Now I'm officially traveling solo for about a month. Today was all about transportation: the Tube, a train, a plane, and a bus. I've safely arrived at my hotel on the Isle of Man, the Rosslyn Guest House. I had to walk the last mile or so from the bus stop to the hotel, and it's a bit colder here than my last stop. So I'm going to rest and look forward to adventures tomorrow. I met with Eno for lunch before I left - it was regrettably short, since she had a meeting at 2. I will certainly miss her company and the comfortable place to return at the end of the day. I'm happy that we will be meeting up again in 2 months. I'm including 1 picture that I took on my plane ... read more

I've had a busy 2 days, and I still think the most awesome thing that's happened was watching Billy Elliot at the Victoria Palace in London with Eno! Where shall I begin? Let's start with the good from Monday. St. Albans is a quaint suburb of London, 30 minutes by train to the north. There are Roman ruins - my first of this trip, but certainly not my last - and they were worth the 2.5 pounds to visit. The Abbey was massive there - St. Albans is a cathedral town, so the abbey dominates both the history and the skyline of the area. They give a free tour a couple times a day, and it was so good - an old fellow showed me and a retired couple around the cathedral for an hour. It ... read more

I've been to London so many times, it's always a treat to try and find something I haven't seen or done. Since it's always changing, it isn't too difficult to accomplish. Today was a day for staying close to home. I took the opportunity to pay close visits to the 2 tallest new additions to the cityscape: the Gherkin (aka 30 St Mary Axe) and the Shard, the tallest building in the EU. Frankly, I just wanted to see them up close, and when I did, I moved on. I got to cross over London Bridge twice, and I got to see things in the distance that I had already seen up close - Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, St. Paul's, the Thames. I finally got around to seeing Platform 9 3/4 at King's Cross ... read more

What a fun day! I'm still a little jetlagged, but I probably got 8-9 hours of sleep last night anyhow. Getting up at 6:30AM GMT was no easy task for me, though knowing where we were going certainly made it easier. Trains are such a wonderful deal throughout most of Europe, and England is no different - provided that you order online and early enough. This was my first trip to Cambridge, and I recommend visiting it, if you get a chance. The trip up to Cambridge took an hour from London. It turns out that the train station at Cambridge is actually nowhere near the university. It was over a mile to walk there, so we were grateful for the exercise and ate accordingly more food than we would have otherwise. We found this wonderful ... read more

So, I flew into London-Gatwick this morning. What a nightmare. We did arrive early, and my first experience with Norwegian Airlines was fantastic - it's got to be the best night's sleep coming to Europe that I've ever had. But everything between getting off the plane and meeting up with Eno was a disaster. I always figure that the worst part of any trip to Europe is the first few hours - jetlag, getting the phone to connect, crowds... This experience, though, takes the cake. I guess if I hadn't had high expectations for being able to use my American phone in Europe this time, things wouldn't have been so troublesome. But I've been on the ground now for 6 hours, and my phone still hasn't connected. I'm glad they had wifi at Gatwick, so I ... read more

The first picture is the welcome sign at LaGuardia Airport. The other picture is from the plane, and I think it’s somewhere over the Virginia coast. Now I’m sitting in the JFK lounge. It was a bit of a pain getting to the airport TOO early this time. The gate didn’t open until 6:30, so I had to wait an hour before I could check in. Everything else has been spectacular. My flight from ATL to LGA went off without a hitch. I was able to read 3 chapters of my next (and final) book for my TCU course. The ride was smooth overall, and it lasted shorter than I expected. All good things. Once I got to LGA, the way to the baggage claim was clearly marked and close to my arrival gate. I had ... read more

Things have gone well so far, now that I'm officially on this trip. I'm currently sitting at my gate at the ATL airport, with an hour and half until my flight leaves. They have free wifi here, so I thought I would take advantage of that. My 3 days in Tifton were uneventful. I got a couple of school assignments taken care of, so that's less I'll need to do abroad. I managed to check out a couple of new places to visit while in England, so that excites me. And I found a better deal on hotels in Ireland, so I jumped on that, too. On the family side, I got to chill a good bit. Ran errands with dad around town on Tuesday and then trivia with the bro and friends that night. Went ... read more

I'm on the final leg of my pre-European adventure. I've driven back down to southern Georgia so I can leave my car at my parents' house while I'm gone. They're also the ones taking me to the ATL airport and picking me up in Orlando when I return. In 72 hours, I'll be at JFK, waiting for my plane to Europe! Yesterday was pretty much the best final day in Athens I could've spent there. I taught my Sunday School class in the morning and then went to watch my UGA Men's Tennis team beat LSU 4-2. The weather was perfect, and they were signing autographs after the match. Then I went back to church and hung out with some of my favorite young people for a couple of hours. We got to play kickball, again ... read more

I'm almost on the home stretch - 1 week until I'm boarding a plane in ATL!!! I couldn't help but take note of the plane that skidded all over the runway at LaGuardia Airport this morning. Guess where my first flight on this big adventure lands - LGA! Maybe the snow and ice will be gone by then... One of my last non-packing preparations for this trip was a a visit to the dentist this morning. No cavities! Now my teeth are all shiny and clean, and I can drink and eat whatever I feel like. They asked me if I drank coffee, because the only issues were some stains from dark liquids on the backs of my front teeth. Alas, I don't drink coffee, but I am addicted to sweet tea. And at that moment, ... read more

I'll first start off by saying that I have awesome friends. Erica, who lives in Germany, has completely taken care of all the arrangements - lodging, travel, and tours - that we're going to need while I'm there at the end of April. I mean, she was a woman on a mission, and I'm still getting suggestions from her for things to do and see while we're in Dresden. Also, the place we're staying in Dresden has a Trabi for a bed ; once she found that out, and I expressed a desire to stay in the room with the Trabi, she made it happen. Weird things always happen to us when we're together, and the Trabi is only the beginning. I bought traveler's insurance this morning. That's the first time I've ever bought any, but ... read more
