Our flight out of Detroit did not leave until 8:00 pm last night. We arrived in Rome around 10:00 am this morning. Driver met us and we checked int Capo Africa around noon. We wasted little time and headed out from our hotel to visit the city. The historic Collisusum and ancient Rome is only four blocks from our hotel. Very narrow streets and lots of traffic. About every other block there was a street side restaurant. Very nice and the food looked great. Dan used the map and I used my Iphone to guide us on our mission from the Rick Steve's Italy guide book. Our mission was to do the old Roman walk and see the famous sites, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain. After may blocks and dodging cars and motorbikes, we visited all ... read more

Will be adding more through day. Well our flight from Detroit left and arrived right on time. our Detroit flight, was a different story. We are sitting here waiting for the flight playing cribbage. Wednesday March 9, 2011 Our last day and we are greeted by rain and wind. We checked out at 9:00 am and headed back to the old city. Our visit today will be walking in the footsteps of Jesus to his crusifixtion. We entered the city through the Muslim quarter. Very interesting walking through the market in the morning. We saw many markets with fresh bread and fruit. The bread and fruits are displayed right out in the open. I am not sure how that works in the summer. We started on the "Via Dolorosa" at a church with an explanation on the many levels of old Jerusalem. This was important because the current street level is not the same as it was in Jesus's time. We did travel down below the street to see the ... read more

Tuesday March 8, 2011-Jerusalem The day was sunny but cold and windy. The camera's battery is getting low and our charger is not working. We started this morning at the Knesset, which is Israel's parliament. We spent most the morning at the Holocaust museum. It is built in a serpent style. You walked around different exhibits and crossed the main aisle. Very moving exhibits with videos and artifacts from the Holocaust. We saw a donation inscription from the Wilf family from New Jersey. They were responsible for a large donation to the museum. I think it is the same Wilf family that owns the Vikings. We just finished visiting the museum "Shrine of the Book". The museum highlight was the complete scroll of Isaiah. It was one of the scrolls found at the Dead Sea in ... read more

Monday March 7, 2011 We are heading to the old city.We just finished at Dome of the Rock. We were not able to go inside. We headed to the Wailing Wall and got chance to see a number of Bar Mitsvahs being held. We also got a chance to pray at the wall and see all the written prayers tucked into the wall. It was quite a humbling experience to pray at the wall, all men had to have a yamika on their head. Women were separated from the men by a wall. We then visited the Jerusalem Archalegocial museum and learned about the temple during King Herod and Jesus's time. We saw the gates and steps to the temple. Our next visit was to Mt. Zion. We visited David's tomb and the Upper room.It was somewhat ... read more

Sunday March 6,2011 I got up early to get a picture of the sun rising over the mountains in Jordan. We are heading out to Masada this morning. We just finished a two hour tour of Masada. We took a cable ride to the top of the mountain. We learned and saw the structures that were built. King Herod built two palaces to winter at. He constructed large water cisterns and collection systems. He also had roman style bathhouses and markets. The most important event was the siege of Masada. The romans attacked the jewish zealots who had escaped after the fall Jerusalem. They held the mountain until the romans built a ramp. The ramp eventually broke the walls down and the romans found all of them dead (1,000 men and women). The zealots decided they ... read more

Saturday March 5 We left Tiberias at 8:00 am this morning. We are heading south to the Dead Sea. Mediddo, one of the oldest ruins in Israel. Megiddo was the site of many battles and at least twenty five different civilizations. Most of the ruins were not discovered until 1925 by the university of Chicago. The site was very valuable to who ever controlled the site. Christian tradition identifies Megiddo as Armageddon-Revelations 16:16. Harold Spring bubbles up from the Gideon cave at the foot of the Gil boa. This was the site, where GIdeon's soldiers tried and selected for the war against the Midianites. See Judges 7:1,7:16-17,6-7. Our last stop before lunch was at Bet She an national park. The city was home to 30,000 to 40,000 people. The city was destroyed by the Assyrian king ... read more

March 4 We woke to a beautiful day and sunrise. Our first stop this morning was church at Tabgha. This was the site where Jesus fed the five thousand. The church we entered was built on the original site. We have included a picture of mosiac and the rock Jesus laid the basket of fish and bread. Our second stop was at the national park, Tel Dan. We hiked through an area similar to the Boundary Waters. We saw rushing water and low overhanging trees. We also came to a sacrificial site on the Lebanon / Syria border. We also saw a bunker and trench used during the six day war. We were less than 1/8 mile from the Lebanon / Syria border. Very safe and very quiet. We also visited the ancient city of Dan. ... read more
