Mount Fuji (?) **************************************** My notes for 28 Feb 2009 (Optional Fuji Five Lakes Tour) Visit “Fuji five lakes area” i.e. Kawaguchiko and Saiko from Tokyo by taking a bus ride. Ride the ropeway to Mount Tenjo for views of Fuji. ********************************************* Mount Fuji is one of the three Sacred Mountains of Japan and is reverentially referred to as “Fuji-san” by the Japanese. This perfectly-shaped, snow-covered, volcanic cone has influenced Japanese literature, paintings, ceramics, Kimonos for centuries, so much so that it has become now a symbol of Japan. No wonder that I was hankering for a glimpse of it. Ever since we had come to Tokyo from Kyoto, the days had been cloudy and rainy and there was not a chance that we would see Mount Fuji even if we go to Hakone or Fuji ... read more

Departmental Stores Mitsukoshi and Daimaru, Tokyo ******************************************* For 27th Feb. my notes consist of the following line : Visit Kamakura (Might see Fuji if you are lucky i.e. depending upon clear weather.) ************************************************* The weather was beastly that day. When we left our hotel that day, it was already snowing. The one-square-millimeter snowflakes soon turned into one-square-centimeter snowflakes. It was windy and chilly. You won't find any photos in this blog. Avi is quite fond of taking photos but the awful weather prevented him from taking out the camera from the bag. The previous night we had discussed whether we should be visiting Kamakura the next day. To be truthful, I did not think we will find Kamakura very attractive after visiting the Nikko shrines. I actually had had enough of shrines and large Buddha... read more

Nikko ******************************************* This must be the shortest entry in my notes for 26 Feb. It, apart from the printout of train timetables, consists of a single word : Nikko ******************************************* This was the last day of our 7-day JR pass and I wanted to use it to the maximum extent, so even though going to Nikko by Tobu railways would have been much more direct and simpler, we decided to follow the Tokyo-Utsunomiya-Nikko route. We already had the reservations. Nikko is up in the hills so it is colder than Tokyo. We dressed accordingly. Somewhere in my reading I had come across this tidbit: There is a proverb in Japanese “Do not say ‘kekko’ (a spontaneous ‘Beautiful!’) till you have seen Nikko”. So, naturally, our expectations about Nikko were quite high. I am happy to report ... read more

Himeji Castle, Himeji *************************************************** My notes for 25th Feb, consist of the following : 1) Check out of the hotel and come to Kyoto station 2) Put the luggage in the station locker. 3) Take the train to Nara 4) See Todaiji Temple and Park 5) Come back to Kyoto for luggage. 6) Travel to Tokyo on JR Pass (Might see Fuji on left if you are lucky) 7) Take a taxi to the hotel *************************************************** However, we already had visited Nara the previous day and had also decided by now that we will be visiting the Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Western Kyoto and enjoy the tea-ceremony with the Geishas in a grove of flowering plum trees and also shop at the flea-market. The idea of spending ... read more

Todaiji Temple, Nara Park, Nara ************************************************* My notes for 24th Feb. has this entry : Show Avinash the highlights of Kyoto - Kinkakuji, Nijo Castle, Sanjusangendo, Kiyomizudera. ************************************************* All this sightseeing was already over and today Avinash had only a half-day session at the conference. That meant that we could squeeze in half a day’s sightseeing yet. We decided to go to Nara in the afternoon. In the morning, while Avi was in the conference, I walked to the nearby Heian shrine and then further to the Handicrafts center and bought a Polyester kimono. I preferred the polyester material because it resembles silk but can be washed at home. Silk needs dry-cleaning. Cotton kimonos would have been alright for Mumbai weather but the fabric was thick and heavy and costs almost as much as a silk ... read more

Yasaka Shrine, Chionin Temple, Sanjusangendo temple and Kiyomuzudera Shrine ************************************************ My note for 23 Feb. also consists of a single line : “Charu does the Kyoto sightseeing on her own”. ************************************************ The day was cloudy and rainy, I mean drizzly. In our experience, it does not rain like the Mumbai monsoon downpour in Japan. Of course, our experience is limited to the days between 19 Feb and 2nd March. After the breakfast, Avi went for his conference and I took the shuttle to Yasaka shrine in the Gion area. Gion is a very “interesting” area, though, as I walked down the shop-lined road to the Yasaka Shrine, I was unaware of its significance. All I was looking for were the kimono shops and there are a quite a few kimono shops on the street. However, the ... read more

Fushimi Inari Shrine, Inari ******************************************** My notes for 22 Feb. consist of a single line : “Charu does the Kyoto sightseeing on her own (Familiarizing)”. ******************************************** I had expected that to travel alone in a strange city, I would require at least one day of roaming around the nearby area of the hotel but the previous day’s travel had emboldened me and so I decided to go to Fushimi Inari on my own. However, to reach Fushimi Inari, I needed to go to the Kyoto station first, from where I could take the JR train to Fushimi Inari. That day, at breakfast, we met with a lot of people from all over the Globe - from Hong Kong, Philippines, Pakistan, USA -- but I believe the Indian contingent was the largest. There were people from Mumbai, ... read more

Nikko Hotel, Kansai Airport, Osaka *********************************************** For 19th Feb, when our Korean flight actually landed at Osaka’s International airport, I find this entry in my notes: 19-Feb-2009 Mumbai-Osaka flight (Korean) arriving at 8:55 PM Stay the night in Airport hotel Nikko because ALL TRANSPORT IN JAPAN COMES TO A STANDSTILL AT 23:00 AT THE LATEST. *********************************************** (Airport code of Osaka airport is KIX and I remember it because it gave us quite a kick to realize that the airport is an artificial island in the Osaka Bay made specifically for this purpose.) This nugget of wisdom did not come very easily to me. It came AFTER we had booked a ‘budget’ hotel for the night at Shin-Osaka, an hour’s drive away from the airport, taking it for granted that an International Airport like the Osaka Airport ... read more
