When I woke up this morning, I realised we were camping in a forest surrounded by pine trees. It was pitched dark when we finally found the camping ground last night. I had a very nice feeling, with the warm sunshine coming through the leaves. There is a swift-flowing river nearby where I went to wash up in the icy cold water. It was cold. So I started a fire. Zaya was already up preparing breakfast. We visited a Mongolian family near the camping ground before continuing our journey. The girl at the ger was chubby and sweet and posed for photos. Along the way at Tosonsengel, in the middle of of a hill, a meeting took place between Muno and his relatives. It was an interesting meeting in Mongolian style. A bowl filled with Vodka ... read more

Today is home-coming for Nyaama and son, Muno, and this has become one of our tour itinerary. Muno told us he used to spend his school vacation in Zavkhan. His grandfather and some relatives still live nomadic lifestyle in Zavkhan. Well, locating the family gers is not an easy affair, for they shift from place to place, without a fixed address. We need the Mongolian GPS ("Gers Positioning System") to help us. Nyaama and Muno asked around a few ger owners before we finally arrived at the family's ger. Visiting a nomadic family is an interesting affair. The nomads usually live in clusters of a few gers. As it is summer, there are many children around, and lots of goats too. We wonder around the gers, mingle with the children, take photos, and so on. The ... read more

We travelled towards Uliastai (remember we were here a few days ago) this morning. Today's highlight - to view the Otgon Tenger Mountain, located about 60km from Uliastai. Otgon Tenger Uul (Mountain) is the highest peak (3905m) in the Khangai Nuruu range. The mountain is part of the Otgon Tenger Strictly Protected Area and is sacred to the locals. Locals consider the mountain holy, and scaling the peak is therefore prohibited. The best place to view the mountain is Dayan Uul. On the way to Dayan Uul, we stopped by a nomadic family constructing their ger. Nomadic families are generally very warm and friendly who welcome fellow travellers to their gers and offer milk tea. They let us tried riding on their horse. A man also showed us his traditional boots and cigar. After spending some ... read more

I took so many pictures today. We left Khar Nuur this morning and travel towards Mukhart. Along the way, we travelled through varied scenaries that were simply breath-taking. From the blue lagoon of Khar Nuur, sand dunes, lakes, glaciers, rock formations, plateaus, grassland,... we saw them today. We stopped by at Senjit Khad - a natural stone arch situated on an elevated plain. We had much fun exploring those natural stone formations. And most memorable experience was to climb up one of those stone formations and survey the surrounding landscape far away. The feeling up there was terrific. We ended our day camping beside a river in Mukhart. Mukhart is part of the huge Mongol Els (sand dune). It's unique coned shaped looks particularly Hoover Dam in Nevada, I was told. "Sand dunes and Blue Lagoon", never in my wildest imagination fathom that such a place exists on earth. All along, I thought sand dunes only exist in desert, in places dry and barren. Not until I come to Mongolia's Khar Nuur, a beautiful fresh water lake surrounded by sand dunes. We had another "minor incident" again with the van. This time, it got stuck in the desert sand. Nyaama spent hours digging. We waited for quite some time for the four ladies to join us. We were delighted when they finally arrived. We helped them pitch their tents, and it was about 10PM when we had our dinner.... read more

We checked out of the yellow ger this morning to travel further northwest, supposedly to meet four more ladies at Uliastai who would be joining us for the rest of our journey in Zavkhan Aimag. Along the way, we past some ancient burial sites. At the sites were some standing stones known as "Deer Stones". These are cultural monuments dating from the Bronze Age (4th to 3rd centuries BC) to mark the grave or commemorate local people of high rank. The stones at the burial sites are piled in an interesting pattern, a rounded hill ending with a long tail. We had lunch at Uliastai, the aimag centre of Zavkhan Aimag. We waited anxiously for the four ladies but was disappointed to hear that the domestic flight from UB took off ahead of schedule because of ... read more

From Khovsgol Province, we travelled southwest towards Tosontsengel. It was a whole day of travel. Somehow, we quite enjoyed the travel on the bumpy Mongolian highway. I think we felt a sense of freedom not to be found back home. The song of East17 (Zaya likes this song) kept playing over and over again (there were other songs but I only remembered this one): "When the thunder's calling, from the mountain high, time to stretch your wings and fly..." I would looked out of the window to the mountains and imagined that there would be eagles coming out of the mountains. I often wondered... these were the same mountains in Jurasic times when the dinosaurs roamed freely here. Along the road, we met the owner of a new ger camp, who is also the governer of ... read more

We left Khovsgol Nuur this morning at 9am. Just out of the resort, we met a nomadic family moving house. It was an interesting sight - the nomads and their long line of belongings, cows, sheeps, etc. At around noon, we were in Moron again, the Aimag (Province) centre of the Khovsgol Aimag. We had lunch there and continued with our journey. After travelling on the road for the whole day, we were still in Khovsgol Province. The vastness of Mongolia country is unimaginable. Upon reaching Tunamal Lake, we took quite some time to search for a suitable camping ground. The original plan to camp beside the lake was not possible as it was too windy. We finally found a hill with numerous big rocks. They made perfect shelters from the howling wind. It was really ... read more

At last, we were in Khovsgol Nuur ("Nuur" means lake in Mongolian). No regrets for the whole day on the road yesterday. The scenary is simply breathtaking. The ger resort we stayed is called Toilogt Resort, sounds like "Toilet" though. *haha* The resort is run by Huvsgol Travel Company with hot showers, good food and good service. Lake Khovsgol, part of Khovsgol Nuur National Park, is the second largest lake in Mongolia, with an area of 2760 sq km. It is also the deepest lake in central asia, up to 262m deep, containing 2% of the world's fresh water. The lake is crystal clear, surrounded by mountains, thick pine and forests. We were told there are bears too. We had a relaxing day at the resort (while Nyaama and Muno spent the whole time repairing the ... read more

We woke up to a lovely morning in Bulgan House today. Across the hotel is a pasture with some horses. It was beautiful and serene. After breakfast, we were on the road again. Having lost one day on the van repair, we needed to catch up in order to reach Lake Khovsgol today. The journey was long, very very long. It was almost 8pm when we arrived at Moron, a town just before entering Khovsgol Nuur National park. We had dinner at Moron, and almost wanted to give up continuing with the journey, but we trudged on. Whenever we see a hill coming up, we told ourselves that the lake would be at the other side of the hills. Alas, hills after hills, we finally reached the park entrance at sunset. We thought we would reach ... read more
