Thursday 11th Feb 2010 Chaing Mai to Chang Kong (Thai-Laos border) Well after quite a pleasant drive in a posh minibus with some mature canadian tourists to the border town we arrived to some rather grotty digs! 6 quid for what can only be described as a cell like bathroom with a bed in it, no thank you siree, I imagine there is lots of that to come in Laos so we shall seek some better digs while we can. Just around the corner we found a room for 7 pounds, 350 baht with bathroom, ac, tv etc....bargain. The Canadian tourists followed and booked in, they were with an arranged trip from Chang Mai which includes all transport and accommodtaion etc, unfortuntaley they were ripped off! We went out on the search for some good grub, ... read more

Monday 15th February, 2010 Vieng Phouka Trek Our trek organiser Mr Boung Louang ( I think) assured us in very good very smiley english that water and all food would be supplied and after our Chiang Mai trek where the food was good and plentiful I made the decision not to take personal rations...............mmmmmmmmh....not a good move it turns out. I also left our puritabs and a few other essentials that I later missed. Anyway, all started reasonably well with quite a punctual and sort of organised entry to the jungle via pick up truck. Starting in a Khmu village which was home to some 400 people living in stilt houses this seemed a stark contrast to the Thai Hill tribe villages we saw which seemed very contrived and almost placed and designed for tourism. ... read more

BKK to Chiang Mai (Dave) Well it has now been quite a while since we got chance to blog. Am writing this on 12 February at a bus station in Huai Xai which is a border town in Laos. . Prior to leaving Bkk we had a couple of hours on Kao San Rd where I restocked with tobacco (Golden Virginia under 5 quid for 50 grams) and enjoyed a couple of pints. The taxi driver we hired to take us to the station refused to put his meter on but agreed to take us for just over 3 quid and proved to be quite an astute and helpful young fellow. He suggested we booked digs for Chiang Mai at the TAT (Tourist Authority Thailand) office near the station. Suspicious as always, we reluctantly agreed but ... read more

Anna Ko Tao 3rd Feb 2010 Well before we leave I will just briefly describe my diving course.......I actually did the SSI diving course not the PADI (they are the same) as the only difference was that you had to buy the book for 18 quid , which was fine but then I would have to carry it around with me for 2 months........not ideal and everyone else was in the same mind. I had only 3 in my group, 4 including the instructor Pierre, a french guy who actually sounded English his english was so perfect, so we were really lucky as most other groups had 6-7. I was absolutely gutted that Dave couldn't do the course with me but just got on with it as it is the one of the best and cheapest ... read more

Wednesday 27th January Surat Thani to Ko Tao: Night Boat Well we were very pleasantly surprised to arrive at the pier in Surat Thani (after a battle with the tuc tuc driver, we were NOT going to pay 6 quid for a ten minute journey!) to find a very relaxed vibe, loads of tables and chairs set up alongside the boats with numerous little stalls selling everything from jelly and icecream, pork chops to prawn pancakes. Booked our boat ticket, 600 baht each (12 quid each) and grabbed a beer. We were more than 2 hours early, along with everyone else as nobody has any idea what to expect or if there are limited places. We spotted our boat, being loaded with motorbikes, fish, vegetables, you name it and through the top windows we could ... read more

Monday 18th January Ko Phi Phi (Cont') Dave Quick word on cash: exchange rate is now 52.5 baht = 1 GBP. ATM withdrawals are all charged 150 baht on top of whatever your bank charges. After a marvellous dinner and a few beers on Sunday night we found ourselves quite worn out so returned to our cell like quarters where we were grateful for the fact it had no windows as we did not really wish to see or smell what was outside. In bed by 9 oclock, we slept like logs and were not further harassed by any biting, stinging or blood sucking menaces. We had been lucky enough to spot what seemed like a good deal amongst the many trips and tours offered by the multitude of travel agents and booked a days sailing ... read more

Well we are days behind on this blog as whenever there is little to do there is no internet, and when there is plenty to do wifi can be found everywhere! Typical! We shall try and backtrack a little.... Saturday 9th jan Night train from Bangkok to Surat Thani, (2nd class a/c sleeper 12 hours , app 650 km app 18 quid each) All very organised and a really comfortable trip!! Within minutes of boarding our train, a man came round and offered us beer, food and asked whether we wanted to order breakfast? Wow , how different to Indian trains!! We boarded about 8pm and by 9.30pm a young man came down the carriage and made everyone's bed for them! Clean sheets and pillow cases and hung curtains up so those walking down the ... read more

BANGKOK ( “Well, she's my wife now”) Don't panic Mr Manwaring!! No, Anna and I haven't eloped and got married in secret, the subtitle is purely something I seem to have heard or overheard so many times since I arrived that it seemed worthy of quoting. To those that have been to this very interesting city I'm sure that makes sense and for those who haven't.........well please use your imagination or buy a ticket!! Before I start this blog in earnest, I must say that I fully understand now why I haven't written one before; there is always so much exploring and so much fun to be had while travelling, that writing about it is very hard to fit in. As Anna often barks at me “There won't be anything to write about if you spend ... read more

THE GREAT ESCAPE 5 Jan 10 Well, it seems that our timing was spot on! As we headed south on a freezing cold “Mega Bus” we had no idea that we were being followed down the country by the blizzards that were going to make things so grim and totally horrid for you all. As we took off from Heathrow, the snow had just started in London and as the northern airports had all been closed on and off all day we considered ourselves lucky to get away only a few minutes later than planned. First leg of the flight was not bad at all; the ladies and gents from Gulf Air served up some rather fine nosh including lamb braised in horse radish and a particularly nice dry red wine. With only just over 6 ... read more
