July 10, 2010 Actually, we are not in Salida, CO but the list did not include Coaldale. We overnighted last night in a Walmart parking lot in Espanola, NM. Got an early start to Coaldale, CO to visit with friends, Karen and Lyle. They have a fantastic "Earthship" (passive solor, off the grid) house with beautiful vistas to look at. Very peaceful. Probably why they named it Peaceful Pines and Peaks. The ride up was also quite lovely. We are having a great time. Unfortunately, Lyle has to leave for Alaska tomorrow morning. We will also be heading back and picking up Rt. 66 in Santa Fe again. Update on the rash if you care. Karen whipped up some essential oil concoction which seems to be helping. Enjoy the pictures. See you on the road tomorrow. ... read more

July 9 2010 Woke up this morning with a spotty rash on both sides of my face. Have no idea what it is. Doesn’t itch, sting or hurt. (Picture included for your viewing pleasure.) If you know what it is, let me know. Finished the Texas Panhandle today. Nothing but small towns with abandoned buildings and motel signs. Stopped in Adrian, TX at the Midpoint Café for photo op and a piece of “Ugly Crust” Blueberry Pie. Finally into New Mexico. Tucumcari , here we come! More old motel signs, etc. A lot of the 66 in this part of the state is dirt or gravel and not very good and not recommended for RVs, so we stayed on I-40 and I-25 for quite a while. We took the Pre 1937 route through Santa Fe. One ... read more

July 8, 2010 We did not overnight in Weatherford after all. We went looking for some sights to see and ended up in Clinton, OK so that is where we stayed. In the morning we took our time waking up and getting ready to start again. Started the day at the Rt. 66 Museum in Clinton. A very interesting place. Took lots of pictures. The Valentine Manufacturing Company built many diners along the highway and the museum has rebuilt one on the property. The Trade Winds Motel is across the street from the museum—Elvis stayed there and they have kept the room exactly as it was . It has become clear to me that Rt. 66 was, for years, nothing but Motels, Diners, and Gas Stations. When IKE became president he was smitten by the Audubon ... read more

July 7, 2010 Nice to have air conditioning last night. Made for better sleep for sure. We left the campground early and went to do laundry in Chandler. I forgot just how much I hate Laundromats. Took pictures on the way out of Chandler of all the things named Lincoln in honor of our granddaughter, Lincoln. Also a 1930s Phillips 66 station in the process of being restored. Then , headed for Luther (the Boundrey BBQ housed in an old gas station, and an old stone service station build in the late teens or early 20s. ) In Luther there is also a piece of old 66. The first part is the original Portland Concrete built in 1928 and the second part is Blacktop over concrete with curbs built in 1929. Arcadia has a 1898 Round ... read more

July 5, 2010 Woke up this morning, had breakfast and did a workout and we were on our way by 8:30 a.m. The drive from Lebanon to Marshfield was rolling hills, meadows and some woods. Very peaceful. Did see a dead possum in the middle of the road. The drive from Marshfield to Stafford, MO was much the same. Rt. 66 basically runs along the side of the Interstates, so when you can get away from it the scenery is really lovely. The small towns are like a snapshot in time. In Paris Springs, MO we stopped at a rebuilt Sinclair Station. Gary Turner built a replica of the original station and loves to tell you about it and how things were way back then. He has a lot of history to tell. He sent us ... read more

July 4, 2010 MISSOURI Last night we did a bad thing. We thought we had a place lined up to stay in East St. Louis, but when we got there we were told, “No”. Unfortunately, St. Louis was having their fireworks over the Arch and we took a wrong turn and landed right in downtown St. Louis with what seemed like millions of cars and people. Thank God for the Garmin. I set it for the next town on our Historic Rt. 66 map and it took us to Manchester where we found a place to park around midnight. We left Manchester at 7:30 this morning and headed down “The Mother Road” again. Stopped at Rt. 66 State Park. They have a really good little Rt. 66 Museum at the Welcome Center. We spent some time ... read more

July 3, 2010 Today we spent most of the day in Springfield. We went to the Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library. Toured the hood were Abe and mary lived and the old State Capital Building. In learning about how things were done back then, I have decided that Politics and Politicians have not changed all that much. We just know more about thier back room dealings and other bad behavior. Too bad for us. Next was Auburn, IL where we traveled 1.4 miles on hand-laid brick road (Rt. 66) that runs through farm land just outside Auburn. We took a wrong turn somewhere and had to stop and ask a farmer wroking his field how to get back on Rt 66. On to Norwood where we traveled a very narrow stretch of two-lane. Legend has it ... read more

We are starting on our long awaited trip down Route 66. I'm sure it has changed since our childhood visions of "The Mother Road". But, that's OK. We are still going to travel all the way to California. Stopping to see as many silly, and not so silly, attractions along the way and to visit friends as well. We are going to try our hand at "Boondocking" and see if we can do it all the way. For those of of you who don't know, Boondocking is stopping and camping for "free". Rest stops, parking lots, public lands, parks, etc. Since we are self contained and we will, for the most part, only be overnighting we think we can do it. Maybe we'll hate it, but worth a try at saving some money for gas and ... read more
