Thursday 5thJuly 2012 We left our campers at Parry Creek Farm and headed off with tents and camping gear towards Purnululu National Park and the Bungle Bungles, leaving at about 8am. It was a fine, mild blue day. The road to Purnululu after the turnoff from the Great Northern Highway is not good (although Dad says it is better than last year). Quite rocky, with some hills so steep you can’t see over the bonnet to see the downside of the hill, and a number of creek crossings. So that 50km took 2 hours. I was a bit surprised how many bridges on the Great Northern Highway are one lane only, too. Not such a great highway. Some sections have soft shoulders and no marked edges too. However there is some lovely hill scenery on the ... read more

Tuesday 3rdJuly 2012 We left Drysdale River Station at around 8:30 am. We’ve had some problems with the diesel sub tank, it is not pumping to the main tank. Also Dad and Mum’s vehicle has issues with the headlights. All these dusty corrugated roads are hard on the vehicle electrics. Around midday, Richard and Marion’s camper got a flat tyre passing through a water crossing with a bitumen bottom with a large pothole in the bitumen. Mum and Dad drove through ok but we got a flat in the same place as we came through, so we spent half an hour changing tyres. Ours has a bent rim too. We stopped at Bindoola Falls for lunch. It’s a short walk from the parking area (not signed as Bindoola Falls) to the lookout area. You look out ... read more

Saturday 30thJune 2012 We parked our camper trailers and caravan in the long term parking area of Drysdale River Station. A lot of travellers leave their towed accommodation here whilst they travel to the Mitchell River National Park. We then continued north along Kalumburu Road for 100km and then took a west road about 87km in to the Mitchell Falls campground. The Kalumburu Road continued in poor condition, and the minor road to the campground was much worse, so whilst we left the station at 8:30am we didn’t arrive at the campground until 1:30pm. Mike did a good job negotiating the rocky roads and creek crossings. We were glad we had decided not to bring the camper trailer. The fan palms (Livingstonia, I think) were dense in places along the drive, particularly near Doongan station. They ... read more

Wednesday 27th June 2012 We packed up our campsite at Silent Grove and started off around 8am. We passed a big King Brown snake on the road (he slithered back into the bush). We collected some firewood and also stopped to see if we could help some people who had lost a wheel on their camper trailer. Unfortunately the axle appeared to have been damaged and they had to unhitch and go back to Imintji roadhouse for help. We stopped at Adcock Gorge, a very scenic gorge on station land. The track out was a bit rough. We saw a water monitor sitting partly in the water, and also some colourful ants (yellow with a green bottom). There were not many visitors at Adcock Gorge. The signage is not great – there is a fork in ... read more

Monday 25thJune 2012 Mike, the kids and I decided to make the long drive to see Geikie Gorge. Mum, Dad, Richard and Marion didn’t want to do it at this time. We set out in the early morning chill, just before 7am, and not far from camp we saw several wallabies and two dingoes, one of which stopped on the road for a photo. We then drove past the Napier Range, with the King Leopold Range further in the distance, along some average gravel road, before reaching the main highway. We went through Fitzroy Crossing and out to Geikie Gorge. We went on the one hour boat tour along the gorge, run by DEC. The staff apologised for the cold weather but it was actually a very pleasant mild day. Geikie Gorge is also part of ... read more

Saturday 23rdJune 2012 We left our Broome campsite at around 8am. The wind had continued very strong all night. I was a bit sad to leave Broome, as it has been a very comfortable and pleasant stay. We met with Mum, Dad, Marion and Richard at the Roebuck service station just out of Broome, then proceeded to Derby. We had a look at the old Prison Boab just outside Derby, a striking tree with a massive hollow trunk. We had lunch at the Derby jetty. The tides are huge here, even bigger than Broome. The water is brown due to silt from the Fitzroy River. Derby has a nice row of boab trees down the main street. Shortly after leaving Derby we turned onto the Gibb River Road. Initially it was bitumen, then changing to sections ... read more

20th June 2012 We had a great Broome day today. We first went to the internet cafe to do some errands, then headed out to the Malcolm Douglas Wildlife Park. Alex and Kyle really enjoyed holding a baby saltwater crocodile, and watching the tour where the guide fed a number of the large male crocs. It is their inactive season (winter) - they must be quite a sight in summer. Some of them are massive. Interesting OH&S aspects of the egg collection work... We also saw birds, cassowaries, wallabies and dingoes. In the afternoon we went on a 30 minute camel ride with Broome Camel Safaris. The operator, Alison Bird, has been working with camels for many years. Alex and Kyle had not realised how tall the camels would seem once on them, but enjoyed their ... read more

June 18th We left Cape Keraudren and made the long drive to Broome. It's a pretty uninteresting drive, other than the wattles flowering which brightened it up. We have a great site at the Roebuck Bay Caravan Park, fronting the ocean. We went into town and had a very expensive Chinese meal for dinner. June 19th We went into town and gave the local economy a bit of a boost. We got some more books for the kids, a few clothes and some food, and also Mike took the car to get a chip in the windscreen repaired (that happened as a truck passed us on the way to Broome). It's a pretty town, some lovely trees (including boabs), but somewhat marred by the beverage-container-based litter. Speaking of beverages and containers, Mike found that one can't ... read more

16th June 2012 We spent some time this morning visiting the displays and shop at the Comet Gold Mine in Marble Bar. We then went to Doolena Gorge for morning tea. It's a scenic spot between two red cliffs, with pelicans, black swans and other water birds. We had lunch at the DeGrey River crossing. This appears to be a very popular campground, there were a lot of caravans camped there. (The fact that it is free is no doubt a factor). There was quite a bit of water in the river and Alex and Mike had a quick swim. We continued to Cape Keraudren, a coastal reserve about 180 km from Port Hedland. It is very flat and open land with low lying vegetation (very wide horizons here). We are camped at the Boat Ramp ... read more

Yesterday, June 14th, we left Karijini early and drove towards Munjina Roadhouse. The road around there is very scenic, very close to dramatic hills with chunky red tops. Past Munjina, we drove along the Hamersley Ranges towards Wittenoom (the almost-ghost-town). The road passes close to the town and we could see a number of houses still there. There is an asbestos warning sign prior to the town. We continued on to the Millstream-Chichester National Park, and had a look at the Millstream homestead and the lovely pool and lush vegetation around it. We had a swim in the Fortescue river from Deepreach Point (a very good access point for swimming) before camping at the Stargazers campground. A few things had been shaken in the camper during the day's drive, which had been quite a lot of ... read more
