Today was the day we (well, at least I) had been waiting for. The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, which takes you to many of the set locations of the famous movie, and also gives you a history of the real Von Trapps and information about the movie. We woke in the original Von Trapp house early in the morning. Our tour started at 9:15, and although we had done the test-drive of getting there the night before, I was eager to be ready to make sure we had plenty of time. I wanted to check-out by 8 to give us time to walk to the bus stop and then remember our way to Mirabellplatz, where the tour started. Breakfast in Villa Trapp is only served from eight, so we had to forgo it ... read more

Probably not the going to be the most exciting read today, as the events that occurred today were not overly enthralling. Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable day for our arrival and overnight stay in Salzburg. We woke early this morning - the first time for the whole trip we have needed to set an alarm. Our journey today was via train to the city of Salzburg - the birthplace of Mozart and the city which belongs to the Sound of Music. We went for an early breakfast at the hotel, and unlike yesterday, it was fairly quiet. Only a few other couples were about at about 7am. As this was only going to be an overnight stay our main luggage was able to stay in our hotel, and we each took a backpack with us ... read more

There's so much that we already love about Innsbruck. From its small town feel to the mountainous backdrop that is visible no matter where you go. It's so stunning here, and absolutely nothing like anywhere in Australia. The first thing we noticed upon opening the windows this morning were the mountains. They quite literally surround Innsbruck in every direction. The cloud and mist this morning just added to the feeling that we had entered a place that we would truly love. When we checked in yesterday, we had organised with the hotel staff that breakfast today would be added on to our hotel charge. After the mishap with rooms it seemed that she had forgotten to transfer that information over. It didn't matter too much, I don't think. They still let us eat, anyway! The breakfast ... read more

We have made it to Innsbruck, but not without a few mishaps on the way. This will probably be a rather short blog due to two things: we spent most of the day at the airport and it seems that the better the hotel you stay at the more difficult accessing and using the Wifi is. Well, where shall I begin? We woke to a very white Vienna today. It seemed that overnight the snow had continued to fall, leaving the ground a good 2-3 centimetres thick as you walked. After enjoying our last breakfast at the Zeitgeist Hotel we made our way to the hop on hop off bus. Our flight wasn't until the afternoon, so we had a few hours to kill and the zoo was the last thing on our list before we ... read more

For our last day in Vienna before heading on to Innsbruck, we were treated to a beautiful, cold winter's day. A chilly -4 Celsius at the warmest part, it snowed from about 10am and continuing even now as I write this, at 8pm. I believe by the end of the day the snow on the ground would have had to have been at least half an inch. It was cold, but very beautiful to wander the streets amongst the Christmas lights that are still up in Vienna. Today was spent trying to cover as much as we could before we leave this beautiful city tomorrow. We had a plan, and knowing that there was no public holiday and no weekend that could interfere, we were ready to leave nice and early to ensure we got it ... read more

A few things we learnt today. The first is that winter in Europe can be a pain in the behind, in more ways than one. Of course, the obvious being that it is extremely cold. Today couldn't manage to reach above 0 Celsius, which meant that we froze our busts off whenever we were outside (which was often). The second problem is that it can really mess with our plans. The next thing we learnt was that being a tourist in Austria is quite inexpensive, particularly when dining out. The food portions are very generous, and generally a meal costs less than 10 euro. But more on our dinner experience later, and back to how winter can mess with our plans. Here in Vienna there are many bus touring services. What we have found very beneficial ... read more

We woke today to a very cold and foggy morning. It reminded me of a morning in Canberra - some fog and you need to rug up on your way to work or school. In Austria, however, that weather was all day. We were even able to stare directly into the sun without it hurting our eyes. After breakfast we went into the hotel lobby to wait our ride to the bus, where our tour would begin. Months ago we booked an all day tour to the Danube Valley (located in the north-east of Lower Austria). Tours run throughout the year, but they change it up a bit in winter, compared to the summer months. The starting point was actually only about a ten minute walk from our hotel, but considering we had already organised to ... read more

I'd like to begin this entry with a few observations about the Austrian people I have made over the past few days. First and foremost, they are really friendly. I do not recall meeting an unfriendly one so far. Another observation is that most seem to be able to speak English, and happily do so. This varies from other countries I have been in, where they reluctantly do it. Particularly in the heart of Vienna, you can walk into a café, a restaurant, or a tourist attraction and if you look like a tourist, they will automatically ask you "English or Deutsch?" We respond with English and they will automatically begin speaking to you in English. It's wonderful and helpful to have this, although, it has had me thinking how disappointing it is, too. The further ... read more

It was not a good start to the day, but in the end it turned out to be a wonderful (if not rather boring) New Years Eve. When I woke in the morning, I was horribly sick. I was vomiting every 15-30 minutes. This was not what I wanted on my very first official day in Vienna. We had tickets to a New Years Eve performance at the Spanish Riding School, and then we had plans to see the city and go to a few places. We were going to get a train to the city area and then get a hop on hop off bus to near the Riding School (we have a 6 day Vienna pass, which means we have unlimited access to all the hop on hop busses around Vienna. It was very ... read more

It was a very, very long flight from Sydney to Vienna, with delayed flights, turbulent flights, and long stopovers, but we have made it! Neither of us are spectacular flyers. We hate it, really, so of course when they made the announcement at Sydney that our flight to Dubai was delayed by 45 minutes (it ended up being longer) for being stuck in maintenance, that worried us. Turns out (once we ended up asking someone) that it was just a normal service to the plane, but due to planes landing and it needing to be towed across the landing strip, air traffic control had to delay that part. So, after finding out nothing was wrong with our trip, all was good! The flight was 14 hours, and considering we had an 8 hour stopover in Dubai, ... read more
