Had fruit salad for breakfast, then drove to the nearby port to board the 60-second ferry to the bay. It was so close, we could have swam if we'd have wanted to get wet, but since we were spending a few hours wandering the shops we thought it best to take the ferry. Currently Lian is at the age where every second word is poo or butt hole which is quite entertaining, especially how he manages to wean it in to pretty much every sentence. Either that or it's a conversation centered around destruction, fire and blowing things up.We collected a picnic from the supermarket and sat at the park overlooking the waterfront while the boys played on climbing frames. Back at the Tent that afternoon, I lay on the lawn basking in the sunshine and ... read more

Dot made us bacon and eggs for breakfast at our Mongolian Tent, then we went off in the minivan for a day at Hahei Beach with the kayak’s. I was in a kayak on my own and was a bit nervous in case I got stuck; floated away or capsized but I got the hang of it right away and loved every minute of it. It was wonderful to be in the middle of the ocean and being able to look back at the landscape with beautiful light coloured rock. We kayaked to a private beach called Cathedral Cove. There were other people there who had arrived by boat but I don't think there was a way to access this beach by foot or car which made it more exclusive. We spent all day there, snacking ... read more

We got up at 7am and were on the bus to the city by 8. When I was a teenager, I wouldn’t be seen dead sitting on the second row of a bus - always had to be at the back. Now I’m thrilled if there’s a space on the first few rows so I don’t have to lug my bag to the back. Had a skinny latte at the Harbour then boarded the ferry to meet Dot and Neil, Ellie’s friends from South Africa. The Marian Keys book I’m reading at the moment had me literally laughing outloud, it’s brilliant. Dot and Neil were waiting in their minivan with their two little boys, Lian and Jonas. During the journey, Lian insisted we must be driving in circles. I was very impressed by how much he ... read more

Got up to get a glass of water in the middle of the night, filled my glass at the kitchen sink by the window and completely freaked out looking in to the darkness, not knowing what was lurking out there. Hurried back to the sofa and dived under the cover. My mind was racing for the next 10 minutes, conjuring up all kinds of horror stories. Being scared of the dark is one thing but I’m sure the alcohol I consumed last night didn’t help. Woke up again at 10am and drew the curtains aside to check out the weather. We were in luck! Gorgeous sunshine. Found a giant shamrock stuffed down my bra from the St Patrick’s day antics last night. Woke Ellie up and made her breakfast in bed again. There wasn’t a cloud ... read more

Walked the 2 minutes from Jenny's house to St Hellier beach, and settled on the dark sand in the sunshine. Within 20minutes, a murky black cloud as dense as a slab of concrete had crawled across the sky and it started to rain. Ellie had nipped to the shop so I dashed in to the nearest coffee shop and had a skinny latte. El found me not long after and when the weather perked up, we went back to the beach for the rest of the afternoon. Ellie was really excited for our night out with the girls tonight. Her friend Dot (another girl she worked with in South Africa) was getting the ferry over from Waiheke Island to join the four of us for a meal and drinks in the city. Once we'd all got ... read more

Ellie and I slept again until 11am. Finally I feel like our "jetlag" has worn off. Grabbed a strong frothy skinny latte on the way to the bus station at St Helliers shops, then watched a guy windsurfing in the sea while we waited for the bus to arrive. He did really well and we could see how difficult it must be to do this sport. Headed downtown, then boarded another bus to Devenport, a historic seaside village on Auckland's North Shore that is also home to the New Zealand Navy base. We had lunch in a lovely indoor cafe with potted plants, and birds flying around. I was so engrossed in my book that I couldn’t even look up to eat my toasie until I'd finished it - anyone that knows me well would tell ... read more

El asked me if I wanted to do a sky dive today. Clearly her brain has taken leave of absence. I simply replied “Hell to the No” and she knew to leave it at that. We didn’t actually get out of bed until 11.30am (I’m not kidding when I say we’re suffering from Jetlag... yes I know the time difference is only 3 hours, but we’re wrecked, our body clock is completely messed up. Nothing to do with the wine last night I assure you). Donna took us out for the day in her car for a tour around Auckland. We went passed amazing beach-front apartments and a harbour with some outrageously sized boats. We drove through Parnell, famous for its art galleries, cafés, and charming oldy-worldy shops; then passed Newmarket the main shopping area in ... read more

We had forgotten to check our flight time before bed (this is how relaxed - or stupid - we’ve become) so ended up getting up 45 minutes too early. I remember saying to Ellie last night our flight was between 8 and 9am, but it didn’t cross my mind to check. Glenn gave us a lift to the airport, after handing me a piece of chocolate from his Dairy Milk Snack Pack - what were Dairy Milk thinking including Turkish Delight in their selection? Yuk! After such a chilled out experience at Cairns airport the other day, we were disappointed this one turned out to be appalling. First the Meanie on the check in desk insisted we show our booking confirmations (not just our passports and reference numbers) so I had to root through my backpack ... read more

As usual I was awake early the morning after the night before, so I helped Jessy clean the house then sunbathed on the Trampoline waiting for Ellie to wake up. Josh rang and I arranged that we’d meet him in the city centre in a few hours for our tour around Brisbane. A few hours later on the way to the city, we met a girl on the train. I was pleasantly surprised she started the conversation with us as she looked like one of those moody Too-Cool-For-You teenagers (think they’re called Emo’s or something?). She was lovely and really interested in hearing about our travels as she hopes to do this one day too. Saw the fattest lady I’ve ever laid eyes on. She was wider than she was tall; such a peculiar shape. And ... read more

Woke up at 3am and decided to work on the blog. Pottered around all morning until about 7am when I woke Ellie up and got her excited for tonight. We wrapped her up in a quilt, toga style so she could have a cig on the balcony without flashing the neighbors, and then went down to the garden to sunbathe on the trampoline. Mark Owen from Take That has admitted numerous affairs… I mean really - are no men decent?! Of all people, you would have thought innocent Mark Owen would be faithful. Ellie made me toast, I napped and we both had a go of bouncing as high as possible on the trampoline until it started to rain and I got my leg trapped in the net surrounding it. Ellie found it hilarious that I ... read more
