Howdy Folks! After approximately 6 hours of sleep and a hot breakfast at the hotel to refuel, we decided to explore Knoxville some before we hit the road again. We strolled down to the site of the 1982 World’s Fair and home of the 266 feet / 26 stories tall Sunsphere! The general public was surprised when the “scruffy little town” of Knoxville, as it was known at the time, drew over 1 million visitors to the fair that year, making it the last successfully attended World’s Fair. Interesting factoid: Katie’s Dad actually attended the World’s Fair that year in 1982! After taking a look at the Knoxville skyline from up above we set out in search a statue of Composer Sergei Rachmaninoff that was sculpted by Victor Bokarov of Russia in honor of Mr. Rachmaninoff’s ... read more

We have finally arrived in Knoxville, TN after a long day of packing and repacking, multiple goodbyes, and inadvertent "spring" cleaning! I am helping one of my closest friends that I've know since high school, Katie, move cross-country from Spartanburg (Sparkle City, SC to San Diego, CA. She applied for and received a prestigious post-graduate school internship in Music Therapy. We hope to arrive in San Diego by New Years Eve in time to bring in the New Year. However, Mother Nature may have different plans for us as there have recently been floods and mudslides in Tennessee, tornados in Mississippi, icy roads in Texas, and a blizzard known as "Winter Storm Goliath" in New Mexico! Don't worry, we promised our mothers we would text or call them every night and let them know we made ... read more

This last leg was a doozy! By that, I mean we´re completely pooped. I´m sitting at the internet cafe in the Lima Airport right now waiting to catch my flight back to BA at midnight. We´ve seen 4 cities in about 6 days and we´re sleep deprived and burnt out on touristic tours to prove it! We flew into Cuczo on the 17th and spent the night there at this huge hostel called Loki Backpackers that housed around 200 people! The down side was the hostel set on top of the hill above the city (yet again) and hiking up to it every time was a chore since the altitud is so high, it really affects you! But luckily the locals found a natural cure a long time ago - chewing coca leaves or which now ... read more

We arrived in Rio at 7am on Sunday and went straight to a hostel in the neighborhood of Santa Teresa which is on a hill overlooking the city center. What the guidebook didn't say, after the taxi had already left, was we had to climb about 6 flights of stairs outside in the drizzling rain to actually reach the entrance of the hostel since it was literally on the side of the hill. But we got checked in a settled in, and after recovering from the climb walked back down the hill and caught a bus to the hippie market that happens only on Sundays in a square in the neighborhood of Ipanema which is on the other side of the city by the beach. The fair was really good and we were able to buy ... read more

So I finally finished exams and classes in BA, came out with a B average and my GPA didn´t go down, which I can´t complain about since I was studying abroad. Victoria, another girl from the CofC program decided last minute to travel with me! So now I have company with my grandparents and parents are happy about! We flew out of BA on the same day everyone else in our group flew home, we just left bright and early that morning at 6am and they left that night. We flew all day, changed planes in Porto Alegre, Brazil and finally arrived in Florianopolis around 4pm. We decided to go ahead and take a taxi to the bus station and buy our tickets for the bus to Rio de Janiero to make sure we could stay ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires April 24th 2008's been a while yet again, but here a final Buenos Aires update before I leave on my trip to Brazil and Peru before FINALLY returning HOME to the good ol' US of A!!! (can you tell I'm excited?) Don't get me wrong I have loved every minute of it, and wouldn't regret it for the world, but all good things come to an end, and when that end is near and you are expecting just can't wait for it to finally happen, especially if that end involves seeing your friends and family that you haven't seen in 4 months!!! So anyways, enough of that. My parents came down for their Spring Break at the end of March, beginning of April. We had booked them an apartment for the week only 2 blocks from my ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate March 29th 2008

So we pit stopped in Buenos Aires on Tuesday the 18th for one day to wash clothes and re-pack for Spring Break. Now heres the thing, we had reserved plane tickets for a 5hr flight to El Calafate which is at the tip of South America, almost the end of the world! But the day before we went to buy the tickets they raised the price and supposedly "called" us to inform us that they were raising the price and if we wanted to buy them at the price we reserved them under we needed to come that day, but none of us had missed calls or voice mails. So that just goes to show that when flying in Argentina, buy your tickets as soon as you find a good price because you never know if ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta March 29th 2008

HELLO! So, it has been a WHOLE month since I have gotten on here, it's about time right! Anyways we finally went on our first school sponsored excursion since the last on got canceled (or rather it's been postponed now until April the 17th). Two weeks ago we traveled to the Northwest of Argentina visiting several pueblos in the provinces of Salta and Jujuy. We flew out of Buenos Aires on the morning of Thursday the 13th of March arriving that afternoon. Then we took a bus to our hotel in the city of Salta, fended for dinner ourselves that night and got some rest. The next morning we took a bus to a pueblo called Cafayate, whose industry is mainly based on wine. But we stopped at several places along the way. First we stopped ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires March 2nd 2008

Okay, it's been more than two weeks since I last published an entry and SOOO much has happened. Sorry, I haven't been able to update it sooner, I have had more homework and been doing more stuff than you can imagine!!! Three weekends ago, I just stayed in Buenos Aires and got some homework done and such. Then we had three days of classes and we were supposed to take our first official excursion (planned by CofC) to Iguazu Falls (which are like the Niagra Falls of South America but bigger) in the Misiones province, but the trip was canceled due to a yellow fever outbreak in Paraguay and Brazil which border the falls with Argentina. We found out two days before we were supposed to leave, and classes were already canceled on Thursday so ... read more
