I'm heading to summer school in Valparaiso, Chile. I'll be living in Vina del Mar with a host family, and then backpacking once classes are over!

We just got back from a great weekend trip today. We were trying to leave on Wednesday but we encountered several problems with travel and basically with lots of luck were able to leave on Thursday night. On Wednesday night I went out with my host sister Lya and Liz to her friend’s house then to a discoteca—apparently she knows people because we got VIP passes and just cut an extremely long line. It was really fun and an extremely late night. Woke up the next morning and had a little breakfast then went on an awesome bike ride along the bike path that hugs the cliffs (really similar to cliff walk in Newport but instead of mansions skyscrapers). On Sunday we went to the hill where Santiago, el cello de San Lucia (Gorgeous palace on a huge cliff!!), was founded and also to a wealthy artisan market, el Mercado de los Dominicanos. Everyone else was asleep but I could not peel my eyes away from the gorgeous vineyards and gigantic mountains…and my ears wouldn’t stop popping. When we got to Valparaíso immediately we got off the bus and met our families. My Chilean parents and sister were there and they were so warm and ... read more

On the way down I had a layover in Lima Peru which is about the nicest airport I have ever been in. Absolutely nobody spoke English but it was about 4am so I wasn't too concerned with that since a majority of the signs were English and Spanish and you could actually pay with U.S. dollars. This was all not the case at all once you get into Santiago. In Santiago everything is only in Spanish and you certainly cannot use U.S. dollars other then to pay for your 131$ entry fee into the country which you must have in cash. What they don't tell you is ... read more
