Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Granada June 11th 2013

I took advantage of my hostal's free breakfast this morning around 8:30. When I was finished eating, I got my bags, checked out, and made my way to the bus station. Once I got to the bus station, I paid for my ticket and waited to get on the bus. The Alsa bus for 10:30 pulled up in my gate saying it was headed to Granada. I put my suitcase under the bus and got on board, sitting in what I thought was my seat. Luckily, no one else was sitting next to me. I enjoyed the bus ride listening to a lot of English people speak and read more of the Lord of The Rings. What I have begun to find out is that the Lord of the Rings are three wonderful, addicting books. I'm ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba June 10th 2013

We woke up early this morning so Hannah and I could get to the Mezquita while it was free. We ate breakfast around 8:15 and then headed on our way. The Mezquita is literally like 2 minutes from our hostal, so it didn’t take very long to get there. We walked through the garden area to get into the actual church area. Inside the Mezquita was very beautiful. It had the famous red and yellow curved arcs mixed with the typical golden catholic statues. The whole building was a blend of different centuries and cultures, like Roman, Muslim, and Catholic influences. It was definitely worth looking at, especially since it was free. After we enjoyed the beauty, we decided to head over to the Alcazar. It was a Moorish castle with a beautiful garden. Entry was ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba June 9th 2013

I ended up missing my free breakfast this morning due to the fact that I kept sleeping. I wasn't a very happy camper about this, so I got ready and roamed around looking for food. After I found a little store that sold some packaged pastries, I walked around for a couple hours. It was nice to just walk along the streets and see Cordoba. I started to get hungry again, so I made my way back to the main area around my hostal. I found a buffet and thought it would be delicious. It wasn't very good food, but it did fulfill my hunger. Boy am I ready for a good meal! After eating, I found a really cool place that had a lot of leather goods. Cordoba is well known for the silver and ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Córdoba June 8th 2013

I woke up early today so i could get ready for my 9:15 train. I was finally able to take the train today, which makes me really happy. I love taking trains places because they are spacious and have bathrooms. So basically they are the complete opposite of buses. When the train approached, I took my things and got on board. I found my seat, sat down, and hoped that no one would sit next to me. To my luck, no one did. I spent the 4 hour ride to Sevilla reading The Lord of the Rings, and staring at the beautiful scenary. Around 1, the train arrived to the Sevilla station. I got my stuff and headed to the ticket office. There is no direct train or bus from Merida to Cordoba, so I had ... read more

Europe » Spain » Extremadura » Mérida June 7th 2013

I woke up this morning ready to see Merida. I was really looking forward to seeing Merida because it is filled with Roman ruins. Merida used to be the capitol of the Roman region that is currently Spain. Not only does Merida have a lot of Roman sights, but a lot of it is still in great shape. I wasn’t quite sure what kind of ruins were here, but I found a map and went off on my way. The map ended being a tad off, so I followed the signs that led to the Roman theatre and amphitheater. I looked at the information for buying tickets and saw that I could get in to several things for the student ticket of 6 dollars. I started off going into the theatre and amphitheater. Since I never ... read more

I got up early this morning so I could eat free breakfast, check out, take the metro, and make it to my bus. The bus time ended up being earlier than I thought, and the metro took longer than I thought. Of course the metro doesn’t make it too easy for someone carrying a heavy suitcase, so I ended up dragging my suitcase down a lot of stairs and up. One of the times, a guy helped me carry it up the stairs. I ended up rushing because I was worried I was going to be late, but luckily made it to my bus. It took about 4-5 hours to get from Lisbon to Merida. I was really sad to leave Portugal behind, but I am happy to be back in Spain. I'm not in my ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon June 5th 2013

I woke up quite early this morning, due to everyone else in the room getting up this morning. I woke up right as my guy friend was leaving. I didn’t have a chance to talk to him before he left, or say goodbye. After I got ready, I went down stairs to eat the free breakfast. I had cereal, toast, and orange juice. After that I decided to go and see the tower of Belem today. This time, I got on the right train, but got off at a farther stop. So I walked a little until I found it. It was really pretty, and surrounded by some guards. I didn’t go inside because I honestly didn’t think it would be worth the money. I continued to walk farther down and found a really cool monument. ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon June 4th 2013

I woke up this morning with the urge to go to see the tower of Belem today. I was told that the beach Cascais was a short walk from the tower, by my roommate doctor friend. She told me to take the tram and it will drop me off there. So I did a little research and found the train station. Because a tram and a train are the same thing right? No. I bought an all-day metro pass that included the bus and the tram, so I wouldn’t have to do so much walking after yesterday's hike. So I got to the train station ready to use my pass, when it wouldn’t work. I ended up having to buy a separate pass, because even though the train looks the same and goes to the same ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Sintra June 3rd 2013

I woke up this morning sweating, with an awful headache. I chugged down some water and took a nice, cold shower. It was super refreshing and helped. I got ready for the day, trying to be really quiet because some people were still sleeping. What I have found out it that when I try to be really quiet, I end up being super loud. After I finished waking up everyone in the room, I made my way to breakfast. It was my first real breakfast while I have been traveling because it was included with my room price. I decided to go to Sintra today, which is about 30 minutes away from Lisbon. So I got my things and headed towards the direction I thought the train station was in. After asking for help, I found ... read more

Europe » Portugal » Lisbon & Tagus Valley » Lisbon June 2nd 2013

Again I woke up quite late, making it in time for the 11 o’clock bus to Lisbon. After I packed up my things, I went to check out. Of course the guy convinced me to stay there a little longer, but I told him I had to go and nicely left. I dragged my luggage to the bus station, bought my ticket, and got on board. After the 90 minute ride, I took the metro to the destination the hostel told me. Again, I proceeded to walk around, trying to follow the directions and find my hostel. It took about thirty minutes this time, and a couple of hills, but I was able to find my hostel. I went to check in, but I was a little early. I ended up leaving my stuff there and ... read more
