After delaying our departure by one day due to bad weather, we left Orcas Island at 10:30am under partly cloudy skies and 5 knots of wind from the SE. We checked into Canadian customs using our Nexus pass which allows us to call in rather than going to a specific customs dock. This was complicated only by the fact that we were declaring the wine we brought aboard for our trip. We ultimately paid a 125% tax on the wine. Protectionism is alive and well even with NAFTA. Ganges, on Salt Spring Island, is a favorite stop on any trip. But since it has a good grocery store, it was a very necessary stop for us to pick up items that may not be brought in from the US.
