Our first place to explore in Alaska was the Alaska Native Heritage Center. There was a loop trail around a pond where there were examples of different tribal homes. Inside of each was someone representing the people who would have lived there and explaining there lifestyle.... read more

We have returned from China and are actually now in Alaska! I decided to post one last bunch of pics from China before moving on to the Alaska pics! Before leaving China, we took Leah back to the Tea House where Jim had taken me for my birthday. We sat in the main part, at an upper level table where we could look over most of the tea house. It was great, we just relaxed and chatted. Leah walked around and took some pictures, but many turned out dark. We even got to see the bird that says "nie hao."... read more

Meet Haibao (Hi-bow -rhymes with cow). We have been seeing him just about everywhere we go - statues, signs, flags, banners, plush toys, keychains, etc for sale - he has definitely overrun the Shanghai area of China! Plus, every time we look out our front window towards Ace, he's on the billboard we see! We've seen him from one inch high to probably ten feet high! We read online that their was a stir when he was first introduced because someone said they copied him from Gumby. The Expo will run from May 1 thru Oct 31 of 2010. The following is quoted from the official Expo page : The Name -- Hai Bao The name of the mascot of World Expo 2010 Shanghai China is Hai Bao, which means the treasure of the sea. The ... read more

This past weekend, we went back to Guhua Park (which I wrote about earlier) both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday, we caught a cab, showed the taxi driver a picture of the park sign from when we were there before and it worked - we got there! We first had lunch at the restaurant next to the park, which we now know is called U.N.D.C. Coffee in English. After lunch, we walked through some areas of the park where we hadn’t been before and then went to the amusement park area. Jim and Leah went on some rides, then we walked a little more until we realized that the park was closing (at 4:30). A security guard led us to the exit because we weren’t sure how to get out from where we were! We walked a ... read more

Thanks to all of you who sent me birthday wishes - early, late or on time! It does get confusing sometimes trying to remember the time difference! My actual birthday was a pretty plain day - Sammy took Leah and I to the grocery store, but Jim had a customer in from Germany, so he didn't come home for lunch or dinner! We saw him for about half an hour before he left to go out to dinner. After returning from dinner, he had a conference call to the US, so Leah and I watched a Scooby-Doo movie we had bought - which I couldn't even stay awake through! Friday night we celebrated my birthday. Horton picked us all up, then dropped Jim and I off for dinner and took Leah to his house to play ... read more

Xiaotang is what everyone calls a “ small” town and is just a 5-10 minute walk from where we are living. This is where the other people who live here do their shopping. King Kong, who works with Jim, and his girlfriend, Miracle, walked to Xiaotang (pronounced show -like in cow - tahng) with us one night. Once we left the Ace gates, we heard music and saw a group of people across the street. They were standing in the driveway of a Honda dealer and we were told that these were the employees of that company and they were doing their “performance” as an advertisement. They were pretty good and definitely attracting attention. King Kong said that in the 3 years he has lived there, this was the first time he ever saw them doing ... read more

June 1st is International Children's Day. Although the info I found online says that it is recognized in the USA, I have never heard of any type of celebration where I've lived - has anyone else? The people here were surprised to hear that we didn't really celebrate Children's Day in the USA, they thought it was a big, worldwide celebration! It seems to be a very big day here in China. Leah and I were invited to join in the celebration at a local elementary school in Nanqiao. I don't know the name of the school where we were, but it is over 200 years old, and supposedly the best in Nanqiao. The school was made up of a number of different buildings, a smaller courtyard area and a large open area, all kind of ... read more

After visiting the aquarium, we walked next door to the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. This is an unusual looking building, actually older than many now standing as it was built in 1994. There is a history museum in the basement, a restaurant part way up and an observation floor at the top, but we decided to continue on to the other towers with observation floors. We ended up walking through more construction walls to get there, one area had some food vendors and a man playing an old Chinese instrument. The two tallest towers in Shanghai are right next to each other. We decided to go up into the Jinmao Tower (pronounced Jinmow) which is 1,379 feet high and the observation deck is on the 88th floor. It was amazing how fast the elevator got us ... read more

After reading about the attractions in Shanghai, I asked Leah what she wanted to do most and she chose the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium, so that's where we headed to first on Friday. It was the nicest aquarium I've ever been to, but the one in Kentucky, just across from Cinncinnati is close to it. There were many unusual creatures that I won't be able to name in the pictures, but there were also many familiar exhibits. The exhibits were set up in sections according to world zones: China, South America, Australia, Africa, Southeast Asia, Cold water, Polar, Sea & Shore and Deep Oceans. There were seals and penguins in large exhibits and what we all enjoyed most were the tunnels, especially the one with the sharks, sea turtles and rays. There was even a tunnel around ... read more

We spent May 28, 29 and 30th in Shanghai. We chose to stay at the Ramada Plaza Hotel from reviews in a guidebook and online and were very pleased with the choice. It is not actually part of the US Ramada chain any longer and is actually much nicer than US Ramadas. It was located right on Nanjing Road, which is the big "walking street" or pedestrian mall of Shanghai. We were one block from Renmin or People's Square and Park and about a mile from the Bund. The first day there, we just kind of wandered, we had planned to see the famous Shanghai Acrobat Show, but it turned out they weren't performing at the Theatre we walked to because of the holiday. We had fun exploring a music/movie store and then walked to the ... read more
