due to accidental intake. This is the longest period of time I have been sick following gluten intake. The trials and tribulations of having Coeliac Disease. Saturday 25th May I was nearly better today with just some stomach pains remaining. I decided to get out and about a bit again. In the afternoon I went for a riverside bike ride for about an hour. It's always very pleasant along the river. This weekend in Guipry-Messac was a junior soccer extravaganza. There were plenty of teams from around France and greater Europe in attendance, they had three reduced-size fields going, and lots of games sere played. They also had rides and sideshows, as well as a disco and fireworks ... read more

Saturday 18th May This morning I got up early to go to Angers by train for the day. This was mainly in order to meet my French teacher from Gosford, who moved back to France this year. The train from Guipry-Messac was at 7:54, followed by a 51 minute wait in Rennes for the train to Angers – about twice as long as the train trip from Guipry to Rennes! I arrived at Angers at about 10:45. Angers immediately struck me as a vibrant city, very clean and well looked after, with people in all the public places. I made my way to the enormous and imposing château, built on a bluff overlooking the river Maine. The huge dry moat, walls and towers, and the sheer size of the castle are all remarkable. I went looking ... read more

Sunday 12th May This morning I went to Mass at the church in Guipry. There was a choir but the hymns were not very bright – they seemed heavy rather than uplifting. At the house I helped with some gardening – planting tomatoes and zucchini in the vegetable garden, which is a few doors down, behind the big old house I've mentioned before. I have also started the planning of my trip in southern Germany, for about a week before I fly home, and this took up a lot of time today – trying to devise an itinerary and book hotels. I have decided to do part by train as I travel towards Munich, and part by rental car from Munich. I have planned the driving days (about 4 days) along the German Alpine Road, and ... read more
