North to Alaska – Day 1 We started our day early, to get to the airport for a 5:40AM boarding. Of course, thinking the lines would be short, that early, was my first mistake. The second mistake was thinking the TSA Pre line would be shorter than the regular screening line. We made it to the gate shortly after the boarding began, and were able to board when our rows were called. Feeling rushed, it was a great feeling to get seated and wait for the trip to begin. We took off late, but made it to Seattle 20 minutes early, made the next flight with no “rush” mode setting in. Both flights were on Alaska Airlines, which still have a nice seat spacing, where my knees are not against the seat in front of me, ... read more

Day 7 is Amsterdam. We left the ship at 8:00 to begin a walking tour and canal tour of Amsterdam. I did not realize that Amsterdam was a canal city. Of course it does not have the canals that Venice does. Some of Amsterdam is built on ground, and some of it is built on reclaimed ocean land for expanding useful land space. Because some of the land is not sufficient for a foundation, they used logs for piers beneath the building. Well, some worked, and some didn’t. There are buildings that lean left, or right, or even out over the sidewalk. The problem is if the house is leaning, you can stop the lean, but can’t fix it. So, spending a chunk of change, and you just get a kitchen, bedroom, all rooms, still leaning. ... read more

Cologne. We docked overnight, but we knew in the morning around 5:30AM that we were in a big city, when an ambulance siren broke the silence. Today is a day of walking tour, and free time. After breakfast, we left the boat at 9:00 to walk around the square, of the Cathedral. This is one of Germany’s oldest cities, and was pretty much destroyed during the second world war. The Cathedral has a little damage, but the area beside it wasn’t so fortunate. The time to return to the ship was lunch. We had lunch on board, and cast off for Amsterdam. That is our final city, and the tour of the Romantic River Rhine will be history tomorrow night (Wednesday). We are having the farewell dinner tonight, since tomorrow night is not working well with ... read more

Europe » Germany » Rhineland-Palatinate » Koblenz June 6th 2016

This morning was greeted by dry, cool temperatures, 59F-62F, which pretty much makes you rethink your outfit for the day. Cargo shorts and short sleeve is not a wise choice. The reason being, is today we cast off, and go through the Romantic Rhine Gorge. Such great scenery, that I was planning to be on the sky deck, so I could see well, and take pictures without a window, or weather / ship radar mast in all the photos, off the bow of the ship. We had a wind of 15-20 knots, it was chilly, and I got my jacket. The breakfast was good, and we shoved off, and began the journey through the Rhine Gorge. This is one trip to Germany/Europe where I can say I saw more castles than cathedrals. There were 35 castles ... read more

Today we see two cities, two docks, and enjoy the quite of Sunday morning in Germany. We docked in Mainz, last night, and this morning, we arose, ate breakfast on the ship, and began the walking tour of Mainz. As you may or may not know, Mainz is where Gutenberg began using his invention – the printing press. Before moveable type, people copied books, by hand. They did have printing before by putting the image on wooden blocks, but you can imagine not having a backspace or delete key when you make a mistake, just recarve the entire block. With the ability to make the type, and reuse it, printing a page was so much easier, and the type was able to be reset on another page. Johannes Gutenberg was a nobody, and while there are ... read more

Europe » Germany » Baden-Württemberg » Heidelberg June 4th 2016

Today was a relaxing day in the morning. We were on the boat, docked, and after lunch, got on a bus around 1:30 to go to Heidelberg. A very nice town. It is on the Neckar River, which comes down from the step hills and merges with the Rhine. One of the bridge supports has records of the floods that occur, and with all the rain they have been having here, last Monday, the guide shows us some pictures she took, of cars that were parked on the road, with water up to the windows. Of course, we have seen that in the last months also in Houston, Austin, San Antonio and other cities in Texas. We heard about Frederick I, his teenage bride Elizabeth who was 19 when they got married. We visited the castle, ... read more

Where to begin. The day seemed like we covered much ground, but really was just in Strasbourg. Strasbourg is a unique town. Some of the people living there have had to change their nationality 4 times in their lives. These are old people. Strasbourg has been a French town now since the end of WWII. It was French, then German, then French, then German, now French. They have a river that runs around the town, not so much in the mode of San Antonio, with shops for food places. These are buildings and places that are older than the US. The Alsace region is known for its wine and grape production. Some grain was raised by the farmers before they started making wine. The Romans had a tax office there, and the town was critical in ... read more

Getting there is half the fun. Actually the title is not totally accurate, since we aren’t really on a raft like Huck was. This is a very nice boat, river barge, tourist magnet, and allows you to float (with motors) down the Rhine River, and see the beautiful country sides of Switzerland, France, Germany, and Holland. We met our travel partners in the parking lot, and were glad we got there early so as to miss some of the TSA wait time that we factored into our journey. We left Houston as the rain was coming in. (Oh, did you know we have gotten a lot of rain lately?) We left as it was starting to rain. The day started with a very pleasant surprise at the airport. When we got in line for the TSA ... read more

The end of our tour, and the beginning of our trip home. This is the last day in our Best of Italy Tour. Of course, ending in Switzerland technically isn't Italy, but the border has been very dynamic over the centuries, and it used to be at one time. Today was a free day for everyone. Some chose to take a train ride up into a quaint little village, and return. Others chose to hang around town, walk some more, shop some more, eat some more, walk still some more, and return to the hotel. For most of us who are not hanging around for the 'extended' version of the trip, are heading home tomorrow. So, while there is a Day 13, it is on a plane, starting at 6AM and as far as I can ... read more
