We drove back to Bratislava but took a detour to Bojnice to see the Zamok Bojnice. Zamok is not a castle for the royals, but more for the noble people. We didn't take the castle tour, but were contented with enjoying a stroll around the area. Back in Bratislava, we went to the Slovak Pub for dinner (Halušky!!!) then to Stur for dessert (AGAIN).... read more

The drive from Bratislava to Slovensky Raj took around 3 hours. Slovensky Raj means the paradise of Slovakia, in my opinion, a very apt name. We stayed in a small village called Vernar. It is only popular during ski season, so when we arrived, we were the only occupants of the hostel. From there we drove to Sucha Bela to hike. It took us approximately 4 hours to get back to our car. As there were very few hikers, it was very peaceful and serene. We were lucky enough to see a Kamzi (mountain goat) cross our paths. I only managed to get a blur photo of it as it happened too fast. As if the kamzi heard my thoughts, it sneaked back to where we were and stood still, staring at us curiously and giving ... read more

Drove to Devin Castle, half an hour away from the city centre. From there, we saw the Danube River and the point where Danube and Morava River joined together. The view was spectacular, but then again, I've been saying that everywhere I've been so far. There, we also saw a monument of the Iron Curtain. We drove back to the city and parked in a shopping centre. From there, we crossed a bridge, which had the UFO on top. UFO is a tower built on top of the bridge during the communist era and is now home to a very expensive restaurant. We walked past the university building of Bratislava and after a few turns, arrived at St. Elizabeth, also known as the little blue church. It is hidden in the middle of the city, even ... read more

We took a bus to Bratislava and was met by a friend who stays there. She brought us to Bratislava Castle to admire the view of the city. On the way, we saw many graffitis adorning the walls of highways. These beautiful form of expressions looked more like art than acts of vandalisms. We made our way back to the town centre and walked past the opera house. It started to drizzle so we decided to join my friend's friends in a cute cafe/bookshop. As usual, dessert was amazing. We chilled there for a while before going to a burger shop (as stated below it's name - since 2013). They only served 2 different burgers: veggie or non veggie. Unexpectedly (come on, 'since 2013' isn't really convincing me of its reputation) the burger was yummy. We ... read more

Europe » Czech Republic » Olomouc Region » Olomouc April 9th 2014

We took a morning train to Olomouc, a university town. For some reason, the train carriages reminded me of the train in Harry Potter, which made me giddy with excitement (Yes, I still believe that one day, I shall receive my acceptance letter). When we reached Olomouc, we realised that barely anyone spoke English and we needed to get to the town centre (oh the joys of travelling). Luckily for us, a kind Samaritan with fluent English approached us and offered to bring us to our hostel. We stayed in the Poet's Corner, a nice cosy hostel just minutes away from the town centre. The owner gave us a brief overview of what we should see and eat. It was well into the afternoon and so we set off to St. Wenceslas' Cathedral, afraid that we ... read more

Still in Prague. We walked all the way to Vyšehrad, passing through Wenceslas Square. It was bustling with tourist and had some sort demonstration going on. We visited the National Museum, which took us through the economic history of Czech Republic and other countries. The exhibitions were housed in a separate building from the National Museum itself as the building was undergoing reconstruction, which was unfortunate. Vyšehrad means citadel. It is said to be the place of origin of Prague. We strolled around the area, admiring the view of the city. We also visited St. Peter and Paul, another beautifully decorated cathedral. There is a cemetery beside the church, home to many famous Czech musicians. We made our way back to the old town, walking along the river bank. Reaching the town centre, we went into ... read more

Taking advantage of the amazing weather, we walked to Prague Castle. We took a stroll along the castle gardens before going into the castle itself. There we saw St. Vitus Cathedral, a beautiful church both outside and in. From there, we slowly made our way to the Old Royal Palace, Basilica of St. George and the famous Golden lane. The houses along the Golden Lane were quaint and small, depicting life back in the olden days. Just as we were leaving the castle, I realised my jacket pocket was unbuttoned and that my phone had gone missing. So much for constant vigilance. TIP: Getting carried away with taking pictures in a crowded area is not a good idea. After a half hearted attempt to find my phone, we left the castle with me trying not to ... read more

Arrived in Prague Airport in the afternoon and took an Airport Express bus to the city centre. It's always fun to get lost for the first half an hour looking for the hostel. I wasted a large amount of credit calling the hostel for directions, which later turned out to be a blessing in disguise. After a frustrating search, we finally found the hostel and settled into our rooms. After a brief look over of the map, we decided to make our way to the town centre. We walked there, with me snapping pictures like a typical tourist at everything that was anything. We past the municipal hall and the powder tower, which had me in awe with its grand facade. We were momentarily delayed when we saw an amazing performance from a street busker. (Check ... read more
