I think I'll go for a walk outside now... Walk, walk, walk, walk. I cannot believe how little I realized I actually walk at home. I know it is not the norm for people to walk 20km-30km a day, but I probably don't walk more than 4km a day at home. It's kind of sad. I love to joke and ask people, "Hey, what're you doing tomorrow?!" Most of the time people don't get the joke and will answer something like, "Oh, I think we will try to walk about 25km and make it to Azofra tomorrow..." Then I normally respond, "Oh, okay... I was joking... get it, like what else does anyone really have to do except walk..." Well, it's funny to me. Where's my basket Bunny?! My very first Easter without an easter basket filled with candy... April 7: Uterga to Lorca Tina and I had another great day together this day. We, like always, took our time leaving the albergue in the morning. We walked slowly but steadily. I remember exactly where we stopped for lunch. We walked down through a town where all of the people were gathered in the center having a huge cookout. There were four ladies cooking paella in the biggest paella pan I have ever seen in my life. We continued slowly through the town until we reached the outskirts. In the distance we spotted a lone bench overlooking a beautiful view of open fields with mountains in the background. We sat a long while eating and talking. After spending most of ... read more

You are not in Spain; This is Basque Country! April 4: Zubiri to Pamplona Today was the day that we arrived at our first big city along the route, Pamplona. I remember the walk fondly as I spend most of my day walking with Sara. This is the day that Sara and I's relationship really blossomed. Sara is a wonderful young woman from Sweden who has a heart of gold and the funniest personality. She truly is her own person with a wild character that is hard not to like. We instantly clicked even though we are two very different people. Approaching Pamplona I noticed a lot of signs and graffiti everywhere saying, "You are in Basque Country!" "This is not Spain" "Freedom for the Basque!" I know that it can be a rather touchy subject ... read more

"Noni Carry Me!" April 2: Orrison to Roncesvalles Over the mountain and through the woods to... well we certainly are not on our way to Grandmother's house... (I am just thinking about my Grandmother because I titled this blog for her). Yesterday and todays hike, which many people do in one full swoop, have been said to be the most challenging day(s) on the Camino. From St Jean to Orrison I walked straight up up up up up for 8km, and then today we hiked over the Pyrenees Mountains. It was unlike anything I have ever done or seen before in my entire life. It felt like a dream... Journal Entry-------------------- Monday April 2nd, 2012 My whole body hurts so bad! Evidently yesterday and today are the hardest days. As hard as today was, it was ... read more

The Things that We´re Most Scared of, Are the Things that Could Set us Free Leaving Roncesvalles March 31 I woke up around 0500 to the noise of others getting ready for their day. Almost all of the people in the albergue are starting their walk from Roncesvalles. I attempted to go back to sleep because I figured I was not walking today and could sneak in another hour or so of rest. I was wrong! I was shaken awake around 0645 by a man that works at the albergue. I threw myself out of my bunk and packed up my belongings and headed out into the dark streets. I walked just a small distance to the nearest cafe where I asked the man working there to call a cab for me. While I waited I ... read more

Whether or not I Make it There is Will itself Bye Bye Mary! March 28 After Mary left, I wandered around and found a nice hostel to stay in. It was also called Hostel One but is located in a different part of Barcelona then the other Hostel One that Mary and I had stayed in on arrival. I immediately unpacked and met my one other roommate in our four bedroom dorm. Her name is Silvia and she is from Brazil. After chatting for a bit I took a shower and quick nap. I did some wash by hand and then headed out to eat some lunch. It is horrible, but my favorite thing to eat in Spain other than paella is grilled ham and cheese. They call it a Bikini in this part of Spain. ... read more

The only thing worse than having things go wrong, is having everything go as planned Right now Spain is in a rough spot. With unemployment in Spain rising consistantly over the past half year, more people then ever are out of work. It is said that one in five people do not have a job, bringing the total figure to nearly 5 million unemployed. The percentage is said to be around 23% which is more than twice the EU average. It is odd because at first glance, they do not seem to be suffering. However, looking hard at the surroundings, it becomes easy to spot. While there have always been people begging in the streets, the things I have seen in the past week have painted a bigger picture for me. The man begging outside of ... read more

Makeout Queens and Kings Valencia is a beautiful city. I must admit after spending four days here, I think I like it better than Barcelona. It has such a wonderful feel to it, with lots of delicious Paella Valenciana, stunning architecture, friendly locals, a lovely beach, and the most amazing park. I would move here in a heartbeat. There are so many people out with their dogs every single day so I really do believe that my dog Bill would be happy here too. Oh and Lee, there is the coolest park ever to go running through :) We arrived in Valencia right after the famous fire festival called Las Fallas. The festival is held in commemoration of St Joseph. Each neighborhood is responsible for creating their own falla which is then burnt out in the ... read more

Oh Barcelona! Beautiful Barcelona and embarassing Americans abroad... March 20th Barcelona is a charming Mediterranean city literally bursting at it's seams with European urban style, art, architecture, and most importantly, delicious Catalan cuisine. The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona ranks in as Spain's second largest city after Madrid. It is not hard to see why it is one of the most populous urban areas in all of the European Union... Lee start packing. My flight to Barcelona started with 50 16year olds in the airport talking so loudly that I could not hear what the lady was announcing over the intercom. I asked if there were any upgrades available for fear of having to sit near them. Fortunately, I did not. The flight was okay, and I think I only had one or ten visions of us ... read more

So I have this crazy friend... her name is Marry. She is almost always my partner in crime for any given situation that may be deemed a bit, well, crazy. I received a message from her yesterday out of the blue that went something like this, Marry- "Hi. Ok. I apparently get there at 11am" Me- "WHAT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!" Marry- "Am I too late?" Me- "NO I MEAN OMG YOU'RE COMING TO SPAIN??!?!" Marry- "Haha I'm finishing booking my ticket now." ...And so my friend Marry will be meeting me in Barcelona on the 20th and staying with me until the 28th. We had talked about her coming and hangingout with me for a week, but then decided it wouldn't work out for her. Thus, I had began mentally preparing my solo journey. I am not the least ... read more
