Patagonia!! It is the busy season now and this town was packed full of people. This town reminded me a lot of Banff. Mountains, lakes, lots of overpriced shopping, and numerous chocolatiers. There was also some strange fascination with Saint Bernard dogs. We rented a car and quickly escaped. The drive down to El Bolson was unbelievable. We stopped by a lake for a dinner of dark beer, fresh strawberries and calibrasi and cheese in a baguette. The mountains have a very sharp jagged appearance quite unique to Patagonia. Like shark teeth. That night we saw a little dirt road going down to one of the lakes and we decided to drive in to check it out. It was such a nice location that we decided to set up camp. We did make sure to camp ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires February 17th 2010

Dana and I had a few days to explore the city before his Dad arrived. We wandered the streets to take it all in. I felt like I had gone back to the early 1950s with all the old buildings and the way many people dressed. Many old men were dressed in the outfits I remember from West-Side and even some young people had old fashioned clothes. We stayed in a beautiful old hotel with huge French doors and balconies and an ancient elevator which until now I have only ever seen on TV, the ones where you have to close the door and then the gate inside. I thought this was soo cool but it also reminded me of how much technology has changed in such a short time. I absolutely loved the feeling of ... read more

Oh how nice it was to come out of the third world poverty. From the second we left the Bolivian roads (aka tire tracks in the sand), we drove onto a beautiful asphalt highway. Do you know how long it’s been since I’ve seen a real road, since I’ve seen asphalt?! And not only was it paved, but there were lines painted on it and even road signs! We were still in the middle of no-where but everything felt vastly different. Our bus driver was wearing a nicely pressed shirt instead of the filthy rags our Bolivian jeep driver wore, and he spoke clearly, and told us what we were seeing, instead of grunting annoyed answers. The people of Chile were so friendly. We made friends with so many people from old to young in the ... read more

Dana and I hired a Bolivian man to drive us through the Bolivian salt flats over 3 days. This place is one of the wonders of the world and is the most beautiful place I have ever been to. Our journey was delayed a day as I was sick with giardia. Not only does having giardia suck, but being sick alone in a foreign country far from home and comforts isn’t fun either. Neither is being sick on a 12 hour bus trip over windy gravel roads. Luckily I was able to buy anti-parasitic medication over the counter, which kicked in quickly. We have not met a single person who has been through Bolivia and not been sick. We were prepared and took precautions, but it really is inevitable. Our first stop was at a train ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Cochabamba Department » Cochabamba January 25th 2010

For this eventful day we headed to Bolivia with our new Brazilian friend, Leiga, where she had heard there was going to be a ritual to welcome the New Year. Once across the Peruvian border into Bolivia, we went took a boat to Isla Del Sol: The Island of the Sun. This island is on Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world, and is an ancient Incan place of worship, with numerous temple ruins still remaining on the island. The island is very dramatic. It rises steeply out of the water and you can hike up and over the hills to the other end in about 4-5 hours. We did this hike on our second day and we were just blown away by the beauty of the landscape, with its inviting beaches, grassy hillsides, the ... read more

South America » Peru » Arequipa » Colca Canyon January 13th 2010

Here in Arequipa is the place where they found the ice princess, Juanita, an Incan mummy found sacrificed on top of a mountain 6700m high. We also went on a hike here for 3 days into the Colca Canyon. The morning of the hike we first stopped on the side of the cliffs to watch the condors fly up in the morning heat. These are the largest birds in the world and look similar to vultures. After a good breakfast we hiked down 4 hours into the canyon, 1000m below. We saw more condors overhead as we descended. The landscape is so different here, very dry and barren. There was one patch of green we could see at the bottom which they simply call the Oasis and where we stayed the second night. When we arrived ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Sacred Valley January 13th 2010

Since we are far from home and won’t be with our friends and family for Christmas, Dana and I wanted to do something different. I googled ‘Christmas in Cuzco’ and found this opportunity to volunteer in a small rural village 3 hours from Cuzco. All we had to do was bring presents for the kids and ourselves. I signed us up. On Christmas Eve we met with the company running the event and bought all the presents. Dana and I had 4 massive garbage bags full of dolls, trucks, balls, candy, etc. It was an experience in itself trying to buy these last minute presents with everyone else in the city doing the same thing. It took us an hour to fight our way 1 block through the crowds. At midnight the entire city exploded, literally. ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco » Cusco January 13th 2010

Dana´s love for last minute spontaneity is rubbing off on me. We ignored everyone´s advice to book the Inca trail months in advance and decided to start looking into it 4 days in advance instead. In our defense, we never know where we are going to end up, and love just travelling day by day, so trying to book something so far in advance was unappealing and seemingly impossible. We thought, we will try and if not, another time. Amazingly, there were spots left for 1 day in Dec. We spent the rest of the day frantically trying to find a reliable company to book with and also how to get to Cuzco the next day so we could acclimatize before the trek. Overall, 3 days before the trek, we were booked and on a plane ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail January 12th 2010

Our 64 km adventure begins with a bright and early start at 4am. We drive to an Andean village near the trail head to eat a hearty breakfast and buy some coca leaves (“it´s not a drug it´s a stimulant!¨) insists our guide) and walking sticks with fancy Peruvian embroidered handles. After the passport control (I have a cool Inca trail stamp now!) we began our walk at 8:30 am. Normally there are only 500 people including porters allowed on the trail at any time, but somehow we lucked out and there were only 300 people booked for our day, so we had a bit of privacy. In order to get the best (and private) campsite we had to hike farther our first day than most groups. We did 16km and ascended 1000m to our campsite ... read more

South America » Ecuador » Galápagos January 4th 2010

Galapagos is truly an absolutely amazing place. You hear stories and watch films about what it is like, but nothing can prepare you for the behaviour of these incredible animals. As you step off the plane you note that the landscape is quite barren, the plants are dried up and appear dead. They are not the lush tropical islands I had envisioned. To me, this just made it even more impressive that all this life exists in such an unfertile appearing place. Within minutes of my arrival as I walked down the pier, I saw a giant sea turtle surface in the water and had to carefully step over a few sleeping sea lions. Now I’ve seen sea lions before but these ones are special. They have no fear. And even though I knew this fact, ... read more
