July 20, 2010 We are not actually in Bridgeport, but beyond it in Coleville. We are camped in the middle of nowhere with mountains around and cattle mooing close by. The day at Yosemite was wonderful. Took lots of pictures. We went in the South Gate and out the East Gate. The drive on Tioga Road to get to the East Gate was awesome (about 56 miles of beauty). Yosemite is WOW and WOW and AWESOME. After leaving the park we took US Highway 395 North. The drive is spectacular. No pix as I maxed out my camera at the park. Beautiful mountain backdrops and cattle range in between. The West Walker River on one side. We have gotten to see some really beautiful California Countryside on this trip. CA is not all LA and San ... read more

July 19 2010 First, just a few more things about Santa Monica. I was so tired when I wrote last night’s blog that I totally forgot a few things. There were many street performers, of course. I did not take pix because they expected money if you did, so no pictures. There was Cat Woman, Darth Vader, a Hippy, Dippy woman, magician, break dancer. You get the picture. As we walked to the pier I saw two very normal looking guys sitting at a card table (in the sand) with folding chairs. There was a sign on the table reading “Free Advice”. On the way back they were still there, so I asked them if anyone ever asked for advice. They told me it was a good day. Both ways I never saw anyone asking. Needless ... read more

July 18, 2010 WE HAVE ARRIVED. It only took us 17 days (it is supposed to be a 9 day trip) and worth it all the way. We left San Bernadino at around 8:00 am and traveled through Rialto, Fontana, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Clairmont, LaVerne, San Dimos, Glendora, Azusa, Irwindale, Durate, Monrovia and finally into Pasadina, Los Angles and to the Santa Monica Pier. We arrived at the pier at around 1:30 and left at around 6:30 pm. We took our picture at every place that said we were at the end of the Mother Road. When we were in Winslow, AZ the gal at the store we were in told us to find Dan in a Kiosk on the Pier and tell him the girls from Wonslow said to say "Hello". We found him, and ... read more

A follow-up from yesterday. We checked into a RV park and went to do laundry (mostly because it was cool in there). We asked a young man what the temp was today. He said it was 123 degrees and that it would cool down to about 90 after the sun went down. I guess we never thought about going through the desert in JULY. DUH!!! We may bite the bullet and stay in a real Hotel tonight. Depends on how the day goes. No Gail, the heat does not abate by mid-day. it stays hot. Today, July 17, it was a little cooler - 105 degrees. We are stopped in another RV park in San Bernadino for the night. Today from Needles we went through goffs, Fenner, Essex, Danby, Cadiz Summit, Ludlow, New Berry Springs, Bagdad, ... read more

July 16 2010 We left Williams at 8:00am this morning. The drive from Seligman to Topock is roughly 159 uninterrupted miles of 66. Ashfork brought the Road Kill Café. You kill it, we grill it! And yet another Route 66 Motel and an old jailhouse. In Hackberry the General Store was a gold mine of 50s stuff. Including a 1959 Corvette, much like the one Angelo and Pete drove to Texas back in the day. I received a couple of comments regarding me resisting buying jewelry. I was told that if I didn’t want to buy it for myself I should buy it for my daughters. So I bought two pairs of earrings hand made by the owner’s mother :-) In Kingman. we decided to skip the next leg to Oatman because of the mountain driving ... read more

July 15 2010 Today we got an early start up to the Grand Canyon. We arrived there about 8:30 am just ahead of all the tourist buses . But, they caught up to us around 10:00. We walked the south rim for the first 2.5 miles and then started getting on the shuttle buses that arrive every 15 minutes from any point. It was very hot. Then rangers were warning everyone to drink a lot of water and stay in the shade as much as possible. The canyon is amazing. What a wonder of nature. Can't imagine how it would have felt just coming upon it on your pioneering way out west. Breathtaking! Would love to come back and just camp there for a week to take it all in. Maybe someday. I heard more languages ... read more

July 14 2010 Today would have been my Mom’s 87th birthday. Happy Birthday Mom! Wish you were here. We Left Holbrook at 7:00 am for Joseph City where we saw the trading post “Howdy Hanks and Sitting Bull’s Indian Store and Ella’s Fronier log structure ruin. Also the Jackrabbit Trading Post. On to Winslow Arizona, headed for Winona. Took our picture at “Standin on the Corner" in Winslow, AZ”. Winslow also has/had a Valentine Diner (now closed). You remember the rebuilt diner at the museum from a previous post. Also the La Posada Hotel which is a step back in time to the 1930s. Quite lovely. After leaving Winslow we had to jump on and off I-40 a few times. We took a side trip to Meteor Crater which is a Natural Landmark. Tried to get ... read more

July 13, 2010 Left Albuq. At about 8:30 this morning . Stopped at Rio Puerco Bridge which was on original 66. We crossed Pueblo Land where we encountered Owl Rock and Dead Man’s Curve. Then on to Budville which has the Budville Trading Post and the Villa de Cubera Trading Post where Hemmingway wrote part of “The Old Man and the Sea”. San Fidel had St. Joseph’s Chapel. As we crossed the Acoma Reservation we were not allowed to take pictures, so nothing to report. We were also told “DO NOT TRESPASS” Grants, NM has a lot of old Neon and Prewett is pretty much just a sign and the building that is home to the Swap Meet 66. Then 66 began to parallel a long row of pink-tinged cliffs and hills on the way to ... read more

Spent the night in the Tourist Information parking lot last night. Quiet. Don't know if it was legal but there was no one to ask and no one bothered us. Toured Downtown Santa Fe for about thee hours and then headed to Albuquerque. Santa Fe is really nice. If I were rich or if I had not put a stop to buying jewelrey I would be in big trouble. The Georgia O'Keefe Museum was great. She was a wierd duck. Couldn't take pix in there. The Stairway in the Loretto Chapel is beautiful. I'm sure you all know the story. The nuns who ran the chapel needed a stairway that would not block the choir loft but could find no one who could come up with a suitable plan. They decided to make a 9 day ... read more
