Backpacking in Guatemala
Hello, We flew into Guatemala Airport as well and then took a shuttle immediately to Antigua, which is the safest area to be in. We are taking spanish school (Don Pedro in Antigua) and so we are staying with a Guatemalan family, where we eat our meals and sleep. We are taking spanish lessons 5 hours a day (you can do between 4 and 7) 5 days a week so that we learn to communicate better and then you have the afternoons and weekends free. There are tons of travel agencies in Antigua that you can plan day or weekend trips with and our school also arranges for several tours that are very inexpensive. We recommend visiting Monterrico and doing the Pacaya Volcano hike in the morning. Hope this helps! Lindsay

My boyfriend and I bought tickets to guatamala city and we are planning on backpacking around the area for about three weeks, I keep hearing about bad news with tourists and robberies and found your blog to be very optimistic. Can you give any advice to us on where we might find safe spots or if you have had any troubnle? Thanks! your trip sounds great! -elise and tucker
