Africa » Ethiopia August 31st 2019

Next morning onwards towards the Kenya/Ethiopian Border. We entered Ethiopia with some trepidation. Stories about stone throwing put a bit of a damper on travelling through this beautiful country. But I have also seen and learned that it’s better to look at the situation first hand before jumping to conclusions, and making assumptions. We entered Ethiopia at Moyale. The Border crossing went quite smooth. First time on the trip where our luggage gets checked properly but it all gets done in a professional way. Even the engine and chassis numbers get properly checked. On entering the border we only realised then that in Ethiopia everybody travels on the left hand side of the road. Moyale is quite a big border town. People are friendly but not really a place where I will walk around alone at ... read more

What a amazing experience...we did a daytrip from Arusha. We were picked up at the Masai Camp in Arusha where we camped...transported to close to the crater where we enjoyed our breakfast and then boarded our safari vehicles to head to the Ngorongora Conversation Area....Our driver was Mike..exceptional guy and definately the guide that goes out of his way to show you the best animals and best sites.....we had too many photo opportunities to mention!! My highlight of the day was obviously the close up with the lions...one even came to lie next to our vehicle...saw many more animal and bird species...This is a must do experience..if you cant afford the safaris from Arusha just DO THIS!!!! Amazing... ... read more

No motorbikes allowed. Great Day Visit. We entered the gate at Colchester (the Matyholweni Entrance Gate) from Port Elizabeth side and exit the gate in the north close to the Addo Main Camp on the Paterson Road. It is possible to do the trip in one day and you are guaranteed to see the elephants although definitely less than on previous visits. A lot of other animals to be seen and also a great bird life. On entry get a map which include a game, that allocate points to each animal and it makes it interesting and keep you wide awake. The one with the most points is obviously the winner. A lot of photo opportunities. No motorbikes allowed because of the presence of lion in the park.It is really worth a visit.... read more

On the Sunday morning, after breakfast at the Royal Hotel, me and Daan split up and head back home in two different directions. He north, back to Bloemfontein and me south back to East London. We had to cut our trip short by a day because of the extreme weather predictions. Snow and cold weather as well as rain. Not ideal weather for bike riding! I took the gravel road south onto the 7 Gates and Grootrivierpoort road. Nice gravel road in the beginning but soon into quite a challenging road, reminding me a bit of the Gamkaspoort and Sani Pass roads. A lot of up and down hills with rocky roads. Small sections with steep cliffs. Not for the fainthearted- But a beautiful road, a definately must do again, but at a slower pace. A ... read more

We awoke early on Hermanus Potgieters orange farm in Patensie, thanks to all the early farm noises. Got going, back to Patensie to fill up with petrol and then to "Padlangs" farm stall for their famous "Leeuloop Breakfast". A massive breakfast to keep you going for the day. After breakfast we left for the Baviaanskloof. We took our time and took various great photo's. At the Cape Nature office at the entrance, they said that there is a possilbility that we won't be able to cross some rivers, and then maybe will have to turn back! The previous night a bakkie got stuck in one of the river crossings. We stopped at the World Heritage Site information centre where a very helpful and informative Noel Isaacs showed us around. With that in the back of our ... read more

Danie joined me from Bloemfontein for our planned trip to the Baviaanskloof. He travelled the previous day all the way from Bloemfontein, having departed in freezing conditions. Thank goodness for the "heated grips" Daan. He only started defrosting at Aliwal North! Next morning I finalised some last minute work commitments, and then were ready to leave. Ready to go, I realised that my helmet and gloves are stll in a now secure and locked house, and the key for the lock with Jillian. Must be the age catching up. Tried to break lock without success, But Daan with his experience saved the day! Eventually we were on the way. First stop at Daans plot close to Kaisers Beach for a quick look around and then we were on the way! We took the route via Port ... read more
