I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from the Bay Islands of Honduras!! I'm still in the Bay Islands getting certified for scuba diving. I'm feeling a little sick, and there is a whole chapter of the scuba diving book that basically says not to dive when your sick (mostly because of congestion making it difficult to equalize underwater) but I'm not feeling that bad, and I'm not congested at all...so I'm just going to go for it (don't worry mom, I won't push it). Yesterday I was in the classroom for 8 hours, today is the pool, and then the next to days are open water diving (and then off to Guatemala)...nothing much more to report. I did meet another traveler from the states basically doing the same thing as me(but going in the ... read more

So I left the beautiful islands of Majagual, and hoped on a bus to Granada. I stayed at a really fun hostel and met a group of people that where all going to the lake islands of Ometephe, Nicaragua the next morning. So I explored the city, and then hit the bars/clubs that night. For some reason I still cannot dance in the Latin style….so I revert to my hip hop roots…which might look funny to everyone else since they are doing the salsa or whatever…but I’m having fun so who cares. Granada was a really nice city, and I probably should have hung around longer, but I have heard so much about Ometephe, I figured I’d keep on moving So the next morning I hop on a bus to the ferry with 3 other people ... read more

Well I am back from a few days at the nicest beach I have ever been too. I stayed at a place called “Camping Melinda” which is run by a middle age lady named Melinda and her husband. As you saw in the pictures from last week, it is just a few rooms and then a bunch of tents. You can get a room for $15 a night, a tent for $4 a night, or sling a hammock for $3. The first night I stayed in one of the tents and the pad that they provided smelled like bad B.O. So I was tossing and turning all night, and ended up getting up before the sun (once again) and slept on the beach (which was actually pretty nice save the sand in the scalp thing). And ... read more

I spent one night in a town called San Juan del Sor...pretty disapointing, but then the next morning I took a boat taxi to another beach called Majagual. ABSOLUTLY AMAZING, totally secluded white sand beach...hardly anyone there..palm trees, nice surfing, the works. So I’m hiking down the beach looking for a place to say and I come across this place called Camping Malida (the only house on the beach for as far as the eye can see). And basically it is a little camp area with tents to rent and hammock space. There are about 12 other people there so I find a spot and move in. Only to learn that the closest internet is in the town 1 hour away, and the only store is the one you see a pic of. So I got ... read more

Right now I am sitting in an internet café in the small Costa Rican town of LaFortuna (north western part of the country) . I am going to spend a few days here and then head to Nicaragua. The town itself is in the shadow of a huge volcano (see pics...) it is actually quit beautiful here. I have taken 2 long bus rides to get back up to this part of the country...and i am going to have to take a lot more of these long bus rides (with no leg room) before I get up to Guatamala. A few times during the ride we came across traffic. Traffic here is a little different then back at home. There are not that many roads so when there is traffic...THERE IS TRAFFIC. I had no idea ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama December 7th 2004

So today was another rainy day and I didn´t really do much of anything until I heard a group of people talking about going surfing..so I joined them. So a little boat picks us up (4 of us...2 good surfers, and then myself, and another girl who was just learning) around 4pm. As we are driving to the drop-off point and it begins to pour...but no one seems to be discouraged so I just roll with it (but start to get a little worried). On the way there I also learn that there is a coral bottom (apposed to sand) so I need to be careful. I had imagined that the boat was going to drop us off at some nice beach...but boy was I mistaken. We get dropped off a good ways off of the ... read more

HOLAS AMIGOS, So early this morning I caught a bus to the Panama border, then a taxi to the marina (which is actually just a tiny dock in the back of someones house), and then a boat to the island of Bocas del Toro (which is off the north eastern coast of Panama). I settled into a really cool looking hostel and am ready to start a new adventure in a new city/country. But first I will recap the time I spent in the city of Puerto Viejo (south eastern Costa Rica). I spent Thursday through Monday (morning) at the some what hippy beach town of Puerto Viejo. I was pretty excited to finally get to the Costa Rica that I had imagined...palm tree beaches, surfers, and wildlife. My days there where pretty lazy...save a few ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica December 1st 2004

Random observation: (1) There are no addresses here. No house numbers, no street names/signs, nothing like that. All directions are give by landmarks and meters (one block equals 50 or 100 meters…depending). That also means that no one gets mail delivered, everyone picks it up at the post office. (2) Fast food such as KFC cost more then a meal at a nice sit-down restaurant. Kind of crazy. So yesterday I had an amazing time white water rafting…it was like nothing I had ever seen before in our area (New River). Jeff, correct me if I am wrong, but I think that Costa Rica is one of the top white water rafting areas in the world. Regardless, my trip yesterday was pretty intense. I met up with the group at about 7 in the morning (I ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica November 29th 2004

Hey everyone! Right now I am in Turrialba, Costa Rica (which is inbetween San Jose and Limon) and it is basically a kayaking and whitewater rafting base camp. But I will give you a quick review from where I left off. Actually first let me make a few random comments. (1) As everyone knows, I basically know no spanish what so ever. but occasionally I am able to piece a phrase together and ask a local a simple question (such as ¨Donde esta la autobus para Turrialba¨). And on those rara occasions when I do get it right...boy o boy I feel like such the savy internation traveller (reguardless of the fact that I have know idea what they say in reply). On top of that, I am EXCELENTE with spanglish sign language. I have gotten ... read more

Well I have made it...right now it is 6:45 in the morning (why did I get up so early...i think I might have to invest in a watch...although, you all know I couldn't sleep in anyway). I am at a hostel in San Pedro (San Jose) Costa Rica. So I only have one thing to report so far. While sitting at Dullus airport I ment an older group of people (in there 40's) who are all rafters and kayakers (bye the way....I'm screwed without a spell checker). So I made friends, and end up getting invited to meet them in some town called Turrialba for some white water rafting..aparently on of the guys has some room on his raft (which he actually brought as luggage). I am definitely going to try to met up with them ... read more
