Tuesday May 15, 2012 Nanaimo to Von Donop Inlet When we got up at 5:00 AM it was still windy and "Jenny B" was already gone. Being hardened sailors we took off anyway and once out in the Straits we knew it would be a long bumpy trip to Campbell River. We could see "Jenny B" several miles ahead and John called and suggested we could quarter the waves across the Straits of Georgia to Malsipina Strait and hug the mainland side where it might be better. (They were headed to see friends on Hornby Island or they would have come too.) Good idea. So we turned to go south of Lasqueti Island and Texada Island and pitched through four-foot waves, 20-knot winds and tacked to find the most comfortable line until we did come up ... read more

By the dawn's early light we brought up a muddy anchor and headed into Townsend Bay. Picture this. In a rolling boat I am feverishly trying to post a blog while I still have internet connections and BJ is at the wheel trying to avoid a large barge seemingly intent on a collision course. A little while later with the Olympic Mountains towering off to our left we seem to have the Straits of Juan de Fuca all to ourselves. Through the San Juan Islands and into the Gulf Islands where we cleared customs in Bedwell Harbor, and on up in Trincomali Channel we overtook the "Jenny B" and I called him on the radio and invited ourselves over for a yarn when we both arrived in Nanaimo where we both eventually anchored by about 8:00 ... read more

A peaceful morning in Portage Bay developed into a throng of kayaks, speedboats, sailboats, and Ride the Duck boats making our exit out of Lake Union an adventure of avoidance. It's a beautiful day in Seattle and everyone is doing something outside. As luck would have it we found a green light into the small locks and wedged ourselves between small saiboats and speedboats. We wedged the bow alongside an old wooden cruiser with an older couple expertly handling the lines. Of course BJ made friends with the lady in the ten minutes it took us to drop to the sea and found out that they were bound for their 45th trip to Alaska. Yes, I heard it too - 45 trips! In that little time she learned that he was a dentist who practiced under ... read more

We've been planning this voyage for a long time. A trip has been in our cruising dreams since we started boating the San Juans and began slowly working our way up the Inside Passage. Last year we ventured up to Shearwater, BC, which by my reckoning is halfway to Glacier Bay. Sunday (5/13) we will leave our berth in Lake Union and began a 3-month cruise with family and friends joining us at various ports to share our journey. I hope to use these entries as a way to share with friends and family some of our experiences as well as keep you informed as to our whereabouts. Previous attempts to blog have been frustrated by the scarcity and slowness of internet connections in remote areas and even this year there will be many days of ... read more
