On Thursday, June 3rd, we went to the Shanghai World Expo for the first time. I don't recall seeing anywhere exactly how much area it covers, but it is big! There are 5 main areas, and we chose to start in area C, which has the Americas, Africa and Europe. After purchasing our tickets and getting through security, we just wandered a little to get an idea of what was around where we were. Neither one of us felt like standing in any lines for hours, so we only went in the pavillions with short or no lines. We were both just enjoying looking at the outsides of the pavillions from a distance, then getting up close to see what they were actually made of. The one we both enjoyed the outside of best was the ... read more

On Saturday, May 29, we visited the Shanghai Botanical Garden. When we first entered the gate, I was drawn toward a forested area where I could hear birds singing very loudly. It turned out that there were cages hanging from the trees everywhere you looked! I found this on the internet about the birds : "The Huamei is a case in point. A thrush-sized bird, it is remarkable for two things: its head markings, which look like a painted eyebrow (huamei means just that) and its beautiful singing voice. It is one of the iconic birds of China. However, when googling “huamei” and trying to find a reference page about it, no references can be found in the first 40 page entries. Nearly all the rest are given over to a huge assortment of Chinese factories ... read more

From March 11th thru March 14th, we took a trip to Hong Kong. WE stayed at the Harbour Metropolis Hotel in Kowloon. From our room, we could look across Victoria Harbor to Hong Kong Island. Well, at least the first night we could, after that it was so foggy that we couldn't see the other side! We arrived kind of late Thursday night, so we just walked into the adjoining Metropolis Mall and had dinner. On Friday, after awakening to fog, we decided to go to Stanley in hopes that the fog would be gone on Saturday to go to the Peak. We took a taxi to Stanley, an old fishing village on the opposite side of Hong Kong Island. On the way, we passed a city called Repulse Bay. We had been told to watch ... read more

The Chinese New Year began on February 14, 2010. We learned that the Chinese LOVE fireworks! And obviously can easily buy them! We were amazed at the sheer volume of fireworks going off constantly. We were able to watch out either of our apartment windows and see a show. On Chinese New Years morning, we woke up to a covering of snow on the ground! On the fourth day of the New Year, we went to stay for a few days in the Xujiahui area of Shanghai. The best I can tell you how to pronounce "Xujiahui" is shoo-jee-ah-way, but I'm sure you won't ending up saying it anywhere close to how the Chinese say it! We stayed in the Courtyard Marriott where we were in easy walking distance of all the big shopping malls - ... read more

On Sunday, November 8th, we went to the Museum of Science and Technology in Shanghai. Overall, I was impressed by the size of this museum. It had an extremely large variety of exhibits which were mostly marked well in English. The building itself was what impressed me the most. The central area is a large geodesic dome. There are also 4 different types of movie theatres - Imax Dome, 3-D Imax, 4-D and Space Theatre, unfortunately, the movies were only in Chinese, so we didn't go to any. There were many areas that we didn't have time to see or went through quickly. The first area we entered was the Animals World, taxidermied displays separated by continent. There was a large amount, and although they were quite close together, they had some interesting poses of ... read more

The Super Brand Mall is definitely bigger than any mall I've ever been to! Now for those of you who know me well, I'm not really much of a shopper, so that doesn't say a lot, but, it is 10 stories high and even has an ice skating rink on the 8th floor! The Chinese call it Zhengda Guangchang. After almost 2 hrs traveling time - a taxi to the metro station nearest our apt, then 3 different metro lines, and a walk across a huge street - with everything we needed for the weekend in our backpacks, we arrived at the mall! This was our first "solo" travel other than by taxi, so we were glad we made it successfully! The Shanghai Metro System is very clearly marked and I had an English metro map ... read more

We went with some friends to the Shanghai Zoo on Halloween, Saturday, October 31st. I told Leah that since she couldn't go trick or treating this year that maybe the animals would do some tricks for her ; -) - which some did! and she got a couple treats - a stuffed panda and an ice cream bar! We rode what they call the "subway" (not like our subways) for the first time - it's actually elevated, not below ground! We had to take 2 taxis to the train station because they are pretty strict about only 4 passengers in a taxi and there were 6 of us. The subway wasn't bad to ride, we had to stand the first part, then after we switched to a different line, we were able to get seats. We're ... read more

Finally, after having spent about 9 weeks total time in China, we got to go to the ocean! It really was close like Jim said! We left after lunch on Saturday and took a taxi. I timed it and we got there in 22 minutes! It cost us 57RMB, or a little over $7USD to get there. We had reservations at the Howard Johnson's Palm Beach Resort, where Jim stayed on his first trip here. After checking in, we headed out to explore! We started out at the Long Teng Pavilion, which is a newer temple, but we figured we could get a nice view of the area, which we did. We just went to the area at the base before you enter the pavilion. It turns out that this is where the Chinese Opera Costume ... read more

Jim has had to work 8 days straight after the Chinese Holiday, so we have just done some local things. The last day of his vacation time, we went out with a couple of new friends, Julie and Tina. We went to Guhua Park, which I have written about a couple of times before. Leah wanted to go back and rent a boat. This time, Julie and Tina sat in the front with Leah while Jim and I "relaxed" in the back - actually, we didn relax a lot! It was quite crowded being a holiday, and Leah kept running into things, but it was fun! Then we went to the amusement area and only had time to ride the bumper cars before it closed. Julie and Tina had never done this before and we managed ... read more

This will be the last entry for our stay in Suzhou. After our visit to The Lingering Garden, we had planned to go to the Suzhou Museum, but upon arrival found an extremely long line, which wasn't even moving, and we decided to just go back to Jin Ji Lake. We went back to Zapata's and this time got to sit on the outdoor balcony since it wasn't crowded. While looking around from the balcony, I saw another wading type area around the side where we hadn't gone before, so we went to check that out after lunch. I think the area is called the water garden area. It had four wading pools, each with a row of large boulders. Behind the pools was a nice shaded, grassy area where many people were relaxing. Leah enjoyed ... read more
