San Pedro de Atacama was the first stop after we said good bye to Salar de Uyuni desert. It is small charming town located in the driest desert in the world - the Atacama Desert. The average altitude of the town is 2450m, which is not as bad as in the Uyuni desert. I couldn't miss astronomical observatory. The Atacama Desert sky is one of the clearest skies on the planet which creates the heaven for astronomers. We left San Pedro de Atacama and arrived to Arequipa. In the museum I was told story about very well preserved mummy called Juanita discovered on the Ampato volcano (alt 6380m) in 1995. She was offered in ritual to the gods - Apu Ampato. "For many rituals that took place the girl had to travel to Cuzco accompanied by ... read more

There is no other way like 13 hours bus ride if you want to get to Uyuni from La Paz. It wouldn´t be even so bad if there was a pavement to Uyuni. Last 5 hours was horrible, jumpy and nobody was able to sleep. We arrived to Uyuni at 8am very tired and shocked as the temperature was about zero degrees. Uyuni is located in the middle of nowhere in 3675m above see level. The main reason tourists go there is Salar de Uyuni - the biggest salt lake in the world and one of Bolivian´s most extraordinary attraction. We booked the tour with another Australians tourists. For the comfort of having English speaking guide and more than basic accomodation we paid a little bit more than is was commonly offeres by hundrets of agencies, ... read more

One of the top tourist destination in Lake titicaca area are unique Islas Flotanes. (lake Titicca peruvian site) Then Uros people choose to live on the islands build using many layers of the totora reeds that grow in the shalows of Lake Titicaca. The reason they started their floating existance centures ago was to isolate themselves from Incas and Collas . One of the Uros Island we visited is very small. The are five small huts build from the same material as the island. The visit was quite commercial - a bit more than i would of expected. In few words guide explained us the way how the Uros people live, what they eat and how they build the island.. Luckily I had a chance to sit next to the one of the native Uros guy....They ... read more

We said good by to Amazon Jungle and arrived to Cuzco. Each year Cuzco city attract hundrets of thousantstourists. Cuzco is on altitude 3326m above see level which means everyone who arrives there from the lower altitude are out of breath. The altitude sickness side effects can be very unpleasant: strong headaches, dizzines, bleading nose even vomiting. Cuzco was once the foremost city of the Inca empire before being conquered by Spanish Conquistadors. There are many examples that Spaniards destroyed Incas temples to build catholic churches on the ruins. Incas engineers were extremly intelligent and many constructions survived earthquakes. We went to the Sacred Valley surrounded by extraordinary Andes Mountains. Pisac, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo and Chinchero are the main points to visit the Sacred Valley. We were drawn to the Pisac market by colorfull stalls packed with ... read more

From Santiago we took a flight to Puerto Maldonaldo in Amazon Basin, in Peru. We had to change our flight twice so by the time we got there we didn´t know our names... Following the Madre Dios river from Puerto Maldonado we found the best setting to enjoy the beauty of the jungle of the southern Peru. Corto Maltes Inn where we were staying creates relax and enjoyable atmosphere. We were spoiled by healthy and delightful dishes created by a French chef. The bungalows are very big, comfortable and safe in terms of all jungle species. We took few excurcions to the primary forest and the lake in the heart of the jungle where we swam. We learned fom the guide about faune and flora of the jungle and how natives are using it to live ... read more

South America » Chile » Magallanes March 31st 2008

We safely arrived in Chile (Santiago). We spend there 2 days and decided to head south to see Lake District and part of Patagonia. We signed up for similar bus tour like we had in New Zealand. This time only for a week. It was much smaler bus with about 8 amazing individuals...but about them I will write later. One of the most interesting thing we had ambitious to sign up for, was to climb Villarica Volcano (2847m). I need to add here that this is an active volcano. We haven't seen a volcano as it was very cloudy and we even started to wonder if it exists or it is just a myth. We arrived in the morning ready for big adventure, prepared mentaly (I'm not sure if physicaly) and unfortunately the trip was cancelled ... read more

The Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, South Westland are an impresive sight, and may even seems a little odd that glacial ice exist alongside rainforest. Above both glaciers stands a chain of spectacular peaks over 300m high including the highest inNew Zealand Aoraki/ Mt Cook 3754m high. The glacier front is very unstable area, the ice constantly moving and colapsing. Heavy rain may cause tunnels to collapse trapping water within the glacier. Surface water often flows down vertical shafts which lead to a labirynth of tunnels deep inside of glacier. We sign up for helihike. This includes trip on the top og glacier by helicopter where we were amazed by spectacular view from above the glacier. Than we hiked on the ice for about 2 hours. company provide us with jackets and boots with special ice ... read more

There is quite a lot to say, what I have done in the Nothern Island. Notice that there are two pages of this blog entry... Just few words about pictures.. First three pictures are taken at the top of the long Peninsula, Cape Reinga. Standing at the windswept Cape Reinga lighthouse and looking out over the endless ocean on the right hand side, and Tasman Sea on the left, has a real end of the world feel to it. Both Sea and Ocean are meet each other there, generating waves up to 10 meters in stormy weather. In Maori legend this point is where the spirits of the dead depart the earth. The next few pictures are taken during the party with our bus driver who invited us to the pub as the weather wasn't too ... read more

Oceania » Fiji » Yasawa Islands » Naviti Island February 22nd 2008

This is a Fiji time. First of all I wanted to thank you everyone who follows my trip and send me some comments. We went for a week to Fiji. I didn't plan anything there so I din't know what to expect. First day in the morning we overslept for breakfast. It was about noon when we went on the beach hoping to find someting to eat. We met this guy. No we are no cannibals neither he was, but he was the guy who sells coconuts. So he fed us with coconuts (few first pictures). We didn't wanted to stay to long on the main land so we have booked trips to two islands Yasava and Kuata. It was the best decision. Wow! We have met lovely locals, fantastic other travellers and we had a ... read more
