a brother being... travelling through life, one moment at a time... welcome to mystory of being brother...

i packed up and left canada on the fourth waning gibbous moon of 2009... a one-way ticket to thailand in my pocket and a triple entry visa to thailand proffered for free from the thai government in my passport... this allows up to 210 days in thailand with three mandatory trips out (1malaysia, 2burma, 3vietnam, cambodia, laos)... many possibilities, no solid plan... just hop on and tag along for the ride... that's pretty much what i'm gonna do too...

let go all judgements and just appreciate what is...

greetings all... when i last wrote i had just bought a train ticket to head back to bangkok... leaving chiang mai the train was delayed due to a broken engine, it was very confusing, noticed most other travellers were getting kinda uptight by the not knowing and not understanding what was happening, many comments of 'noone speaks english'... we ended up leavig two hours late but arriveed in bangkok at same time with everyone safe and sound,... how much energy wasted with worry, how much uneccessary suffering these people caused themselves... when i arrived back in bangkok i was touted by tuk-tuk driver... i asked how much and says 170B, i exclaim in thai 'too expensive, i give you 60B (which was the cost of a metered taxi... this gets a good chuckle from another driver ... read more

all who wander are not lost... but some of us are... ;-) hope this finds all healthy and happy... i have been aimlessly wandering around northern thailand since my last post trying to figure out what i want to be doing and where i want to be going... thankfully i have not put too much energy into it and have more or less just let things happen as they will... since i came north in the first place to sit the vipassana course and it was cancelled, i really had no thoughts of what to do... so here is what i wish to share since my last post... went to the train station about two hours before my train dejparted for chiang mai... found a quiet corner out of the way to sit for 45min... mossies ... read more

greetings... thought i would share these photos from a day trip i took to sukhothai... one of the first thai empires as i understand it... i rode there from phitsanulok on my scooter, about 75km each way through beautiful rice paddy filled countryside... stopped on the way for a bite to eat and was handed the best menu i have ever seen... although i just had to make something up cause i couldn't figure out what anything was and the waitress was standing over me while i was reading it... i hope you can read it too... the ruins were special, ranking right up there for me with some of the great mayan ruins of mexico and guatemala... if you can sense just a tiny bit of the peace i felt while there, then this blog ... read more

it must be or it would be otherwise... i spent a couple of days in bangkok (which is actually a western basterdization of the name of a village that used to exist there called bang makok... the official name of the city is, are you ready for it, 'krungthep mahanakhon amonratanakosin mahintara ayuthaya mahadilok popnopparat ratchathani burirom udomratchaniwet mahasathan amonpiman avatansathit sakkathattiya witsanukamprasit' , which translated roughly means, 'great city of angels, repository of divine gems, great land unconquerable, grande and prominent realm, royal and delightful capital city full of nine noble gems, highest royalty dwelling and grande palace, divine shelter and living place of reincarnated spirits'..) planing my vipassana meditaion schedule while here in se asia... first course scheduled to begin on the 13th of may so i went and bought a train tic... read more

greetings... so the first of may was a half moon party on kho pha-ngan so i thought i should take off before it started... i caught a night ferry to the mainlandand then an early bus bound for phuket... phuket is an island province, the only one in thailand... it is on the west coast on the andaman sea... it seems to be one of the more expensive place in thailand, focused on the higher end tourist... i came because i heard that i could camp on the beach in the national park without a permit... so i get off the bus and catch a motorbike taxi for the 5km ride to the beach... unfortunately, partially due to the language barrier, we get to the beach but drive around for half an hour asking people where ... read more

salutations sibling beings... this is my seventh day on kho pha-ngan and i am content, at ease... i mentioned a brother from calgary coming here, brother paul... he spent three nights on the island and we just hung-out the whole time... very comforting to have a little piece of canada here... if nothing else, not to have to focus so intently all the time on language just to understand the most basic things, so much energy... i thouroughly enjoyed our time, our long, verbose discussions on life, the universe, and everything... i felt we actually had quite a bit in common which made for many laughs, like an old friend you've known for years... so i met paul at his minibus drop-off around sunset... the next day we decided to rent scooters... about $6cdn/24hrs, quite the ... read more

greetings brothers and sisters... i departed bangkok on the night of the 22nd for a quick 11hr bus journey to a surat thani in the south of thailand... little did i know there would only be one bathroom stop on the way and that would be about 2hrs into the ride... i don't know how they do it, i nearly burst... obviously there was no bathroom on the bus... it was nice and cool however with the a-con blasting (i knew there was a reason i brought a hoodie to thailand ;-)... on arrival in surat thani, at 0530hrs, i caught an overpriced songthaew (baby pick-up with 2 bench seats, litterally translates as 'two seats') to what i was told was going to be the bus station... turned out to be a tour guide in the ... read more

greetings from thailand... i departed calgary on friday night with a connection through vancouver... so the plane is taking off in calgary and as soon as it leaves the runway, the cockpit door flies open and i can see out the front window of the plane from my seat... after a few seconds the flight attendant pulls a little curtain closed, way to go air canada... in vancouver they thought they saw a pocket knife in my carry-on so they emptied it and rescanned it to no avail... then i am stopped by a customs agent who wants to chat about how much money i have, almost missed my plane, but did not... then after a 12hr flight i arrive in taipei and for some reason am not allowed to leave the airport, therefore no smoking ... read more
