I felt like getting out of ground Bangkok for a little bit and went up to the 59th floor of the Banyan Tree Hotel. The 61-storey property is famed for its open-air rooftop Vertigo Grill and Moon Bar. The space was converted from its original feature, a helicopter pad. The presidential suit is THB 27710 and a regular king size bed is THB 5610 ($187 US Dollars) Click here to see the link to the room http://roomsvillas.banyantree.com/bangkok/Reservations/Rooms/Banyan-Tree-Club-Room-King. Now the Bar restaurants resembles a big ship on an ocean of buildings. So I went to see it for my self. I wanted to catch the sunset but it was rather an overcast day. The city lights started to come up slowly. I could still see the river on West Bangkok. There is and strict casual dress code ... read more

Photographing the Tai Chi Performers is in my bucket things to do in Bangkok. I couldn’t find any information online about public performances anywhere. It is information passed around by the locals. I haven’t been able to adjust my schedule to wake up early in the morning because most of my favorite things to do in Bangkok happen at night and I am up at pretty late hours. I tried to make the effort to be at the park by 6 am but I kept snoozing the alarm. I kept thinking that sunrise is at 6 am and that probably all the drunken partiers from Friday night would be still up and walking the streets and I didn’t want to deal with that. A girl walking alone with a camera in the middle of drunks wasn’t ... read more

I moved on to the advanced class of fruit carving. Mint, my instructor and amazing fruit carving artist showed me two different techniques for carving flowers in a watermelon and a cantaloupe. I recorded in video some of the steps and when I have time I will upload to you tube and add them to this post.... read more

After I had some fruit I had a bit of energy to do a boat ride. There were different prices for the sight seeing boat rides. 50 THB for a regular sight seeing. It was 500 THB for 5 temples and 900THB for 9 temples. I didn’t feel like doing any temples at all. I just wanted to see the temple in the three. But I could ‘t ask anyone in English. I understood you have to go to the more expensive rides to see the temple in the tree. I wasn’t motivated enough and I decided to go for the basic sightseeing tour. I took the 50 THB one. I was surprised to find out that it stops at temples too. I stepped of the boat at the first 2 but after that I was ... read more

I had to be out of the door by 0630 if I wanted to see the monks rolling into town. People exchange offerings like food, soap and basic needs for blessings. And if you are lucky besides blessings you will also get an amulet. A few monks leave their temples to collect food for the rest of the monks that stay in the temple. They walk around barefoot with shiny bowls for people to deposit their oferings on. Once the bowl is full they have to return. I saw 3 monks, they received the offerings, give the blessings and put the food behind a wall in a big bag and do it all over. This gave me the opportunity to take a few shots but I didn’t want to be too invasive and unrespectful in such ... read more

I was starving and since I know I have nothing to loose if I eat fruit I looked for a guava stand and I asked the lady to cut three for me and a couple of small bananas. She only sells them by the kilo so I paid for a kilo but I was happy so was my belly. I skyped the love of my life and I walked him through the harbor while I was taking documentary photos, I had the screen of my phone pointing out at the water so he could be there with me. I watched the vendors set up and come in by boat from their villages. Such a different life style for me that I couldn’t resist to take a lot of photographs.... read more

I looked for a floating marked and was pleased to find something a little bit different from the floating market that I visited before: “floating kitchens”. Ladies pulled up on their boats by the steps on the sides of the brige and cook food, mainly seafood and there are little tables and little stools for customers to sit on and eat on the steps. A waitress takes the order and delivers it to the boat lady and brings the food from the boats to the people. The waitress also delivers the payment. Super interesting. I spend some time watching and trying to figure out how to photograph what was going on and capture the atmosphere properly without a wide wide angle. I forgot I had my gopro in the pocket and could have filmed the restaurant ... read more

I walked along the waterfront and started seeing guesthouses. I walked towards one and a lady boarded me. She said all busy and all expensive 1200-1500 THB that she would take me somewhere cheaper by the bus station. She took me to an old house with two rooms and the shower and toiled outside of the room shared. She said “cheap -cheap 600 THB”. Its Saturday its busy and you are not going to find anything else. The room looked clean. No AC. With a fan, it just had a bed. I didn’t want to settle for the first place and wanted to see at least another one. But she said that she would not keep the place if I go see the glowworms and come back later. So I said all right at least that ... read more

1. WONGWAIAN TRAIN STATION My new plan is to go somewhere each weekend, repeat or not, doesn’t matter but go somewhere. Pim, my instructor for the Basic Thai cooking skills class was trying to organize the group of students to do this trip but at the end of the day she was schedule for a pro class on Saturday and everyone else had something to do… so I decided to stick to the plans and do it on my own, “the local way”. The local way to amphawa is to do the train route to Maekhlong (where the railway market is, that I blogged about before) and from there take the bus to Amphawa and spend the night in town because of two reasons: Amphawa has a night time floating market and second, it has a ... read more

It was Keith last day at school and the last chance for Tim our assistant instructor of Chinese heritage to show him China Town first hand. They invited me. I had plan to go get the sensors of my camera cleaned and shop of a sturdier tripod but I knew it was a special opportunity to see China Town through local eyes so I joined. Tim walked us thru amazing markets, traditional Chinese courts, showed us the oldes houses, made us taste longevity tea made in the oldest brewers and lotus lower tea. We stopped at a place were the sell bird saliva. But the most amazing experience was at the Chinese temple were we got to see young monks praying. I didn’t really make an effort to take a photo because I wanted to respect ... read more
