On the cusp! Firstly, don't shoot the messenger, though as an economics/geography teacher, I am contractually obligated to comment. Back when these terms were first coined during the Cold War "First World" referred to 'us', or the Capitalists; Second World referred to those with planned economies, or the Communists; and Third World referred to those who were non-aligned. Of course, with time "Third World" became synonymous with poor and First World with rich. Though Second World was always the Eastern Bloc. These days the terms "developed" and "developing" are more widely used, though even then this assumes that everyone is pursuing a path to 'development,' yet still certain former Soviet Bloc countries would continue to insist they were pursuing their own track and are therefore not 'behind', or playing 'catch up', at all. On a separate note, every time I buy a new camera my photographs drop from First to Third World, without passing Second.

Nice to be back. Great to hear you guys are still out there and tuning in. I actually had a stint writing for a few magazines in the interim. Problem is the money is miserable and 95% of the work has nothing to do with writing. So much more palatable being your own editor and not having to please anybody but yourself. Thanks for reading. The images are from Penny but she's having some teething issues with her new Xmas gift.

Love the juxtapositions (always my fave)! How great that there's something for everyone! I hope the wild, crusty streets of Jalan Alor never disappear though a proper sewage system is always a plus. Glad that Melacca's charm remained intact under the upgrades though I'm sure lots of Chinese who roots go back generations have been displaced--ah, that sweet/sour gentrification. On the other hand, though I poo-poo the upscale, commercial malls, I can imagine heading there for a film in an air-conditioned theater some hot day. And I'm thrilled that even poor people can drink the water, even if it's too-chlorinated for some tastes. Excellent photos!
Hi Tara Long time no hear. But then it's long time no publish an entry. Lovely to see you are still tuning in. Thanks for taking the time to read, really appreciate it.
Thanks very much Thanks for the compliment, really appreciate it. I'm probably being out of order here but I've prostituted myself and have begun my own blog site. If you have 5 spare minutes, would you be able to check into www.thegreyglobe.com
There's already one small piece on Zurkaneh in Iran. Thanks for reading and keep in touch.

Oh, so glad we just turned 60! Am hoping this doesn't put us in that nearly dead category yet! Was glad to read your blog as I usually relate well to your sense of humour and insight. Just a bit worried about that pre-heaven vision!! Off for a week for a joint birthday present. Promise to let you know how it went, have been very dilatory with updating our final trips of last year.
Hi Meryl Glad to hear you are still up and about. we are stuck at home for a while yet but then home isn't such a bad option. If you get bored, check out my photo library on

Enjoy the week away and happy birthday.
Somehow I missed this last blog... as I have been following your entire journey which has been fantastic. You can always do China once you get your new passports...not that far from Oz. Anyway, it's been a great ride. I look forward to your next adventure.
Thanks again Thanks for tuning for so long. back in the real world now for a couple of months. I hope you get your hundred nations up in the near future. I'll keep watching your space.
What is this I m turkish and the pictures and the discribing reminds me of what happened to turkey when they filmed midnightexpress ....
I live in istanbul and i never been to iran but i do not think it is as you discribed ,what is your reason to put animals picture ? is that the on ly think that you sore or what?
Sorry you didn't like it. I think maybe you misunderstood the crux of my story. I was very flattering of Iran, surely one of the more fascinating nations on the planet. If you read the other comments, pretty much everybody thought I presented Iran in a very positive light. As for the animal photos, they tie in with one of the stories I wrote on Tasua. By the way, I love your country which is an example of how a primarily Islamic country can function effectively through tolerance. I did a blog on Istanbul a few blogs prior to the one on Iran.
Hi again, Thanks for all good advice! It helps a lot!!!
Today evening we are flying to Iran. Your pictures in my mind- so I hope, I will shoot also nice.

Gary and Penny, from the beginning... Again. Round the world for a year in 07 and we've decided it's time once more. So packing up the house, the jobs, selling the cars and up up and away, this time with no return ticket and no fixed itinerary. A smidgin reckless, sure, but what the hell. May as well indulge in a few passions before the last great journey in who knows when.
Stay tuned and please stay in contact, cause whilst we love seeing what the rest of the world has to offer, we also love receiving news from home base.... full info
