R: Yesterday was quite a dull day. We spent most of it in a mini van on the Icefields parkway, heading for Jasper. We started with Schnitzels in Banff before we headed off, served in the "traditional style", with Anchovies and Capers. Now, I'm not a schnitzel expert but it didn't sound right. We spent 4 hours on the bus driving through incredible Icefields scenery (an Icefield consists of multiple glaciers). Sadly the cloud level was so low that you got the impression of magnificent scenery around you, but no actual views. It's snowed pretty heavily while we were on the way - I was pretty glad I wasn't doing the driving at times. We've ended up in a small B&B that seems to be run by Welsh people called the Williams, also given the number ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff National Park November 12th 2015

R: Today is Remembrance Day in Canada and across the world, but in most of Canada it is a public holiday, not that we noticed it much in Banff, being a tourist town. It was a bit surreal to see the British national anthem being played at the Cenotaph in Ottawa on the TV and made us think about Canada's role in British history. There are union jacks flying in Banff. We went to see the military parade in town at 11.30 which was quite small, but consisted of present and past military officers, police (Canadian Mounties from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police), fire service and cadets. It was over pretty quick but Banff isn't a big place. Cate found some Nerds in a shop - not that blog-worthy really - but when was the last ... read more

C: We've been in Banff for 3 days now and are really enjoying it. Yesterday we made a second attempt to drive up to Lake Louise - success! The road was much better and the clouds were higher so we could see most of the mountain tops. The lake itself was very impressive, huge, and beautifully framed by the Victoria glaciers and surrounding mountains. After taking the obligatory photos and wandering round the lake for a bit we headed to the ski area where we had been told that ski lifts were available to take us up the mountain. Unlike in the Alps they were not at all prepared for the possibility that you might want to go up on the lift for sightseeing and not skiing and the man operating the chairlift looked at us ... read more

North America » Canada » Alberta » Banff November 8th 2015

R: So, we cheated a little. The bus to Banff National Park worked out to be at least 14 hours on a Greyhound bus, and cost only £20 less than a flight to Calgary, which is a 1 hour drive from Banff, our home for 5 days. So we missed out Revelstoke and headed straight for Banff. And we are glad we did. We got soaked on the way to Vancouver airport. Really soaked. And the plane felt like it might fall out of the sky as it climbed to escape the cloud. But in Calgary on the other side of the Rocky Mountains, it was clear skies and 3c. The drive up to Banff is on a big highway and you get quite a view on the last few KMs. We ended up staying in ... read more

North America » Canada » British Columbia » Vancouver November 7th 2015

C: Well we're nearing the end of our time in Vancouver and we've really enjoyed it despite the sometimes hostile weather. Yesterday, we decided some exercise was in order so we hired bikes (thanks Abbie Davis for the tip) and headed off to do the Seawall loop round the edge of the city centre and around Stanley Park, a beautiful protected peninsula to the northwest of the city. Vancouver is well set up for cycling and so after just 5 mins of slightly scary city roads we were on a great dedicated cycle track running along the water's edge for the rest of the day. The park was lovely and in most of it you would have no idea you were in the middle of huge metropolis. It's almost entirely natural and very underdeveloped with just ... read more

R: So, to be clear, I'm not going to do this every day. But today is the first real day we are here. After seeing an upsetting number of Christmas trees at Heathrow, the trip out was smooth. Our Airbnb place is amazing. We are right in the downtown area of Vancouver about 2 mins walk from the Vancouver lookout tower (which Cate bought me tickets to for our anniversary). It's a whole apartment to ourselves - it has no view out, being the only snag. But so far very impressed with Airbnb. We decided to follow the walking tour in the guidebook to start, then went a bit off piste as the day unfolded. The weather is pretty dull, which is a shame because we can't see the mountain scenery around us. The city is ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Oxfordshire » Abingdon November 2nd 2015

R: So today we finished the packing and are nearly ready to go. There was just the matter of the spirits cabinet to drink up. Cate valiantly drank the gin, while I opted for something more.... Mediterrainian. Can't spell that.... We have had a great evening with friends eating our last British curry for 6 months (not to mention the great "goodbye meals" we've had with others in the last few weeks). And so to Heathrow, where I hear we have disruption awaiting us. Boo to that.... read more

So it's all about the boxes now. Turns out it might have been wise to travel before we owned a house. But hey ho, come next Tuesday all will be ready I'm sure. To those we see regularly, you'll know I've been stressing a bit recently about getting it all done. But half a bottle of red wine in tonight and I'm feeling more positive. Look out for our first proper post next week...... read more
