Wow! You look like your mom!! Thanks for the descriptive travelog, Becky. Sorry you were so ill. Thankful for the things you learned. When I saw your picture, I had to gasp. I thought I was looking at Marion!! You even sound like her. It was heartwarming and made me feel warm and fuzzy all over. No pictures of the wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Phil Willis. Do you have any to send? Take care and God Bless. Love, Aunt Doris
toilets I think a lot of Americans have a hard idea understanding just how much money we have. The Gross Domestic Product per capita in the Philippines is $5000. The GDP per capita in the United States is 43,800. You, as a student working part time, make much more than most of the 97,000,000 people living in the Philippines. In fact an American below the poverty level (in the US) making $10,000 per year are richer than most the people on this planet, or who ever lived.

I hope you get to travel much more and get sick less!
travels I had a couple friends from Laos and they lived in a big city (can't remember the name) but anytime they needed money they would take something they didn't use anymore and go outside and sell it. Anytime, you would just walk out onto the street and start hawking your stuff. It's a completely different social norm than the 'compartmentalized' barter that goes on in North America.
Also on the number 2 in the toilet pic, in many parts of the world toilets consist of a hole in the ground that you squat above. Even places with running water and sewer treatments. So I think the 'Don't squat on the toilet' instruction is very apt. On a related note squatting is physiologically easier than sitting.
SUch Fun! Oh heck! I love how descriptive your travel journal is! I almost feel as though I went with you! Glad you had a good time and that it makes you want to travel more cuz I am always in need of a good travel partner! (AND I speak spanish :)
Ice cream Yeah that would've been great to bring the ice cream home, but I don't think that it would've lasted the about 20 hours it took me to get home!
About Mall Of Asia I'm Filipino and from what i've heard, no one enjoys shopping at that mall. It's too freaking big. Even the hardcore mall rats steer clear of that mall.
I've been to that mall too and don't plan to go back. SM Megamall in Pasig City (that's just 3 MRT stations away from the Ayala Station in Glorietta) is enough for me.
Usually I am an arm chair traveler. I like to read books about other peoples adventures. Now that I have started having some of my own I would like to share them.... full info
